After the Dead's set got pushed back, and back, and back, etc...we went over to check out Primus. It seemed like hours before they actually came on. All I remember is two huge eyeballs on the screens, and once they FINALLY came out on stage the eyeballs look down and it was on

My second Bonnaroo. I'll never forget the deafening crack of thunder that came down after Buckethead finished the ridiculous solo during the Material set. One of the greatest moments in the festival's history.
My friend's tent blew over (she and her bf had an old tent with metal tubes) and they had to use one of those emergency tin foil blankets because their regular blankets were soaked! Sucked, but had an amazing time!
My canopy got blown into my truck, cracking the windshield. Had to leave early because my truck's clutch was acting up and I was scared of the mud. But Primus' amazing set made up for everything.

That was a great year, despite the storms. Amazing sets from Wilco, Yo La, eary tent Black Keys, & MMJ, of course summoning up the Storm for the encore at Which. Primus late-nite was mesmerizing. The Hill Country Review set was unprecidented, bringing out RL Burnside. Galactic should have been rained out but finally back came out and played a scorcher for the die-hard fans who stood & waited 1-2 hrs for it.
Overall, a life altering experience in many different ways. Like many, didn't see as much as I had hoped for. IMHO, the best MMJ set I've ever seen and one of the greatest concert experiences of my life. The Dead show was something to behold and really set in motion my progress as a head. Gillian Welch stole my heart. Wilco were excellent. Calexico were memorable. Primus stole something from my head. Kings of Leon were still fresh. Trey and his fireworks. Muddy late nights, generator hum in my head for days after the fest ended, and yadda, yadda, yadda...wild.

Saturday Night Late Nite still stands as the biggest clusterquack in Roo history. Ween, Robert Randolph, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra and a much delayed The Dead on the What Stage and Primus waiting for the flooding to subside to take the stage. I recall ducking out of the Ween madness to see if Primus had started, realizing they were delayed and returning to the Ween fray, only to emerge hours later to hear Primus playing YYZ. A few songs later Adrian Belew came out and we lost our minds. Then an exhausted sun-up slog through the mud to camp.
2004 was the 1st year for camping-only, and it was right up against the What stage wall where VIP is now. It was a killer spot. We watched every What-Stage act we wanted to see (David Byrne stands out in my mind) from camp, and it sounded great (and you could see the screens). Was sorely disappointed to return in 05 to find VIP had snagged the best spot.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
So my group and I were walking into Centeroo and everyone was squeezed to either side of the arch. The middle was completely open. I see this in my partially inebriated state and think, what the hell, let’s just go through here.
After a couple of steps I realize that I am about knee deep in water/mud and that there are woodchips floating on top that makes it appear to be solid ground (sort of). Next I realize that everyone around me is cheering (for me obviously) and my group are all 4 standing back there laughing too. So what do I do, get out, move to the side, wait for the next poor unsuspecting sap to come along, and then cheer right along with the crowd when he goes knee deep!

That was such a fun year. It was the first year I went so it was magical. I don't think any memory will beat sitting and listening to Winwood right before the Dead came on. It was raining, but then it REALLY started raining. They delayed the show, but we stuck around. There was this massive rain storm for like a couple hours. Then it stops. The dead come out and the clouds part. It was truly awesome.....
What was not so awesome.... was walking back to camp after that. It was majorly flooded everywhere and the porta potties were running over. No so fun. But I got to say they have improved the situation in that area since then.

There really should be more people talking about Bill Laswell's two shows that year. I really don't think Bonnaroo has done anything as extraordinary since, and that includes Dr. John this year.
It was probably the best lineup for my musical tastes. The only thing I missed because of the rain was The Dead. The girl I was with lost her sandal in the mud pit between What and Which, and I had to carry her back to camp. I remember Galactic being delayed, but that just meant they got to play at dusk. They were awesome, and so was Robert Randolph, NMA w/RL Burnside, and SCI. Probably 3 of my top ten shows of all-time. So I'll put up with a monsoon for a weekend for that. Truthfully, I'd rather have the rain than the 100 degree heat from last year. It caused me to watch Fogerty and JBT from the mist tents
*edit: Saw the OP lineup was missing The X-ecutioners. They were Friday late night, but I forget which tent. Just remember it was a party and everyone was rollin'. Very underrated hip-hop show

