I wish I wasn't late to the thread. I've gone two years without a canopy, and have had no issues. For one, your neighbors will all have canopies, and every thread has already talked about how friendly of an environment 'Roo is, so you'll probably be offered the option to sit under your neighbors' canopies. Second, I usually take off pretty early in the day for Centeroo, so I've never really sat around for longer than an hour in the morning. If you're doing the same, you should be fine. Finally, most tents have really good ways to unzip down to a mesh and get the same shade/breeze sitting in your tent as you would under a canopy.

A couple girls who camped next to us last year didn't bring a canopy either - they ended up tying a tarp to hang between their car and tiny tent. The "canopy" hung about 2 feet off the ground, and they had to lie down underneath it on a towel to get any relief. And while I'm sure this was better than no shade at all, it didn't look like much fun either.
tl;dr: Get a canopy. You'll thank all of us later.
Bring some sort of shade plan. At waka last year, I had the only canopy within at least a 3 campsite radius. Of course I shared, but between me, my tent, and all of my unprepared neighbors, it got pretty cramped.
Your neighbors might have one you can get under, but if they don't, what will you do?

I'm not bringing one canopy this year... I'm bringing seven (to be shared by about 15 people, plus those that show up around us). Makes mornings and breaks from Centeroo SOOOOOOOOOO much more comfortable.
No shade at Bonnaroo is just a bad idea. My first year we just had two tarps between our two cars. And that was pretty miserable. We had a slightly better shade structure built in 2008, but it didn't compare to the luxury of a canopy/EZ Up that I've had the past two years.
You definitely need a canopy! Or tarps, as suggested. But, considering the small number of trees on the farm, a canopy would be better. Cheap canopies can be found easiest at WalMart.

we showed up in 03 without a canopy... the only thing that saved us was the 9 gallons of water we froze ahead of time. i wasnt new to camping just new to camping in tn. its a mistake ill never make again!

It was my first year and I ended up hanging with my neighbors under their canopy on all the mornings. I was in the very back of Pod 1, so it was a short walk to a spot where some trees on the neighboring farm provided some shade in the morning and a bunch of people would hang out there as well.
ALL ROO VIRGINS, BRING A FUCKIN SOURCE OF SHADE! Seriously I didn't think we'de need it either and we spent a lot of time in the rental car with the AC. But it doesn't matter what I say, I read 10000 times to bring an EZ up and didn't, so you know what? Don't bring one, then you can be like the rest of the rookies who after an hour wish they had one.

I went so far as to get 2. My first Roo, thanks to these board, I bought one. After that experience, I bought a second one before Roo this year. One to hang out under, the other to go right over the top of the tent.
Shade to hang out under is a necessity. Additional shade for your tent is that much better. Re-purpose some old dark-colored sheets to hang on the sides with inexpensive clips. They block light but let air through. If you want to go one more step get a silver-colored tarp to hang on the east side opening to squeeze precious hours of sleep out of your mornings.
Both years, my EZ-up style canopies have been on sale in May for about $60 each. Well worth it.

I LOVE my EZ up, and I can't imagine having survived Roo without it. Also, it seemed so much more solid than the offbrand canopies around me. I also could've slept comfortably in my tent, beneath it, til 10am...cool, shady and breezy.

Our EZ up is rather rickety and blew over on Friday, and we didn't set it back up for Saturday and it was MISERABLE!!!!!!! Thank god we found the duct tape and had it fixed by Sunday otherwise I probably would have just gone home lol!
If you are a diabetic and rely on random "friends" to give you insulin then you'll probably get by at Bonnaroo without shade. Otherwise unless you have an RV with A/C or easy access to one....you are taking a major risk not having some kind of shade plan.
went without one my first year, took one the second year, have expanded a bit each year since. Have had about 400 sq ft of tent/shade footprint the past two (we skipped 2010). Here are quick video tours of '09 (VIP)
