released this day in 1998. my first and possibly still favorite phish album.
You know I've never, ever put together that Story of the Ghost, Siket Disc, and Farmhouse were all released in a two year span. That's quite a lot of variance in their sound in a short time span.
I agree though. Story of the Ghost is probably my favorite of theirs.

even if as an album it doesn't have a lot of their "best" songs, or for that matter songs they frequently play live, i think it's their most fully realized album. it feels like a "real" album, not a jamband record with a bunch of jam vehicles and showmanship.
based on the above, my other phish hot take is that Sigma Oasis is their second best album.

I would agree with all of your points, including Sigma Oasis. I almost brought that up but figured we'd focus on Ghost. But yea Ghost feels like they wanted those album tracks to stand on their own and work together as one whole idea.
Like Lawn Boy, which I also love but for different reasons, has a bunch of tracks that I wouldn't listen to on their own. It works as giving you a cross section of what Phish sounds like but I wouldn't be stoked if, say, My Sweet One came up on shuffle. And it's hard to know when to put it on because it goes from bluegrass to jazz to prog odyssey and back and forth within like 40 minutes.
With Ghost at least they're all kind of moody, whispery Phish tunes that are all good on their own. And they basically ignore the mandate to try to replicate a live experience anywhere in there which was a smart choice. Including and especially jimmaddgo's favorite ROW GAY.
