2009 was hands down a better year for my tastes. I literally was inside centeroo almost the entire festival trying to catch acts. The entire Bela Fleck Curated African tent, Robyn Hitchcock, Jimmy Buffett, Al Green, Rod Y Gab, Booker T and the DBT's, Raphael Saadiq, Tony Rice, Del McCoury, Snoop, and Wilco were on the undercard. The Top was Phish x2, Springsteen, NIN, Beasties, and David Byrne. Which beats the hell out of Phish x1 Radiohead playing KOL stuff, RHCP, and The Beach Boys, like I said at least for my tastes.
With good additions this could be great, with more indie additions it will just be Coachella east.

I'm curious to hear what you think on Beach Boys vs. Buffalo Springfield, airline. You know your sh*t when it comes to 60s/early 70s music.
Well, the Beach Boys are a musical force only matched by The Beatles and George Martin. So they have that on Buffalo Springfield.
However, it's hard to view this as a real Beach Boys reunion without the late Carl and Dennis. I realize Buffalo Springfield wasn't a complete reunion either but the principle singers were all there. Furay's voice was in top form, as was Stills guitar playing (voice has lost a great deal over the years), and of course Neil was Neil.
Brian, on the other hand has obviously lost a tad since his Smile tour and such, but Jardine and Love's voices are still solid and Brian Wilson's band is completely unreal. By the time they get around to Roo, it is entirely possible they would be performing at the level of those Smile shows a few years back. If that were the case, it would be my top show of the weekend, no doubt.

I can agree with this. Great post. Glad I asked.
Just imagine seeing that video I posted of "You Still Believe in Me". I would probably break down right there in the pit and have to be carried out.

I do think that the additions have a chance to push this to my favorite lineup of all the Roos Ive been to. Im not even excited about one headliner this year, the undercard is exactly what Im looking for

I was all ready to disagree with you until I just looked at the 2008 lineup. Holy sh*t was that stacked. What have we been doing the last two years?
Don't get me wrong, 08 comes in a VERY close 2nd for me. However, when I look at 08 vs 12
Radiohead > Metallica RHCP < PJ Phish > WSP Bon Iver > Jack Johnson Beach Boys > Kanye (debateable, but I'm still in awe that I get to watch these icons on the Farm)
The undercard for 08 and 12 are honestly a wash, for me. This is hands down the best EDM Roo has ever offered. And correct me if I'm wrong, but there isn't a single EDM artist this year that has played the fest before (SBRTKT, FlyLo, Major Lazer, MiMOSA, Big Gigantic, Skrillex, etc) Thats HUGE for Bonnaroo to veer away from the played out, tried and true Bassnectar, Pretty Lights, Girl Talk, Tiesto, etc.

Yep.
Metallica, Pearl Jam, Kanye West, Chris Rock, Plant/Krauss/Burnett, Phil & Friends, MMJ, Raconteurs, Willie Nelson, Death Cab, Superjam, B.B. King, Les Claypool, Sigur Ros, Levon Helm, Ben Folds, Cat Power, Bluegrass Allstars, MIA, Umphrey's, Iron & Wine, Yonder, Swell Season, Zappa Plays Zappa, Talib Kweli, Trucks/Tedeschi, Gogol Bordello, Broken Social Scene, Robert Randolph, Bisco, Mastodon, Lupe Fiasco, Against Me, Sharon Jones, Ozomatli, Solomon Burke, Chali 2na, Drive By Truckers, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, MSTRKRFT, !!!, the Avetts, Firey Furnaces, Ghostland, Jose Gonzalez, Minus the Bear, the Coup, Battles, Trombone Short, Wood Brothers feat. Medeski, Two Gallants, the Sword, Vampire Weekend, Little Feat, Chromeo, Felice Brothers, MGMT, Adele, Reggie Watts, DJ Logic, Bear In Heaven.
That's STACKED.
I agree w/ Juggs here i think if we should be comparing this year to anything it should be 2008. The diversity and depth for my tastes it has to be the best, but im very happy with this year so far. I think with additions this year I will be more excited about this years line up than 2010 or 2011.
Last year when I saw the lineup I seriously said "Holy quack". So many of my favorites were there last year. This year I'm sort of like "eh". I'm not the biggest Radiohead fan, RHCP I can take them or leave them, and I don't like Phish or jam bands at all. There are definitely a lot of other groups that I like there this year but nothing I'm over the moon about like last year. The Avetts are actually my favorites right now but we just saw them and will be seeing them two more times before Roo so that's not enough to make me crazy about the rest of the lineup.
On the otherhand, my husband is like "holy quack" for this year as more of his favorites are there than last year. He's way more excited this year than me.
We got into a huge discussion last night about this very thing and it really comes down to individual music tastes but regardless I'm sure we'll both have an amazing time no matter who is there.

I'll agree with Beach Boys > Buffalo Springfield
But 2012, while great at this early point, still doesn't equal 2008/2009. Definitely better than 2010, obviously. I'd say it's probably a little better at this early stage than the 2011 finished product was, which is impressive, but it will very likely get even better.
There's definitely an argument to be made that it's missing a few key components right now (heavy metal, country, some bigger "rock" acts, etc.) but the headliners are undeniably better. I would say The Strokes/The Black Keys/MyMorningJacket are stronger for me than BonIver/The Shins, so that makes the subheadliner big acts better in 2011, but I think that as various additions come in, it will only grow progressively stronger.
yea, that's a given (2012>2011). The last two years at Roo have been among the weakest lineups the Roo ever put out. This year is certainly better than anything since 2009.
However, no Bonnaroo lineup, as of yet, has compared to 2006... Far and away the best they've ever had, and the festival itself was really amazing. And so many of you weren't even there for the first year, so your experience is limited to "looking at the lineup," but anyone who was there will tell you it ranks among the best. Festival was so incredibly different back then. It is pretty amazing how much Roo has changed since then (for better and worse). For me, the festival has yet to get back to the 2006 level.
Oh RHCP is definitely > Eminem. The only way I could've been more disappointed with Eminem's show last year was if it was longer.
I actually was listening to random RHCP tracks today and got excited. I think seeing 70,000 people lose their poop to By The Way will be awesome.
Well, I saw RHCP play live on Paladia last night. They were awful. I highly doubt they'll get as big a crowd as Radiohead does on Friday. And by "highly doubt" I mean "I'd bet my testicles."
My roommate loves them, so I brought him in for a biased opinion, but in the opposite direction of mine. He watched for about a song and a half before asking me to change it because he was getting depressed.
If they play like they did in that show, I'll happily be taking in the Ham Sandwich set and prepping for a wild late night.
