How? Jay-Z being an awesome show has nothing to do with how "diverse" it was, it has to do with the fact that Jay-Z is an awesome performer.
Just because Drake is "diverse" doesn't mean he'll be a good performance.
But it also doesn't mean he'll be a bad performance. I was inferring that it would be a good performance since I have friends that have seen his show and said it blew away their expectations.
I know this board hates poppy groups (see KoL) so I don't expect anyone to want Drake, but you can at least admit that he's a big draw and is one of the best rappers in the game right now. Again...you don't have to see every headliner. I have little to no desire to see Phish but I welcome them as being headliners...they definitely have the talent and draw and they deserve it.
Roo has pretty much snagged every other big name hip-hop artist...he's really the only one left and this is his year.

Exactly. Jay-Z was awesome and a great performer. Eminem was meh and mediocre, and was slightly disappointing when you compare him to other first name headliners we had/could have had. Wayne was absolutely horrible. Kanye could have been good, if he didn't show up late. Main rap acts don't have a good track record at Bonnaroo, sorry.
Reviewing the tired and trite, "this band will attract this crowd" angle, Phish brings the jam fans/better party favors, RHCP brings the mainstream rock/bro fan, and Radiohead brings the hipster/music purist fans. It's a win all around! I'm sad to see a lot of the undercard bands at Primavera, but I think Roo has a few aces in the hole.
Been reading the boards off and on for a while, figured may as well make an account now that the lineup announcement is gettin' near. Radiohead is definitely what I'm most excited for. As far as the setlist goes do you think it will be more like the last time they played Roo (I hope so) or their most recent US shows in New York (heavy King of Limbs). King of limbs is the only album of theirs I honestly dislike so it'd be a bummer if it was heavy on that, but I have a feeling it will be. Thoughts? (and apologies if you like KOL it's just not my cup of tea)
Everyone said Lil Wayne would headline the main stage last year. Same was speculated for NIN right before they were announced. I don't see Drake getting a Which Stage spot unless it's pre-headliner.

Yeah, in all honesty they did a great job of appealing to the 3 types of people at Bonnaroo. The hippies, the bros, and the hipsters, of which Phish/Radiohead/RHCP are arguably the biggest band in each category.

I thought Jay Z was good.... not great. Nice light show, nice band, it's not a show I'll remember for the rest of my life. IMHO Public Enemy was better the year before in a tent. I'm not the biggest Radiohead fan, only saw them once back around 97. That being said, I expect the atmosphere AND the show this year to blow my mind, much like Arcade Fire last year.

I feel like my quandary with radiohead and RHCP are similar. They could be great shows, they could be meh (mostly dependent on setlist). RHCP is another one where I like most of their work. The only album I could say I actually dislike as a whole is their new one, I was honestly a little thrown off when Iheard. But everything elese is good to great. I think Stadium Arcadium was underrated just because the single (dani california) was kind of a BS tom petty ripoff song, the rest of the album was pretty damn good though.
But it also doesn't mean he'll be a bad performance. I was inferring that it would be a good performance since I have friends that have seen his show and said it blew away their expectations.

*cracks knuckles*
I would say Hip-Hop artists have the highest % of big name acts who are just awful on stage. And this is coming from one of the biggest hip-hop heads you'll likely ever meet. Drake doesn't use a band (at least the live clips I just watched didn't have one), so it's essentially a DJ booth, Drake, and maybe a hype man. That puts him at a tremendous disadvantage in terms of the possible quality his performance could have. He's limited from the get-go, is what I'm trying to say.
and is one of the best rappers in the game right now
You can't be serious. You CANNOT be serious. Here is a sample of some of the linguistically gifted Drake's lyrics:
"alright, bottles on me long as someone drink it never drop the ball, quack y'all thinking making sure the young money ship is never sinking bout to set it off in this biznatch Jada Pinkett I shouldn't have drove, tell me how I'm getting home you too fine to be laying down in bed alone I can teach you how to speak my language Rosetta stone I swear this life is like the sweetest thing I've ever known got to go thriller Mike Jackson on these n'ggas all I need is a quacking red jackets with some zippers super good smidoke a package of the swishas I did it over night, it couldn't happen any quicker y'all know them, but quack it me either but point the biggest skeptic out I'll make them a believer it wouldn't be the first time I've done it throwing hundreds when I should be throwing ones biznatch I run it ahh"
Now, I happen to listen and enjoy the lyrical stylings of a Mr. Elzhi. Take a listen:
Tell me again that Drake is "one of the best rappers in the game" when some guy you likely never heard of runs verbal circles around him on an album he produced in his basement? Drake has million dollar studios and producers, ghost writers at his disposal, and let's out that trash.
And I know I don't have to see other headliners, I'll likely skip RHCP. But Drake isn't a headliner, he's not one of the best rappers in the game, and he sleeps in a hyperbaric chamber full of cocoa-butter.
Edit: I found videos where he does use a band, but he still sucks.

That i thought Jay Z was "just good"??? I've seen better, much better.
In my mind the only thing Jay could have done to make that show better was dive into Reasonable Doubt. That's it. Live band, energy that increased as the show went on, could tell he wanted to give a good performance. I dunno, I thought it was great.

