First off, this'll be my 1st Roo, so.......if I can't leave until Thursday by noon at the latest, when should I head out? What can I expect about waiting in traffic if I leave, say 4:00 PM Thursday vs 6 am Friday morning? And what can I expect about the spot I get to park/camp in---will it be way worse if I leave Friday @ the crack of dawn? Any info would be helpful - - thx!!!!!!!!
Had a real easy time getting in around 4 on Thursday last year. Good spot, no traffic. Based on when our flight lands, we will probably arrive around that time again this year.
Not a substantial amount at all, probably took about half an hour once we arrived at the entrance to us parked and setting up camp. Obviously have to count time getting through security as well as getting directed to your site.

I'm planning on getting in early Thursday morning - probably around 5-6am. Hoping that this way I'll avoid being placed in BFE and also be able to set my camp up in the daylight... my original plan was to come in Wednesday night but it seems like if I do that I'll be sitting in my car for 5+ hours and get a bad spot.

Personally, I think that 6am Thurs still puts you in that risky window (assuming you're trying to avoid both BFE and a line) you will probably avoid BFE, but I think you will still be in for a long wait in line. It's just kinda part of the deal with GA Roo, I'm afraid.

Friday morning is dodgy. There is no traffic at all, but there is also no parking organization. Nobody gets there Friday (except me). I have arrived on Friday 3 times, once in GA, once in VIP, once in Guest. GA was tough, but we ended up getting REALLY lucky (by opening a gate at a fence that no one had thought to open). Guest was tough, but we ended up getting REALLY lucky (by moving a group of trash cans). VIP was easy but we were way back in VIP.
Lots of tradeoffs between Thursday and Friday. Thursday night is a kind of frenetic, weird night. But when you wake up Friday morning, you get to immediately start to "feel" Bonnaroo. You laze around, start drinking casually, joking with people, etc. Friday afternoon may be my favorite time at Bonnaroo. However, when I get there on Thursday I am completely ruined by Sunday. If you arrive Friday, you get 1 extra good night sleep and 1 extra night with minimal alcohol consumption. You can work for 1 more day. By the end of the weekend I always feel better. However, when you arrive on Friday, you don't quite settle properly. I feel that I don't start having a ridiculously fun time until the late night Friday. If I'm there anytime Thursday (even 2AM), Friday is just so much more fun.

if i at least don't get put in BFE, the wait won't be that horrible. but we'll see.. seems like it's impossible to tell where you'll be placed/how long you'll wait at this point

I've said it before and ill say it again... please take no offense i truly mean none
but the roo line is a crap shoot, get there when you will and keep the good vibes rolling. I'm convinced that the better neighbor you are the better the times will be. wait in the line, surrender to the heat and just keep on smiling... anger and confrontation do us all no good and you will encounter it. after 9 roos i can say with certainty that there will be a few trying to cut in line and flip you off while they do it... live your karma
Last year was the first year that I didn't arrive Friday morning and got the worst camp spot that I've ever had (back by the horse stables). It's all about luck, really. I can say *knock on wood* that every single year that I've gone, I have been very, very, very, very fortunate to be on the last row of campers directed in to my area. It's offered some extra room and an easier way out in case we decide to leave Sunday morning.

2010 I arrived Thursday around 11pm and there was no line really, my camping spot was about a 20 minute walk from centeroo? Last year we arrived Friday morning and got a hotel, so we went to day parking. There was a small line, only had to wait a few minutes to get in.
This year I'll be getting there Thursday on time, but we're staying in a hotel again. I don't know if we should drive in and possibly wait in a huge line for day parking (I don't even know if there is one), or if we should just get a taxi to drop us off as close as possible & walk in..
Every year I end up talking to a first-timer who says they aren't planning to leave until Thursday night or Friday morning. And every time I strongly warn against this. The Thursday afternoon/evening vibe is out of this world. You want to get there in time to see several acts on Thursday.
No matter the lineup, Thursday is just a really great time to be at 'Roo.

It seems like opening up the site on Wednesday makes a big difference, no one seems to have any horror stories from last year. We got in at about 2am Thursday night/Friday morning last year with no wait whatsoever, plan on pulling in around 4 pm Thursday this year.

each year i've arrived earlier than the previous year. you cant get there early enough, and you cant leave late enough.
and i still have a horror story... planned on getting there at about 9pm wed night, so we finally hit the traffic at about 10pm. after most of the 24 highway loop, we were rerouted to some BFE back entrance in the woods (awesome locals selling hotdogs and moonshine on the roads though) and landed on the campgrounds in what had to be the furthest possible spot at about 5:30am. our only choice was to move to tent only, where we finished setting up at about 8:30am. this year i want to be there when the gates open.
I arrived at the farm at 3 or 4 in the morning of Friday and ended up 7 minutes away from Centeroo. I'm hoping this wasn't luck because I would love to do the same thing next year.
Regardless of how short of a walk to Centeroo you had, missing Thursday was a bad choice.
(if it was in your control)
It was my brother's graduation. There was only one show that I wished I had seen on Thursday, anyway.
Well, you have a reasonable excuse, at least. But I discover bands on Thursday every year, I see it as my day to sample stuff since Fri-Sun is usually dedicated to acts I already know.
If you have the chance this year, definitely go for Thursday, it's a lot more laid back than the other 3 days.

It's the coolest thing to walk around the completely empty campgrounds on Wed and wake up Thurs and they're mostly filled up. Then you wake up to a traffic jam outside your tent on Friday.

I LOVED hanging out Wed. night myself. The vibe was pretty crazy. Just alot of folks getting their Roo on. Stumbling to TO at 3am is one of my favorite foggy memories. Then waking up Thursday right across from the arch after barely remembering how I even got there. Priceless! Fantastic way to kick things off!