Ahh yes... 2004!! Twas my very first Bonnaroo!! I can barely remember it now... Primus in the mud!!!!!! Can't wait to see them at the farm again this year!!!!! BONNAROOoOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Watching Primus in ankle deep water was something I'll never forget... Les chanting "Bonaaaaroooooooo" at the start still echoes through my mind.
Ahhh 2004 Roo.. my first Roo and what I remember most was walking in "mud" up to my shins in front of the portos after Winwood crying, "i cannot believe I drove 16 hours to walk in human feces!"... ahh, such memories!
I loved 2004 - I'd gone to roo the year before, but was under prepared to the point where it was difficult to enjoy, so 2004 was the first year I felt like we did things right.
To this day, 6 roos later, that Friday late night is my favorite night at the farm. I remember seeing Gillian Welch playing a tent as the sun went down, and the tent had to be maybe halfway full, most people were just sitting down, happy as all hell. Then the late night shows came and things got wild.
Definitely the best Umphrey's show I've ever seen - I think this was the year that they switched out with moe., and then moe. played Enter Sandman while they were dressed as Metallica?
And as awesome as Umphrey's was, the Praxis set that year could be considered the best late night ever. I did a lot of running back and forth that night, and it was killing me not being at Vida Blue since I'm such a big phish fan, but that's how incredible the other two shows were.
Saturday night, Robert Randolph and Primus were both incredible, but spirits had definitely been dampened by the weather. We got out of there before Trey, and I remember it taking hours to get out as well.
Last year was the muddiest I've seen the farm, and I've been going since 2006. There were people getting their cars stuck constantly like clockwork right by my campsite. Doesn't sound nearly as bad as 2004 though, I would love to see some pics!
So wet that the driest place to hang was a m isting tent; but the Dead started it off with Tennessee Jed, and everyone forgot about their weather delay.
Like many of you 2004 was my first year and I've been addicted since. I was with a group full of rookies as well and we didn't even consider that we'd need shade at our campsite. (fail). The lineup was much more "jammy" than recent roos but i was very much into that at the time.
I remember epic sets by:
Trey (fireworks ooh ahh) MMJ (rainstorm blew in right as their set started to peak) Wilco David Byrne
Also, my buddy completely wigged out after drinking what he described as wine in a gatorade bottle offered to him by a pirate at the Dead show He was really not the same for at least a week after and had some scary episodes. We were staying in Nashvile for the summer and his parents flew in and jumped out of van as we were waiting outside of a theater where a Phish show was being simulcast live. They threw him in and delivered him to some treatment center somewehre. Crazy stuff.
I've heard since then from people who worked the fest that year that there was some mysterious roo juice that was going around causing people to flip out. Anyone else remember anything like that?
2004 was my first Roo. Completely overwhelmed. Learned the lesson that just because you can't sleep past 6 in the morning that does not mean that you have to start drinking. The Cinema tent was just like all the others -- dirt floor, no walls. The year of the long-lost Yet Another Tent. (It's been wiped off of Bonnaroo's schedule on the website.) I hit on a lesbian there, too drunk to notice.
It was a great time but I enjoy it more now that I tend to stay sober and be more prepared.

No, but thats one helluva story! How is he now? And does he drink Gatorade?
2004 was my first year, and I had a blast. The weather was miserable, but I will never forget the Robert Randolph late night with the river running down the middle of the tent. I have been hooked ever since.

'04 was my and my bro's first roo. My response to "how ya doin?" was "I'm a little wet right now." We were camped out in bfe and had a 30+ minute walk to centeroo, so there was no going back to camp to grab a quick bite. Friday night was dry and perfect for Dave and Friends, but it being my first year, I got separated from my brother and got lost for over 2 hours trying to get back to my camp. Then the rains came. My most epic memory was waiting for The Dead to come on, under a soaked blanket with a small duckie umbrella and no ponchos. Seemed like we waited forever but then the rain stopped, the clouds parted and The Dead open with Tennessee Jed. Long story short, I would rather have hot and dry than anything like 2004 ever again! I sure hope they're better prepared for such weather in any case.
