I once got hammered on the 4th of July and somehow threw my car keys into the river. Ever since then, I have a locking carabiner with my keys on it that never leaves my belt loop when I'm intoxicated.

If you use a magnetic lock box, be sure and put it under your car after you park. Driving over that rough terrain could make it fall off, magnet or not.

Absolutely, not until after you've parked!! The magnet's not THAT strong.

I watched my friend smash in his girlfriends window if it adds any incentive to make extra keys to the conversation. He said fuck the locksmith that's money for corn

Yeah, definitely make extra keys, just don't leave them in your car like a group in my campsite did. Kind of defeats the purpose.
But yeah, if you have a locking carabiner, which I think everyone at Bonnaroo should have as long as you have beltloops, and a spare key somewhere very safely hidden in yr campsite, you should be good.
I cant take a spare key because mine will cost $100+ dollars as well for a 2008 Jetta. I just have one key and am just going to put the actual key ring around my belt loop that way the only way it goes away is if my pants disappear. I am kind of OCD about having my "normal" things that I carry on a daily basis on me at all times as well.

back when i had my old car i always used keyless entry and just left the keys in the glovebox (for other festivals/concerts/etc). i have a new car now, however, w/o it so i am going to give the magnetic box a try.
for those of you who say they don't stay on, i wonder what kind you have? my gf has one underneath her truck that she keeps there permanently... and it never falls off.

Just zip tie it to the frame like on on the tie rods behind he wheel or something you should be able to find something to pop/and or cut the zip tie or use a lighter (head monkey of the tribe always remember that lest ye become a knuckle dragger throwback) to melt it off or wear a sharpened pair of golf shoes like Hunter S. Thompson.

I usually rent a car to make the trip. Last year the guy at Avis made sure that i knew that a replacement key was around $400 and to make sure I took care of it. The first day we were there, I saw a locksmith working on a similar car and since the car door was open I can only assume that he was making a duplicate key and it wasn't just a matter of getting the door open. All I could think of was how much that had to cost. No more cheap keys I guess, everything now has chips that are coded to match the ignition switch. It's probably bad enough to lose the key at home, it must be a disaster to lose it at Bonnaroo.
You can get a duplicate key made at home depot without the "chip" for a couple bucks. It will unlock the doors but not start the car. I plan to lock my real key in the car, and then my buddy and I will each have a key to get in if we need to. if we lose one, not such a big deal.
