It was seriously a GAME CHANGER for me and our household!! Being able to buy the same coffee that we had and just putting one scoopful into that little filter part is really easy and cheap!!
My friends tell me that the best way to take coffee is black. I've tried putting cream and sugar in it (yes, I've tried both separately too) and it just takes the fullness of the flavor out of it.
However, I find straight Arabica beans, or to be more simplistic, coffee where you have the fucking grounds in the cup (I mean seriously) way too bitter.

First of all... don't have ground in your cup. That's gross. I agree with you that black coffee is the best.
If you want to get started exploring the beautiful, wonderful world of coffee get a good quality, burr grinder. Burr grinders will give you more consistency in your grounds and won't inadvertently heat your grounds like a blade grinder. Or so I've been told. I've never actually experimented with multiple types of grinders.
You should also get a simple pour over coffee drip device. All you do is put a filter in it, put the grounds in the filter and then catch the drippings in your cup. A lot of people like french press brewers which are also great but I've never messed with them. You might have had grounds in your cup because your coffee was made with a french press and the grounds were too fine.
Once you've got your gear then just buy high quality beans and start brewing. You'll figure out what your favorite flavors are really quickly. All the beans should have flavor descriptions on the labels. Don't worry about organic vs non-organic beans but do make sure to get direct trade or fair trade beans. You want to make sure your coffee wasn't harvested by slaves.
To answer your question more directly, Arabica coffee is one species of the coffee plant. There are a lot of different sub-groups of arabica beans. Arabica plants are typically preferred over robusta plants because they are more delicate and therefore require more sustainable farming practices. They also have a broader flavor spectrum and less caffeine. Again, I don't know all of this for myself. It's just what I've learned in my research.
If the coffee you have had is too bitter then maybe try something from Latin America? Costa Rican and Nicaraguan beans typically have light and fruity flavors.
