Any possibility of this? I mean, it's not like Rooers are gettin' sick of them. I propose the first ever Thursday night Main Stage set with My Morning Jacket - let em kick of the festival right.
1-1-12 Bassnectar NYE SHOW! 1-21-12 G. Love and Special Sauce 3-1-12 Radiohead 3-9-12 Experience Hendrix 5-15-12 Jack White @ The Ryman 6-7-12 Bonnaroo 6-19-12 Roger Waters presents "THE WALL" 7-7-12 Ringo Starr's 72nd Birthday Party Extravaganza at the Ryman
I'm actually going to leave this one open. The old thread was for getting them at 2011 and has fallen back a few pages. Unless people start to complain we can have this be the 2012 MMJ thread.
Though mentions of a Thursday headliner are sure to annoy some ;D
I don't think we'll get a Thursday headliner soon and. MMJ belong at Bonnaroo but I wouldn't mind a year off right now.

Yeah, I saw them 3 times in 2011. They were all awesome shows, but there was not a major difference between them. If they were to come back so soon, I think a slot with an indefinite time limit would be necessary so they could reach back into their catalog a bit.
Here's a crazy idea...how about first ever Thursday night headliner?!
You know what would be awesome? Bringing them as a late night act like the old times (the ones where I wasn't at and had to hear about from dozens of enthuasiast Roo'ers). That would probably make my year.

Yup. They can come back any and every year and I would not mind one bit. In fact I'd love it. Just make them a mainstay at the fest like moe and Umphrey's at Summer Camp.
I think I got to walk behind Jim James for a while after the Eminem show last year. He was walking to That Tent to see Dr. John and he was talking with some guy and they seemed pretty invested in their conversation so I didn't want to interrupt. I also wasn't sure if it was him, I was looking at his back but it sounded and looked like him. Next thing I knew, he was inside the VIP section of That Tent and I didn't get a chance to say hi. Can anyone confirm or deny that he was in the festival as an attendee so that I can kick myself in the head?

My friend and I stopped to talk to him around that same time. It was right when the fireworks started going off and Jim said goodbye to us to watch the fireworks. I have met him several times over the years and talked to him about his days in Lexington. He said that he was looking forward to seeing Bootsy Collins. So I can confirm that he was there as an attendee.
And yes, I would like to see them back, but not in a headliner spot. They deserve it, but don't need it.

I really want them back but I don't really know where they fit in, lineup wise. They were a pre-HL last year so logically that would probably mean them returning as a headliner this year, which I don't see happening. Could they maybe be the Friday headliner this year? I would love it but I highly, highly doubt it.
If they come back they really need an open slot to keep playing all night dont get me wrong i had an amazing time the three times i saw them in 2011...but the shows were all the same. Im not saying its a good idead but IF bonnaroo were to do a thursday night headliner i couldnt think of a better band to kick off the weekend

Love this band, but that crap killed me.
And they shared the fucking setlist on facebook every time. Like they were bragging about how repetitive their live show was in 2011. I get the idea behind one setlist, but posting that same setlist give or take a song every night is kinda silly.

I enjoyed them posting the setlists every night on facebook even if only a few songs would be changed. That was the fun, seeing what kind of exclusive, rare song got played at that particular show.
I'm always really pleased to see bands/fans sahring setlists even if they aren't wildly different. I wish more bands did it.
Ya I loved the setlist sharing. I'm always the type that prefers setlist variation but I give MMJ a pass on this. If you saw multiple shows this year, especially back to back, you would know that they have huge amounts of variation in how they play many of their more common songs. A Gideon on Tuesday may sound completely different than on Wednesday. Also I think they do a good job of playing lots of the new material that they are promoting, most of the hits that people want to hear, and a ever changing selection of rarities for the hard core fans.

Yeah I actually thought they were mixing their setlists up quite a bit. Maybe not as much as they used to but definitely more than most current touring indie bands who will play literally the exact same set night in and night out. MMJ would sprinkle in 2 or 3 rare "oldies" from At Dawn or Tennessee Fire almost every show for different cities
Edit- I also loved the setlist sharing on Facebook
Anyone who complained about the Red Rocks setlist should have their MMJ fan card taken away. The Bear < Steam Engine was the greatest moment of 2011 for me hands down.
I'm praying for an epic MMJ return. Get them off the main stage, put em at Which for some more late-night magic. Hell, just give 'em the Superjam, you know they would run with it.
And to those complaining about every MMJ show being the same, you're nuts. Of the five shows I saw this year, I got a different few nuggets sprinkled in each set, and left every night with a different highlight.
I certainly did not intend to be in any way insulting with my comment about the 3 shows I saw in 2011 being essentially the same (with a little bit of variation). MMJ is my favorite band on the planet, and they put on a better live show than anyone in the biz, as far as I'm concerned. My main point was that, if they returned to Bonnaroo this year, it'd be awesome to put them in an indefinite time slot this time where they wouldn't have to be as pressed for time and need to play a very similar setlist to the Roo '11 show (not that I'd complain). On the other hand, since there is not a new album in the works, they could still probably vary the setlist greatly since there would be less pressure to promote a new album.

My dream MMJ setlist for a 2.5-3 hour show
1. Mahgeetah 2. Lowdown 3. Off the Record 4. Circuital 5. Gideon 6. Evil Urges 7. I Will Sing You Songs 8. Golden 9. The Way That He Sings 10. Phone Went West 11. You Wanna Freak Out 12. Wordless Chorus 13. Slow Slow Tune 14. Anytime 15. Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Pt. 1 16. Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Pt. 2 17. Cobra (Full)
---
ENCORE:
18. Holdin' On to Black Metal 19. The Bear 20. Steam Engine 21. Run Thru (Full) 22. Dondante 23. One Big Holiday
This needs to happen LN on the What stage in the next 2-3 years
I don't know. I actually like the Victory Dance/Circuital combo opener they've been using. And I'd love to hear some TF/AD gems like "Old Sept Blues", "They Ran", "O is the One that Is Real", "Lowdown", "Strangulation", etc. And oh god, "War Begun". I've heard some crazy performances of that song. And "Into The Woods", maybe not so great live but still an awesome song. Also, "Smokin From' Shootin'".
Man, MMJ has a lot of great songs. I just realized I'm dying to see them again even though I saw them twice last year.
I should have known better than to even somewhat complain about My Morning Jacket on this message board.
I was just bummed when I saw all the awesome rare songs I missed. Was it so hard to ask out of seeing them 3 times that I get a single "Lay Low"? Oh well, I still consider them one of the greatest bands around right now.
