Ned, can you clear this up? Do you disagree with the Beatles comparisons or not understand why people see it that way?
No, I do understand how people can see the Beatles in Tame Impala. Kevin Parker's vocal style coupled with the classic psychedelic sound make for an easy comparison. It's ridiculous to dismiss his music as without merit because of this though. On the surface, it may appear a knockoff of things done 40 years ago. However, there is a depth to the sound of Lonerism that should completely shatter that notion. Every time I listen I pick up nuances, details and layers in various songs that I hadn't heard previously. This isn't some jackass rehashing Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds for 12 tracks. It is a well though out, well constructed aesthetic that stands out on its own, regardless of influences.

I don't think you are going to find many people who disagree with what you just said. You may not of realized my comment the other day was a snarky joke pointing out the absurdity of those who "dismiss music as without merit" for being derivitive of the past while using sarcasm because I thought the general sentiment on this board that it's a great album. I thought it would be even more obvious coming me, who has frequently praised it. I gave it #1 on my top 50 list. (bonnaroo.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=cds&action=display&thread=27117&page=13) And BTW, I don't think they would get near as many Beatles comparisons if it wasn't for the Lennon-y sound of Kevin Parker's voice.
