I was told by a friend that at the What Stage, after a band has finished their set, security clears out pit area to allow new people in to the pit. Is this true?? I was at Roo in 05 and 06, and don't remember this. I seriously hope this is not true. Shouldn't the early bird get the worm???
I don't think they started doing this until a few years ago. It does suck. I remember standing at the What Stage all day in 2005 to get 3rd row for DMB.

Actually this is a great idea. It allows people to get a great view of their favorite bands without sacrificing the rest of their day to do so. Also encourges safety as sometimes camping out at the front all day can take a serious physical toll on a fan. It also keeps people from being crushed by huge crowds and large surges when acts take the stage. I actually can't think of one negative aspect of doing this.

I still sacrificed my whole day sunday last year. But for the most part, I agree, it's a decent idea.
The best thing about it is other than a few of the biggest sets every year you can walk right in to the pit when the show starts without having to wait in line.

So, I didn't go in the pit at all last year, so I don't know exactly how it works. If I wanted to pit for Arcade Fire, would I have to get in line during MMJ's set? Or could I get in line right after their set and get into the pit? Also, would I be able to see the stage at all while standing in line? In other words, if I did get in line for the AF pit during MMJ's set, would I still be able to see MMJ's set?

Some lines for the headliners start earlier in the day, just depending on if someone wants to start a line.
As far as the MMJ>AF situation goes, I'm thinking it may be possible to get in the pit for both, but I wouldn't bank on it. I don't think you will have to watch the whole MMJ show from the line to get in for AF, but it wouldn't hurt to get in line toward the latter parts of the set. I'm going pit for MMJ and if I can get in for AF I will, but if not I'll settle in somewhere on the edge of the outside of the pit if possible.

Yeah, you can still camp out all day, just not in the pit, taking space from people who actually want to see the band currently playing. When I jumped into the pit last year for John Fogerty, there was already a huge line of people waiting for DMB. This way works best for everyone. And I would think that jumping in line right after MMJ ended, or right towards the end of MMJ's set would be good enough to get you into the pit, but you might also want to play it safe. Standing there throughout all of MMJ's set would guarantee it.
And yeah, view isn't the best, but you can look up at the big screen and hear everything quite well. Kinda depends where you are in the line.
How about the Which stage? I'm HUGE fans of OCMS, Alison Krauss and Mumford & Sons and they're playing back to back- does this clear-the-front rule only apply to What stage or is it Which stage as well?

No, you can sit up front all weekend there. The only thing to consider is that there is no shade up there which makes it highly uncomfortable in the afternoon. Waiting up front for the Avetts last year let me learn about how much I could sweat in an hour.
So many people were waiting all day to get into Metallica in '08 that they opened the pit for them before Chris Rock and let them stay through Metallica.

Yes, the fenced off area is the pit. Hard to say for sure, but I would assume that line of people is for the next show. Although, early in the day they isn't usually much of a line for the shows, but its hard to tell what time of the day this picture was actually taken, so it could be the start of a line for a headliner.
In 2009, I got into the pit for everything I wanted: Beasties, Wilco, Bruce, and Badu. No problem. I recommend getting in line 30-45 minutes before a band's set. I also recommend going around to the left side of the field to the left pit. This is the one I've always gotten in. I've never attempted the right pit. There are always less people on the left side of the field, since the two entrances to the What stage area are on the right side, so I imagine there are also less people trying to get into the pit on the left side.
You should be able to do pit for MMJ and then get in line for Arcade Fire and be okay

I know it's crazy for bands like AF and Eminem, but what about the not-so-huge headliners? I've wanted to see The Decemberists for years and would LOVE to be in the pit. I'm catching Bela Fleck's full set, but then if I head over to the What Stage during Grace Potter's set and get in line for the pit, I should be cool? Do I have time to see a bit of Matt & Kim before heading to the What Stage or should I play it safe and just go straight from Bela to the What Stage?
