silly, please remember to be considered of your neighbors when setting up camp. tents + 14x14 + tarps and tapestry will be a little overkill in the space you are provided.

Well the tent is only a 1 person and will be under the canopy as will part of the car, so the only thing really taking up space will be the canopy. We've considered the space and we will be considerate.
Me and my 2 friends are bringing a tent but only for storing our coolers/cots/etc when not in use, we have a 14x14 canopy and a serious amount of tarps and rope and a tapestry and we'll sleep under that. We've done some test runs and it shades great but I am curious about how it will stand up in the rain.
What kind of canopy is it? EZ-ups with some good stakes ( i prefer the heavy duty ones from walmart over the ones that came with mine ) and maybe a guyline will withstand quite alot. But, a buddy of mine used one of those Ozark Trail canopies from walmart and it barley stayed up when the sun was shining.
Whatever you plan on doing is fine. You'll pretty much have enough pace to work with.
But also whe you're packing your set up take an inventory of everything you have for camp. Then cut that by half.
I'm going to tell you this from experience. By the time you get there and un load the car there is a good chance its going to be day time and warm. Also you'll be excited and maybe a little tipsy. I know I've packed things that I usually use at smaller festivals when I have the time and space to use them. But at Bonnaroo the ONLY thing that I plan for in excess is water. Everything else I bring is the absolute minimum. I bring one tent, one EZ up, one fold out table, one grill, one cooler. One of everything except for cases of water.
So think about the least you can bring when it comes to comfort gear. You won't need it or use it. Actually you might use it, but by the time the week is over you're just going to have to pack everything up. On Monday morning, in the heat, and the only thing you have to look forward to is going home and to work.

This^^ Last year was the first year for me and one of the guys I'm going with this year and we were fairly over prepared, thanks to my obsession with inforoo, with a huge tent as well as a canopy and 4 coolers and we still had plenty of space around us. It also helped that the 4 guys next to us only bought a 2 person tent and no shade. Life lessons: shade makes friends and a well tarped canopy can be all the tent you need.
bonnananaroo: It's an Eddie Bauer domed canopy, last year the cheap EZ-Up knockoff I got on craigslist literally buckled on Sunday and we left it in a pile by the trashcans so I decided not to skimp this year.
whoever mentioned staying in centeroo. in 2010 i was up till sunrise both friday and saturday night and the only reason i went back to the tent was because i had contacts. ( any info of ways to handle contacts?) I think i would've been much better resting under a tree than taking an extra 30 minutes to walk back to camp. Never slept in the tent though, didn't have a canopy, just slept outside. tents are good in case it rains though obviously. still debating on how to setup this year
I've never had a tent a Roo in 8 times going. And the tents I do have cost less than $30 at Big Lots or dollar stores. If the weather forecast is any indication, it will be nice for sleeping outside under the canopy. A cot/hammock is great but just a couple sleeping bags/blankets for padding with a tarp underneath just in case it's wet/rainy will work also.
has anyone else done this? i'm thinking of going without a tent this year. my only concern is bugs. my friend said he had some problems with chiggers one year from kneeling on the ground while setting up his tent or something. my plan was to lay a tarp down and had a sleeping pad on top of that, but i also don't want to itch all day/night. i'm just hoping to get a little more sleep this year, and i figure being out of a tent is the best way to do it.
