MJ is playing a 700 cap venue next month here in Knoxville. I checked Ticketmaster, and it looks like it is maybe 60% sold right now. Both projects are definitely on an uptick, but 8k by mid 2025 is a big jump. Chappell just made that kind of jump, but I feel that she's an exception rather than a norm.
I'm not talking Chappell Roan or Noah Kahan big, I'm talking "Who the fuck are all of these acts I've never heard of selling out AEG and LiveNation's 3-5K venues in Boston?" big.
3k is more on the reasonable end even though I am still not totally sold on it. I think my eyes went to the 8k number originally and was like come on, man. I get what you are talking about with acts you've never heard of selling out big venues. One of the nice parts of living here is those are invariably garbage country acts, so I don't feel like I am missing out if I look them up.

I'm not even saying that they're going to sell out a 7 or 8K venue, but there's a level of popularity where you're too big for clubs and seated theaters, but not big enough for large suburban sheds and arenas. A lot depends upon the venues available in a market, but if someone can draw 4K in a market, you might put them in a venue with capacity for 5-8K in order to sell those extra thousand tickets, sell more alcohol, etc.
Ultimately, MJ Lenderman may have broader appeal than many suspect for the same reason that Hozier has broader appeal than many originally suspected...he reminds old dudes of the music they they listened to when they were young. Hozier brought together Van Morrison's Irish soul mystic vibe, Daryl Hall & John Oates' pop R&B thing, Laurel Canyon folk, and the jaundiced lyrical take on love and desire that was the hallmark of Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, and Graham Parker.
Similarly, Lenderman is the closest thing to Neil Young we've seen since Neil Young, and he sounds like a perfect distillation of the last 40 years of No Depression/alt-country/Americana, with some Sonic Youth-y guitar skronk thrown in for added measure. He's never going to be as big as Hozier, but he's going to be big enough to get out of small clubs and theaters very soon.
Neither MJ nor Wednesday can sell 5k tickets in any market outside LA/NY
By next summer? It's likely. Neither he nor Wednesday are likely to ever be arena headliners, but the volume of press he's been getting this week from the mainstream media is incredible and a large ballroom/small amphitheater tour including both bands would be perfect for those sized venues by next summer. He's already sold out a lot of 1K-2K venues on the fall tour. Why are 3K-5K venues so unlikely by next summer, especially if the new Wednesday album is out by then?
you aren’t helping your case by misrepresenting how big he is right now, he’s playing 1k+ venues in NYC, LA, and Boston and that’s it lol. Also thinking that MJ and Wednesday touring together would magically double their audience is hilarious

^^^ in all seriousness i have no idea how big Lenderman will get but this is a good take.
Only thing I'll add regarding Hozier is he didn't just appeal to old dudes, he's also a big hit with the kids. I really thought he would kind of drift away after "Take Me To Church" but to his credit he persisted with steady touring and ten years later has another huge hit with "Too Sweet". He's not for me really but I respect his work ethic and talent.

True, both Hozier and Lenderman have young audiences, but each also brings older fans in like the side of fries and large drink that wind up supersizing your audience.
The biggest challenge for any artist who has a sound that's rooted in something from the 70's, 80's, or 90's is figuring out how to get your music in front of older people who only listen to the same three or four artists they got into in a major way back then. There are a couple of uptempo songs on Rosali's Bite Down which will grab anyone who loves Rumours and Tusk by the collar and immediately make them a fan. With Lenderman, Rosali, and Good Looks, getting the music in front of people who'd like it if they heard it, but aren't engaged with seeking out new music, is the challenge. (I'm now a fan of all of them and have seen all of them live in the last 18 months because I've learned that my tastes have enough overlap with the tastes of music writer Steven Hyden that whenever he raves about someone I've never heard of, I check them out. But that's a level of effort that not everyone is going to make, but people will Shazam that end credits song.)

Urgh, not next week! I will be one really tired pup if I try to hit that Jersey City show.
I said it earlier, but you gotta do whatever you can to go. It's such a good show and is worth any inconvenience.
TBH anytime in September is kinda bad as there's so many shows already - I have three already next week including St. Vincent the following night. Just signed up for a code though. Ergh.

I don't understand how Creed came back. Even in my peak buttrock days at 15 I hated them (and I saw Staind and Crazy Town!). Annoying songs and douche of a lead singer. How did they get uncancelled?
Speaking of my peak buttrock days I saw Linkin Park twice during their Hybrid Theory tours (in <1000 capacity venues) so I doubt that can be topped
