"What actually matters" is completely subjective. Some people could care less, and that's their right. Last time I checked, this is a board about an Arts and Music Festival (which TV shows fall under, as art). Politics, nowhere near either.
It is absolutely anyone's right to not care about politics (however, I find anyone who doesn't care highly ignorant because whether they care or not it is going to effect them).
Your right politics doesn't fall under arts or music. Neither do our college majors, where we worked during college, ect. I consider this thread just the general discussion thread. If I'm wrong on that I would love to be told differently by a moderator.

I also worked as an RA in college, at TJ Maxx and at a resturant.
Working at restaurants suck. I was a server for four years, and when I finally left, it was one of the happiest I've ever felt.
Out of all of the jobs I worked in college, the restaurant one was by far the best. I think it was because it was locally-owned so we weren't micromanaged. And it was cafeteria-style, so no serving at tables or worrying about tips.
The best job I've ever had was my high school job working at a movie theater. Fantastic boss, fantastic perks, and great co-workers that I am still friends with to this day (12 years later).

To paraphrase Eddie Vedder in '08 "When Obama took office in 2009 gas was $1.68 a gallon... it's $3.50 a gallon now".... not sure if he's working for the Big Oil Companies, or if its just the expected results of someone that turned a free Harvard Law Degree into running a homeless shelter...
After 40+ years, I've come to the conclusion that the great leaders are few and far between. and we somehow survive, and for the most part thrive in-spite of them, no matter what letter is next to their name.
He said that about Bush, not Obama.
Regardless of which president he said it about, it's still off-base. It doesn't matter if EV is a great musician, it doesn't mean he's great at everything. And clearly understanding fluctuations in gas prices isn't one of them. As if the president controls the price of gas or any other commodity.
Completely untrue. Look the 2012 election is about reducing the defecit and getting the economy on track. Their are two ways to go about doing that.
Republicans: They want to balance the budget by cutting spending and reforming entitlements (modifying social security, medicare, education, ect).
Democrats: They want to balance the budget by cutting spending and raising taxes on millionaires and billionaires.
That's a stark contrast in my opinion. Do you want to take away money from our public schools, basically replace medicare with a voucher system, and more or less end social security as we know it; or do you want to just take more money from millionaires and billionaires who will be fine whether we tax them more or not.
Perhaps my statement was a bit too general. Of course there are Republicans and Democrats that are light years apart in their policy preferences and beliefs. However, when Obama extended the Bush tax cuts in 2010, that was when I lost the little faith I had in the Democrats. Not everything Obama has done has been bad but I expected much, much more from him, that's all.
I do believe that Republican and Democratic presidents are not so different. If Democrats like Bernie Sanders and Dennis Kucinich could become President, my faith in the party would perhaps be restored. Neither one of these men have any chance whatsoever of even sniffing the presidency, though, so I really have no hope at all.
There are a few things I disagree with him on; extending those tax cuts and the health care mandate in particular. But I understand why he extended the tax cuts given the state of the economy. However, his decision to not put them up for renewal again until 2013 was even shittier. He might not be president in 2013 and if the Republicans win (they really could) then they could become permanent or extended again. No idea why he did that and it was a lousy shitty move. If he extends them again I am going to be livid.

He's an absolute nut bag..... there is a laundry list (from seeing UFO's with Shirley McClain, to the fact that he has completely ignored his district and NE Ohio for the last 12 yrs.). He's not a bad guy, and on some level I think he genuinely cares, but he's completely ineffective and our region has suffered in part because of him.
MKC.... I know!! That was the point. Did you read the end of my comment???

Fair enough. I admit I do not know much about his views/actions on local politics. He has been trying to move into the national spotlight and in doing so I guess has caused his constituents to suffer, which is inexcusable. That being said, I still think he would make a great president.

No Juggs.... My point was this.... The line between D/R is completely blurred with the exception of a few hot button issues. Gas was $1.68 in OH on Jan 20, 2009. It Obama's fault as much as it is Bush's fault. Most of our leaders our ineffective, and their hands are tied on top of that.
I did take a crack at his use of his education, and that was probably uncalled for, but he did campaign against big oil....and it hasn't changed.

There is no fucking way you are going to tell me gas was $1.68 in 2009. Maybe an old run down gas station from the late 90s still had their sign up but that's about it.

The people I met while being a server was the best perk of the job. I met a ton of fantastic people, and lets be honest, if you wan't a job where you goof off for about 80% of your time spent at work, it's great.
Working for a privately owned establishment would make it one hundred times better. I worked for a national chain, and dealing day in and day out with people who cone in and complain about the stupidest things, just because they know it will get them something for free, got to me after four years. Plus, having my weekends off, plus vacation time, and health benefits, is pretty nice.
I'm still stuck on mike's point about Obama's use of his education.
You do realize he was a community organizer then went to law school, right? If you don't, I suggest you read up on the guy you're needlessly bashing.
Obama was a community organizer, then began his journey that led to such miniscule achievements like "first black person chosen as editor of the Harvard Law Review" or "first black president".

Gas was at the low-levels because of the economic collapse, the Dow dropping from 14000 to 6500 in a matter of months.. Gas prices didn't rise because of Obama campaigning against big oil, they increased because the economy "improved", or at least the stock market values improved and people perceived this as an improvement of the economy as a whole.
this is random but does anyone remember that guy from last year that kept telling us the headliners were going to be AC/DC and the Black Eyed Peas? not sure why i thought about that today, but it made me chuckle quite a bit
