So which of those do Oregon and Washington fit into?
California, along with Nevada, Utah, and part of Colorado (the other part of CO is in the mid-west)
Funny, I would have assumed that under this method of categorization, Nevada would be considered mid-west. What are your criteria here? Is it purely locational or is there a mentality element?
The Midwest is IN, IL, IA, WI, MI, MN, KS, ND, SD, NE. I don't think MO, OH, KY, and OK are. For reference I have lived in IL, MO, IN, and PA.
When you live in Arizona there are 4 regions out side of the state. New England, the Mid-West, the South, and California. Everything fits in one (or more) of those four.
there are two regions, the south and the heathen lands.

It kind of depends. In the case of Nevada it has to do with the fact that Nevada doesn't exist outside of Las Vegas.

That's where I was getting tripped up. After living in Carson City, I'm inclined to agree with your assessment. I'm still not entirely convinced that time was moving forward during the years that I spent there. I think maybe I just caught up after we moved away.

I have so much stuff to do this week but my finals aren't even till the 3rd week in May. Grr, wish we got out earlier. ah well. sometimes you just gotta grin and bear it!
What university do you go to that doesn't let out until the end of May? I don't know if I could handle another month of class, holy shit
University of Massachusetts at Boston. I dunno, on the plus side our winter break is a bit longer... but I'd rather cut it a week and get out earlier, honestly. It kills me that most of the schools around here are done.
New England claims nothing south/west of around New Haven
Well, technically it does - but they're Yankees fans, so quack 'em.
There's just way too many states. Australia is the same size and we have eight states, and one of them is a tiny DC-like territory. I mean, c'mon... two Dakotas? I get that fifty is a nice round number and you've already got the flags made up and what-not - but really, there's no need. Pennsylvania, New England and Upstate New York, that's one state. Ohio to Wisconsin, that's another. Make NYC / Long Island / North Jersey / SW Conn. into one city-state. Annex Southern California into the Southwest desert states, and Northern California joins up into Washingtoregonia. Everything in the middle can be divided up into no more than three states.
I remember about a week or two after I'd moved back to the US, I had to take a state geography quiz in school. I wouldn't inflict that torture on my worst enemy. How was I to know Minnesota wasn't called Milwaukee?
holls posted this on FB. Thought it would be interesting here since this conversation has come up a few times and chicojuarz has had repeat time after time that Chicago is the midwest.
Hits very close to home this time....I can only send hugs and good vibes at this time to my work family. People are seriously goin crazy right now. The world is depressing ugh
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

I always thought it was asinine that OH is considered the Midwest.
Geographically, it's pretty asinine. We laughed at the notion in KS of OH being the mid west. But, apparently, people laugh at the notion of KS being a part of the mid west as well. Touche.
I didn't read this article, but it seems "Mid west" is more a matter of culture than geography to most people.

Yes, I am speaking geographically. It just doesn't make sense, we are neither mid nor west. And I have heard us called "the heart of the Midwest." Just silliness. And KS is totally Midwest, unless they want to just be "mid" or "middle Anerica." That I could get on board with. They are very centrally located.
luva is it because we have cornfields? I disapprove of your broad generalization of this awful state in which I reside. I'm a Cali girl at heart, I just happen to live in Ohio I still lerve your face tho!

No fucking way I'm living in the same state as people in upstate NY. Also, everyone in New England knows only part of Connecticut is actually in New England. Western Connecticut people like the Jets for Yeezus sake...
All this map talk fascinates me. Here's a rough approximation of what I think each of the various regions are, based on my travels through about 30 of the states. Sorry if I just called you a Northerner or lumped you in with your rival sports team.
Royal blue - Northeast / New England Neon green - NYC metro Crimson - mid-Atlantic Hot pink - Pennsyltucky Light pink - Northern South Blood orange - South Cyan - Florida Yellow - Midwest Purple - Plains Gray-ish blue - Northern Plains Faded orange - Rockies Light blue - Southwest Sea green - Northwest Light brown - California
And Alaska and Hawaii each kinda do their own thing.

I'm feeling some strong deja vu regarding this convo... hasn't it been discussed before? Either way, KY is definitely a Southern state, with just a little midwest spice.
Does anyone know how to listen to Spotify without an account? I don't want to pay for premium, but I can't use my account any longer since I've changed countries. Or, if anyone knows where I can listen to the AnCo 2013 Bonnaroo songs please let me know. I need to hear them again, and Spotify seems to be the only way.
The debate over various American regions is one of the most fascinating and frustrating things I've ever been part of. It's one of the main reasons I am glad to be from Atlanta because I know exactly where I am from and few would dispute it.
It's all especially crazy considering how vastly different a state can be even within it's own borders. Consider California, New York or, you know, Texas.

AHEM! What exactly is wrong with upstate NY? Actually, first I'll need your definition of "upstate NY".
