HAHA! I can't get started on speculation (more like malarky theory time) until at least January. Hangout was killer, Trey killed it and Stevie has lost his damn mind
Halfway into Stevie's set or at some point after he started crying and randomly started yelling "gimmie a g flat" and other shit like that and stopping a song in the middle of it, I was like "somebody dosed Stevie..."
Top ten sets of weekend 1. Anders Osborne 2. Jim James 3. YYYs 4. RRE 5. The Roots 6. Tom Hetty 7. Grizzly Bear 8. Mule 9. Stevie Wonder 10. TAB
Fest was good, LEO presence was nuts compared to last year. I spent most of my time watching main stage acts from the balcony and raging with friends. Hangout was a good time this year but was def lacking that X factor for me.
Copied from the World Wide Web (searched for directions for making colored powder used in color run):
Color Powder Recipe Supplies:
1 lb Non-toxic Tempera Paint Powder - I liked the Colorations brand the best. Hobby Lobby carries one brand, but that is the only store that I found that had the powder in the store. 1 lb Corn Starch - Walmart has 1 lb of corn starch for $0.97 Food processor
Directions Add 1 pound of Tempera Paint powder to the food processor. Pour about 1/3 of the corn starch into the food processor and pulse until well combined. Add the next 1/3 of the corn starch and process again. Add the remainder of the corn starch and process until completely combined. Repeat with as many different tempera colors as you want.

Awesome pics Will. And I agree with you Sarge, something was missing this year for me. I'm thinking that maybe my condo was too close and it made going back to the spot too easy, so I missed some things I wanted to see up front cause I could hear them from the balcony. It was great, it just wasn't super-great as it has been in years past. And I'm still partial to that very first year, even though the lineup in year two was by far the best. Anyone else feel that way?

Nice write up and I think we saw the same shows on Friday/Saturday. You must have been staying at the San Carlos too. The shots from the condo behind the Chevy stage look just like my pics from our room there.
I had a good time at the fest. The nice thing about the lineup this year was that there were no shows where I felt compelled to fight my way up front. It was kinda nice just hanging back and enjoying things from a distance.
A couple of folks earlier mentioned VIP. This was my 3rd year doing VIP and I was slightly disappointed this year. The new viewing area at the Chevy stage was greatly appreciated especially for the Shins, the Roots, and Imagine Dragons. The food was also much better this year and more organized. The previous two years you would just kinda show up and there might be something happening in the food tent in the grove. Previously there were hot dogs, subs, and the occasional oysters on the half shell. This year they had the food available from 1-4p. Friday they served chicken/andouille Jambalaya, Saturday was pulled pork, and Sunday was cajun corn/potatoes w boiled shrimp. They also had the snack shack available all day which had krispy kremes, slim jims!, miniature moon pies, fruit, etc.. Those were the positives.
The disappointing things were the bar and the free schwag. The bar this year was limited to 2 beers; bud and bud light. As a non-fan of both of these that sucked. No worries though as being from KY I'm a bourbon drinker at heart. Only problem, no bourbon this year. Vodka and rum were the only spirit offerings. Previous years they had a full bar offering and a wine tent with couches, etc., so being that booze is one of my justifications in spending more on VIP that was disappointing. The ticket cost went up $100 again so I was expecting more options, not fewer.
The schwag thing is minor but, last year as an example, I went home with a bunch of HOF koozies, sunglasses, shirts, ear buds, etc.. This year we showed up when the gates opened Friday and grabbed a koozie but within an hour they were gone and the rest of the weekend only saw stickers and bazooka bubble gum as freebies.
I will be back next year and doing VIP again. On the whole it's a great time!
I totally agree on VIP. I struggle internally with being spoiled on this as the media basically get VIP access at the fest. There were two times this year when Media were not allowed into the VIP on the main stage, thus not being able to shoot photographs. The big one was when it happened for Stevie Wonder. We were pretty bummed when we walked up to the boardwalk and they said Media can't come in here, and it was the same person who had let us in all weekend. The communication was pretty unlike Hangout in other Media areas and concerning VIP this year and tons of folks were upset about not having beverage options, then the grove running out of liquor on Sunday. I bet they'll get it right next year, and I wouldn't be surprised if someone pretty significant on their staff reads this board and others. They got a ton right, including the Chevy VIP that you mentioned, just not as much as usual.
Also, did anyone else think the Hangout logo for this year was extra-crappy? Maybe there's a heartfelt story behind it or something.

...Another fun year. My crew used to be lineup jumpers...usually a different fest every year, but we've now done three Hangouts in a row. We came for the lineup in '11, but we've stayed because the location and amenities just make it hard not to have a great time. We've done VIP at most of the other fests, but it just hasn't seemed necessary for the HO...condo, bars, restaurants, we always can stand pretty much wherever we want. It's just hard to beat.
Petty and Shins were both a lot better than I expected. I expected ho hum, and had fantastic times at both.....enjoyed RRE, Sheepdogs, SStoopid, Galactic, Trey.... Stevie was the only real miss for me. He just seemed like a mess. We had 8 in our group...one person was blown away, one enjoyed, the rest of us ended up in the Hangout Bar eating crab legs (where they were actually streaming the show with pretty solid sound).
Thanks for the dates Blotter, I've already booked the condo for next year!

I wish I would have thought to do this. That's all I wanted to do after TAB was gorge on food and crab legs would have been the tiddeys. I settled for some spicey pie, a ride on the ferris wheel, watched Stevie from a distance for about an hour while laughing at random spunions walking by, and then ate some chicken on a stick on the way back to the condo.
10. Delta Rae 9. The Revivalist 8. Luella and the Sun 7. Benny Benassi 6. Conspirator 5. Bright Light Social Hour 4. Ellie Goulding 3. Stevie Wonder 2. The Black Crowes 1. Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Honorable mention Wolfgang Gartner and Wick it the Instigator

no one seems to be mentioning grouplove, they were for sure in my top 3, they blew me away, and if anyone could bring out that many people for that early of a set. Just wow.

Anybody capture my flag in any good photos? See my avatar. The flag is in honor of a fallen friend and we're putting together photos for his family to represent his presence with us at the fest

Didn't get a pic of it but I hung out with you at Anders Osborne! You had a crew so maybe you aren't the main guy I was hanging with. I have the giant red beard and you fed me some of your dinner.

I wasn't the main guy you were talking with but I remember you from the show. Hard to forget the big red beard. Good times!

Mikeybruce i will have to check the photos but I'm pretty sure we were side by side for quite a few shows. If i dont have my own flag i tend to make "homebase" near one. Moe& tab are the main two that come to mind. Thursday & friday i was carrying a white jerry garcia flag. Sat some illiterate whore took it from me in the line and threw it away?!?!? luckily I asked every volunteer if they had seen it the next day and sure enough one pulls it right out of his pocket and gladly gave it back. Great guy, later gave him quite a few good Asheville beers in return.

I know what you mean about getting through the line. We had our troubles at first but then I started having my friend bring it in through the media entrance. 9 times out of 10 we're always front right (with the main stage at hangout being the notable exception since its much less crowded on the ocean side) so you know where to find us. I think Interlocken and MagFest are the next two stops for the Zutes flag so hope to see you there.
