I noticed last year at Bonnaroo after the last show when I was walking around everywhere...you can only go so far up to the main stage before there is a barrier and there's a little distance between that and the stage. Is that VIP only? Or is that just for those who get there very early?

i noticed that too
i think the idea was crowd control, to model it so that anyone could have an opportunity to go up close and not get packed in or rushed (stampeded) from the people behind ... also, because of the gap between the main group of people and the front, people leaving that area could have an easy way of getting out of the crowd, i.e. evacuate in case of an emergency

I noticed it during the John Butler Trio last year, I thought it was an awesome idea. We went right up to the barrier and chilled before the show, gave us something to lean on and the security guys were moderately friendly. It also provided a nice break in the crowd so those of us that were standing next to the barrier could see everything that was going on, even the short girl next to me to could see.
