To echo Chris, here - and not that it's an issue or anything, but keep it respectful and avoid speculation, please. Many non-regulars will likely end up reading this.
This is just god awful. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

Wow. I can't believe this has happened. It does go to show that it's not just inexperienced people who are at risk. If I remember right, he said he'd been to the last 6 or 7. RIP Yoder.
RIP Yoderoo peace and love to his friends and family.
Personally, I think one of Matt's Trees should be planted in his honor also.
Agreed completely.
I also like the idea Holls has to donate to la sagrada familia in his honor. I was in the process of sending a message to the creator of that facebook event, but I just can't find the correct words and expressions.
Didn't attend 'Roo this year, but much love and condolences to Yoderoo's family and friends. There is an undeniable trend here, and it is people die from the heat at Bonnaroo, even those who presumably are prepared and experienced with it. The killer is the heat index which is a combination of temperature and humidity. Although the National Weather Service posts regional heat indexes, apparently in a tent camp, and particularly in a tent, or in a big crowd of people in a tent, the microclimate heat index can reach dangerous levels. Hard research should be done on heat indexes in the specific environments common at 'Roo, and make adjustments if they are proven to be dangerous to health.
wow i was just reading his last 100 posts and this guy has been to roo 6 times, is super prepared (most of those last 100 posts are him answering questions newbies have about the festival). how does this happen to someone so prepared? just goes to show you, it can happen to anyone. it's rough out there. i know a lot of you laugh that off and say it's nothing. but it's serious business. we're probably not ever going back. but please everyone take care of yourselves. this is 2 years in a row this has happened to one us. i didn't know either of these guys, but i still feel for them. i can't even imagine if it happened to someone i know.
R.I.P yoderoo. Didn't know the guy but everyone I met this year at Camp Inforoo/brunch was very friendly and generous. Hope we can plan something to honor him similar to the meeting at Matt's Tree.

I agree that there definitely should have been more porta potties and places to get water, but it wasnt THAT bad. This was my first roo and I spent hours and hours researching and preparing for it, as anyone should who is planning to go to something like bonnaroo. My offbrand camelbak and my misting fan both broke before i got to use them but i was still fine all weekend despite the fact that i overly indulged myself in drugs every day of the festival. Staying hydrated and taking breaks is essential, i noticed a lot of people that would stay in the tents for way too long without water just so they could have a good spot.
Statistically, as the board grows, we're bound to have tragedies like this, especially in sever weather situations. But it doesn't make the loss any less heartbreaking.
I would like to add that this is our opportunity to help each other -- lift each other up and watch out for one another -- not just directing ire to a system trying to support 80k+ people. I certainly want to see some changes to help prevent heat related issues, but it would be truly tragic if we didn't use this opportunity to see how we can make sure we stick closer together. No amount of new shade would be more effective than us being vigilant in taking care of one another.
I just want to say how much I appreciate and love everyone on this board - there is such an incredible community and many of you have moved from mere acquaintances to close personal friends. Whether at Roo or any festival, let's honor our losses with perseverance to look out for one another.
This is too much. I love live music and Bonnaroo is the ultimate music festival but goddamnit a good soul shouldn't die for it. Too sad. Yoderoo was a great poster on inforoo and I'm sure an better person.
Oh my God, I just saw this... this is so incredibly tragic. Rest in peace Chris. My thoughts are with his family and his close friends. It's truly heartbreaking and sobering to think that our little community has now lost two regulars at Bonnaroo in just over a year.
I like the idea of a memorial - maybe not necessarily another tree, but definitely something. And I whole-heartedly agree that there need to be more water stations in Centeroo to help prevent tragedies like this from happening again. Didn't there use to be a couple big metal sheds in Centeroo with rows of water faucets? Whatever happened to those?
I can't believe this. It makes me thankful to be home safe. When I got there thursday and I realized the power of the sun, I was scared and surprised. I researched on this forum for months before. Bought things i could to help (camelbak, canopy (ezup), silver tarps, all the tips) and followed the advice. On thursday I could tell that the advice did not prepare me. It wasn't the heat as much as it was the sun. In Ohio we had up 90 degree days leading up, but being out there and having the sun beat down on you all day was completely different. By the time I got back to camp thursday, I was beat up. Chaffed to shit, exhausted and I could barely move. I was in pain from the tole the heat put on my and the chafing. I improved every day and by sunday I realized I couldn't stand and see shows back to back to back. I'm glad I was not on any serious drugs, because it was hard enough to keep myself hydrated and energized without. Reading this news saddens me deeply. I think for someone who loved this festival to die there is perhaps some of the saddest things i've heard in awhile. One of the taxi drivers told me this sunday and I just had a hard time putting it in perspective and I still do.
Here are things I noticed that they improved this year...
1) Shaded portopotties 2) The Ford Focus theater was handing out bandannas filled with ice. The line was short and they gave you a big handful. 3) More water stations. I also think they took the filters out when they started running slow and the lines got long. Less tasty water in favor of more people getting water quickly. 4) I actually saw them handing out bottles of water to the crowd for at least one show. They just tossed them out to anyone who asked for them and it was not a small amount of water. 5) As long as we hid the spouts, we were able to get in with our camelbaks full. We some some people straight up refuse to empty their Camelbaks. We had one security guard ask us to empty them and we pointed out the line to refill it and he said, "Fine, but you won't get lucky the next time." Just had to be a little bit of a summers breeze even when he was being reasonable. I do think security overall was laxer about the water issue when it was important. We would have refused had we been asked. 6) Lots of messages about taking care of yourself on the screens at the main stage. 7) More shade. Do they need more? Yes. But it's a start.
I just wanted to point out that Bonnaroo is not oblivious to the dangers of the heat and that they have made improvements to keep people safe.
I am very saddened that we lost another Inforooster. RIP Yoderoo.
Someone with more medical experience correct me, but my understanding about heat related illnesses is that it can be hard to tell you are having a problem until it's REALLY bad, and then it gets worse really quickly.
I often think its not so much HOW prepared you are. You may not know of an existing medical condition until its too late. The heat may just set this condition off.

There are RNs on this board that are much better suited to answer this than I am, but I will answer with what I know.
This is 100% true with Dehydration, by the time you start having the more noticable effects, its already bad, and unless you stop what you are doing, get some place to sit down and take it easy and rehydrate, it gets to where you require an IV pretty quick.
As far as heat related sickness and death at Bonnaroo, I think it sneaks up on most people while they are sleeping.
I don't know the specifics of Yoderoo's death other than hyperthermia. Dehydration can be insidious. We all know that but it is easy to lose track when you are in the moment, especially if doing a lot of drinking or party favors.
Certain party favors that have a reputation for getting one "pumped up" do so by raising the whole metabolic rate...this translates into increase in body temperature. Obviously many people survive the combo fine, but it does increase risk. Combined with ambient heat and dehydration, it could potentially be lethal.
There is also the possibility of electrolyte imbalance with dehydration that can throw someone almost immediately into a lethal cardiac rhythm. Some people unfortunately are just more predisposed to that...think about the athletes you hear of that drop dead in the middle of practice, etc.
Am I proposing that everyone stop partying? no. Am I proposing that we cherish every moment of our lives and the lives of those around us, and that we exercise as much good common sense as possible? yes.
I don't know if this helps or hurts, but as a nurse I saw some terrible deaths, terrible accidents. Passing away at an event that you love, doing what you love....its not easy on those left behind, but it does bring peace knowing he died doing what he loved to do.
RIP Yoderoo peace and love to his friends and family.

When I can think straight - Holls -please count us in.
