Actually, I'd like to revise my answer. Start with Abattoir/Lyre, then work through the other three I listed. A/L is very accessible, and it covers a lot of stylistic ground.
If I've only had limited Nick Cave listens, which album should I start with?
Pick one:
Lyre Of Orpheus/Abatoir Blues, The Boatman Calls, or Let Love In... those have long, long been my favorite 3. Honestly, Nick Cave/Bad Seeds have many, many records that anyone could make a case for... I don't think that an album has come out that was less than very good (***1/2 level, at least)... seriously some of my favorite music ever. (Interesting note, Nick Cave was on the first actual CD that I ever bought when I was 9 or 10, so he's a pretty personal artist to me to start with)
Personally, though, I think his best work was with Birthday Party, and you can't go remotely wrong with any of their releases.
