That's complete nonsense. The vast majority of the thousands of songs he has made fit this mold. Then again, I should trust your word on the matter. I'm sure you've read his book and listened to the majority of his catalog.
that's pretty obviously just a distribution deal, c'mon. just directs to iTunes. He's not making music excusively for Amalgram Digitial, like he would if he was signed to, say, XL or something.
Listening to "Rain in England" right now, I love the ambient tracks w/ freestyles over them. I also really dug his freestyle over MiMosa's "Silver Lining".

Sure, you can listen to a wordsmith like Nas or GZA and be amazed by the virtuosic nature of their rhymes, but 16 bar gems aren't and have never been the driving force behind rap music. It's about originality. Being "fresh". And having fun. Remember the days of De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest? The Beastie Boys and Run-DMC? Hip hop is supposed to be FUN.
I'm rambling. What I'm trying to say is...in the realm of hip hop as we know it(assuming you know good hip hop) lil b is garbage. His flow isn't as intricate or complex as other new rappers like kendrick lamar, but personally I enjoy the music just the same. He has a message of good will and is unnervingly humble. So unless you're an asshole, that makes him pretty like able.
And while his rhymes have been lacking in the past, he's getting better. But that's not even lil b's appeal. It's his swag, unorthodox style, and the fact that he's a walking contradiction to the taste of hip hop purists.
Look, you either get it or you don't. It's not cool to be a music snob anymore. That's what acts like Odd Future and Lil B personify. Underlying talent delivered in a way that that you have been predisposed to dislike.

Yeah, do YOU remember the days of De La Soul, ATCQ, etc.? Those guys didn't make it big simply because they were cool, or had style, they made it (above all else) because they were good at what they did. I mean, have you ever actually listened to Q-tip and Phife before? It's not just that they rhyme, it's the rhythm to their words. You can cut a beat off of an ATCQ song, and those words will keep your head bobbing. I defy you to take the beat out of a Lil' B song and tell me it's anything more than some dude rambling on about nothing in particular, with no structure or anything. I get that you think this is cool, but what's special about it?
I cannot begin to understand why this guy has the cult following that he does, or why people think he can do no wrong as some kind of spiritual barometer for good will. He's a rapper. Your run-of-the-mill, poppin' bottles, "beefin' with other rappers" rapper. Oh! He named an album "I'm gay!" even though he isn't! He's a pioneer!
Yeah, I'm sure the LGBT community is jumping over themselves to thank Lil' B for the tireless work he's done to further the LGBT agenda of equal treatment/rights, etc. Oh, wait, he did it because he was going for shock value and figured idiot white kids in the suburbs will buy anything if it makes their parents uneasy or pissed.

Je.Sus.Christ. I actually wish Christ was two syllables so I could break it up for more emphasis. Saying Lil' B's rhymes are "lacking" is like saying Lieutenant Dan's legs were "lacking" after the Vietnam War. HE DOESN'T RHYME, so yes, in that sense he's "unorthodox." He just....says things. And it's not even the fact that he doesn't rhyme, because there are plenty of rappers who don't rhyme every bar, but he has no rhythm to his flow. It's choppy, herky-jerky nonsense. The whole "emcee" thing sprung about, essentially, from urban poetry. People who could take words from a page, and give them life just by speaking them. Hip-hop isn't about SICK Beatz!!! and style, and it never has been. Sh*tty hip-pop? Sure, it's about tricked out beats and the whole party mentality, but not hip-hop. And swag? Do you wanna f*ck him? Who cares how much "swag" a rapper has? If this is even in your top 20 reasons for enjoying an act you need to sit back and reevaluate things.
And what do you mean a "walking contradiction to the taste of hip-hop purists?" Hip-hop "purists" (a group I'll happily name myself a member of) don't dislike Lil' B because he's a "contradiction," they dislike him because he's a crappy indie hip-pop act with minimal skill who developed quick cult status by giving an album a "controversial" name and saying some weird sh*t once in a while.
And you didn't do a very good job of measuring me up as a hip-hop fan, I'm afraid. I am a pretty big fan of OF, the A$AP gang and acts like that. A$AP Rocky has skill. He's raw, but with some polishing he will be able to put out better material lyrically and his production value will increase. But see the difference there? He isn't relying on production to get by, his emphasis is on the lyrics. Tyler, The Creator (who I think is getting to be a bit overrated), Earl Sweathshirt, and the OF Gang? I'd put any of them one-on-one against Lil 'B. Even Taco.
And, in conclusion, real hip-hop fans don't say sh*t like this:
You're a hip-pop fan, and I'm not one to tell you not to be, but please, for the love of all that is good and pure in this world (babies, puppies, the Easter Bunny, butterflies, Halle Barry's rack, Susan Tedeschi's pipes, Sabrett's hot dogs, my Mom's home-cooked meatballs [SECRET FAMILY RECIPE SON!] and so on...), don't try to tell other people that Lil' B is a good rapper/emcee. Someone might actually hear you and some young, impressionable mind might pick up a Lil' B mixtape instead of Section 80 or 4eva N A Day.
Laughed out loud at this. It's Lil B. I'm pretty sure there isn't a single person here who doesn't "get it".
I've been avoiding this discussion but the De La Soul comparison got to me. Lil B really isn't that good, and comparing him to Tribe or De La Soul is an insult. Those people were new and fresh yeah, but they had amazing talent. That's why we are still talking about them today. In 10 years we wont be talking about Lil B. Hell, we probably wont even be talking about him by this time next year.

Two things:
1. I come from the school of Illmatic, Low End Theory, Enter The Wu-Tang, and ATLiens. Get off your high horse, if there is good hip hop out there then I have probably already listened to it and liked it.
2. Do you not remember how goofy De La and ATCQ(especially in their early days) were? The comparison was being made because like those two acts, lil b is having FUN with his music. When I wrote it, I honestly thought it would be easily comprehensible. Sorry.
Flanzo, I would respond more in depth but it seems like this conversation has gotten pretty emotional for you, and honestly...even though there's a lot of text in that post, you really didn't say anything at all.
Again, it sounds like you're taking the art too seriously....
And, again, STOPPPPPPPPPPPP comparing Lil' B to ATCQ or De La Soul, or ANY accomplished act from that era. It's asinine and just flat-out wrong. Two incredibly influential and storied hip-hop acts vs. a guy who hasn't done anything. It's insane that you feel it's valid.
Also, as a bit of advice, you shouldn't think I truly care about this conversation. I think of you martians like I do any other group of young people gravitating to whatever the latest "cool" thing is. You just happen to pick a talentless bozo to worship instead of fashionistas, actors, or whatever else your generation takes its cues from.
I'm sure the f'ing Wiggles have fun with their music, does that mean I should accept it as something I want to sit and listen to? Your criteria for what makes good music, or what makes music listenable, is all over the map and pretty confusing.