I agree Omar.... I'm not saying it was a bad show, I enjoyed it, but my point is that it is NOT a show i will remember forever. I'm not the biggest Hip Hop guy around, but I can appreciate it. I thought the PE show in 09 was better. PE is much more my generation, so that might be the reason. None the less, when I recount MY favorite Hip Hop shows, the Jay Z show from 2010 isn't top 3.

PE in '09 was awesome but their shows don't have the same grandeur as Jay's show... I wasn't at Jay so I can't say for sure but the general consensus was that that show was epic as hell

Jay Z owned the What Stage. Flat-out owned it, and I'm not even a big fan of his work, although I do give him the props that he deserves. I hope Drake doesn't show up. In my opinion, his best work was his guest shot in Cudi's Pursuit of Happiness video...

I saw Drake at Voodoo.... it was one of the worst shows I have ever seen. Also the show would rival Lil Wayne's for amount of white girls reciting rap lyrics...
ahh damn i missed the insider excitement last night. jay z was very good in 2010, i just get bored by his songs, watched like an hour than went to late night stuff. PE held my attention much more, but that's cause it was fucking PE, never thought i'd get the chance to see them, grew up listening to them, but roo made that happen. i always wished they'd put wu tang in the same spot one year
I have to agree with Juggs on this one. I had a chance to see The Stones back when we had SARSstock in Toronto. Granted, the idea was cool, but they just couldnt bring what they once brought to a crowd of 100,000 people.
....and Flava Flav has ruined whatever reputation PE still had...what a JOKE!
PE held my attention much more, but that's cause it was quacking PE, never thought i'd get the chance to see them, grew up listening to them, but roo made that happen.
I guess I just never understand this viewpoint. Would I love to have seen Public Enemy in their prime, circa 1989? Absolutely. The 2009 version of them, with Flavor Flav doing his best on VH1 to set race relations back about 40 years? No thanks. I'll take one of the best rappers ever, still in his performing prime.
It's the way people are all "I'd love for the Rolling Stones to headline, I've never gotten a chance to see them!" No thanks. I'll stick with their classic albums and remember them as a legendary band in their peak, rather than a bunch of 70 year olds geriatric-ing it up on stage.
not the same as the rolling stones cause chuck d is still a great performer. i was just never a jay z fan... he's got 4 or 5 songs i like that i'll throw on my iPod, but public enemy has entire albums that are solid all the way through. plus growing up listening to them, that 09 set holds a special place in my heart. i mean i got 10 feet from the stage at public enemy. at jay z i didn't feel the need to experience it that way, i just chilled back, thought the lights were cool, his band was pretty good, then i went to dan deacon (which was wayyyy more fun)

The problem with Juggs point is that you have to look at each artist individually. I don't know that I would go out of my way to see the Stones now, but I would check them out. Friends that saw the last Stones tour thought it was great. Would I rather jump in a time machine and see Bruce in '78??? Yeah, but I still bought tickets for the April show in Cleveland. Does he bring it like he did 30yrs ago? No, but he can still bring it.
Pearl Jam, 1990, a small club called Peabody's, one of the best show's I've ever seen. Pearl Jam 2011?? Eddie isn't climbing the lights or stage diving any more, but they still bring it.
People are clamoring for the Beach Boys... I'll check them out, but I tend to feel they'll exemplify Jugg's point. I hope that's not true.
We left Plant last year for much that same reason... and enjoyed EITS.

I'll agree with you to an extent on the Stones. While I still think seeing a band for nostalgic purposes is not the worst thing someone could do (I'll be seeing the fuck out of the Beach Boys if they're at roo), I don't think PE fits into this category. Flav has kind of always been a glorified hype man, and he did his job just fine at Roo. As far as Chuck D, I don't know if you were at the show and just disagree with me, but I thought he killed it at that show. That show was fucking awesome.
flava flav has always been an ass, he always will. it's not like now he is up there doing anything different than he was before. except for that drum solo. but that shit was hilarious.

Yeah, I think PE would be better off retiring Flav at this point. The problem with those insipid reality shows is they end up defining the people on them. I've only seen glimpses of Flavor of Love, but it was enough to make me shake my head - and Flav wasn't the most erudite guy to begin with. I listen to 911 is a Joke now and think about him on that stupid show and his failed fast food venture.
When I saw PE at Hopscotch in 10' they were awesome. Flav is fucking hilarious too. Maybe they didn't hold onto the image that they had in the 90's, but it doesn't mean that they aren't still great live.

I think the beach boys can avoid the point juggs made about the stones because they've never been that "high energy" live band. The beach boys (especially with Brian Wilson) were just about creating good music, they were never showy, i mean Brian Wilson had crippling stage fright for years. They've actually been touring without Brian Wilson for some time and selling out medium sized ampitheatres (14,000 people?) I think adding Brian would give them more of a premium, but honestly if we get them I think it will be in a similar spot to Buffalo Springfield and I think it will be a decent show with some beautiful music made. Honestly though, I don't thin they'll be at Roo, that's just my 2 cents though.
