Yeah, see, if that person says they don't like other forms of music, and only like jam bands, then they don't like music. They like jam bands.
Not liking metal doesn't mean you don't like music. Not liking anything except metal would suggest you don't like music. You like music, but dislike metal.
It's not that I care that people only like carrots, it's that people who hate lettuce, squash, broccoli, cauliflower, and asparagus seem to think they love vegetables.
Hmmm I don't know man. I get what your saying but it's messing with my brain. Jam bands still play music. There are a lot of artists that fall under that umbrella. Just because they only like that genre doesn't mean they don't love music. That genre IS music to them and probably all that they know or want to know about the art form.
Then again I am that guy who can't listen to a lot of music at once.
I think this is the best statement of the bunch that the genre IS music to them. It's hard for me to understand as well that not everyone looks forward to new music releases and concert dates as much as I do. But those people can't understand why I don't have a favorite Nascar driver or football player etc.
That sounds incredibly pedantic. Obviously by "everything" they mean they listen to a lot of different bands and genres.
Absolutely. Most of the time that obscure band I know they won't know is My Morning Jacket.
It's so weird when I tell people how much of a fanatic I am of theirs and the people I'm talking to have NEVER heard of the band. I've got posters, vinyl albums (duplicates in some cases), CDs, DVDs, shirts, and have traveled a bit just for them. To me they're one of the best going but I always get confused looks when I bring up the name.
Lately I've had some family at least recognize the name because a bunch of them had seen the Showtime documentary about New Basement Tapes.

I had never heard of My Morning Jacket until I joined Inforoo.
Seconded.
I'd heard the name, but had no idea what kind of music they played and had never listened to a song. It's pretty weird how a band can be so big and so small at the same time.
When I'm at my office and people ask me "Who's playing Bonnaroo this year?" I generally respond with "What kind of music do you listen to?" because no one has ever heard of the bands I'm generally most excited to see. And I'm not a big music snob.

This question varies with who ask it in my experience.
So, you weren't serious, which leads me to my next question - what's your point?
To help you understand that someone doesn't need to love all genres of music to love music. Someone doesn't even need to love a handful of genres to love music. (Not liking other genres, be it by willful ignorance or not, is irrelevant).

So you obviously didn't agree with me... and you listed genre's that didn't exist back then...
I'd be willing to bet Mozart was well versed in the different styles of music available at the time.

It was American Dad for me.
Never heard any one else say anything about them until I got here and I was surprised with how many people loved them. I really need to re watch that episode.
Seeing the movie Elizabethtown at the theaters in 2005 for me.
I saw this movie in theaters. Didn't realize there was a MMJ song in it. I have also only seen it the one time and I have a feeling that I wasn't paying attention to the soundtrack.

Still haven't seen this episode. I've been told about it numerous times, and know the entire background to it. But I've never seen it.

The soundtrack is really great, besides having a Ryan Adams song on it.
