I left my campsite (Semmi, pretty much BFE) to take a leak and saw one of them land a few feet away. Someone picked it up, then a few seconds later another dude came running and said he had been following it for 5 minutes and asked if he wanted to keep it. The guy said no so the other dude kept it. Looking back, especially now that they might be banned, I kinda wish I had made an effort to catch it. Next time!
While I chilled at camp, one flew toward the EZ Up. I almost fell over backward in my chair, tracking it, my head tilting upward. I ran to the back of the camp, where it fell by a truck. A guy in a Mario suit put out the flame.
I told him about how I had seen Luigi earlier at Radiohead. He asked if it was a tall, skinny bastard. I said yes.
Then I realized that lanterns are as dangerous and as safe as everything else in life.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

never considered catching one as a souvenir, always thought they look like used condoms when they land.
I think they're harmless. As I said I'm from Thailand, where they are from, and I've never seen one do anything horrible. My only concern would be someone returning home to a melted tent where one landed, but in general they don't land until the flame goes out. Plus they are so trippy to look at. I like the ones with the flashing green lights inside.

Pretty sure the green flashing was from the green laser pointers?

I thought do too but after seeing multiple ones like that, moving quickly I realized either there a lot of people with a lot of time and accuracy or it's part of the lantern. That and I saw one go up and they turned on the light.

Yeah I saw that one go down in flames into the crowd at RHCP. Glad to hear no one got burned. I'm on the fence about 'em. They are really cool looking but OTOH that one that burned and crashed gives me pause. I can't imagine having something like that fall on me while I'm spun up. Not cool braaah.

A problem with the lanterns is as they go up people throw glowsticks at them and then... they go crashing down. I agree that they're dangerous and agree that sometimes lovely danger is a good thing in this overprotective plastic ball pit of an America we are creating.
Did you guys hear during RHCP when Flea said "What the quack is that, is it a blimp?" referring to one of the lanterns and then he said something about he couldn't tell how far away it was.
I remember that. Lots of lanterns were going up on Saturday night.

I didn't see that! So glad it didn't land near me.

Yeah you're right, not wanting to get your shit melted or get burned by some guys flying candle is totally "overprotective"
I saw one almost hit a beer tent and another land in the middle of a crowd of people during Phish.
i saw the one at phish as well, it was hovering about 2 feet above everyones heads for a good 50 feet then started to drop, it was about a foot away from my face and i tried to catch and put it out so it doesn't set someone aflame, but my reflexes were way to slow and i missed it. i saw it come about 2 inches away from this girls head a lil ways away from me but at the last second it got some lift and went right up in the air over the bleachers. way to close for comfort imho.
Boo hoo waa waa a bunch of crybabies. Sky lanterns are pretty awesome. People love to complain and you guys fit the bill. How come nobody gets hurt in Asian countries when they light thousands of these off. Stay home and live in a bubble.

Not to mention that in the asian countries it's part of their culture and they probably adhere to safety regulations, make sure wind conditions are right and what not. Oh yeah, and the people lighting them are probably not drunk/on drugs. Key differences.
But yeah we're totally being sticks in the mud. It's all good, bro!

Asians are humans too, and being human I seriously doubt they follow any kind of safety regulations or abstain from alcohol and do foolish things.

I'm sure that the person whose job it is to light off the fire lantern is probably not drunk/high/tripping. If it's part of an official ceremony, I really doubt that they let some random wasted dude attempt to send a bag of fire through the sky.
Thanks for insinuating that I was trying to imply racism with my statement, though!

But why do you make it seem like the only people who are releasing them at Bonnaroo are under those conditions? I'd bet there were some sober people that send them off as well. They probably follow all the safety instructions.
We did it last year we had training sessions with the people releasing them before we did it and monitored them so they wouldn't release them early. We recruited about a half dozen people to release as many as we could before we got shut down. It was cool but we also made sure the weather was conducive. It's obvious though that there will be careless people and more than likely at Bonnaroo they will outnumber the cautious ones. Too bad Bonnaroo doesn't have an artist release them safely like a fireworks display so that they can be enjoyed and set off in a safe manner. They probably aren't any less toxic than fireworks and people do love seeing them.
I think the real problem is people don't consider wind speed, wind direction, and their location relative to vendor stands, speaker towers, and trees. I'd blame the lab rats before I blamed the chems, some people just shouldn't play with fire

I'm not assuming ALL of the people were all/any of those, but come on, lets be real here, a decent amount were.
It's not just that aspect either. I'm sure that they launch them off from a higher location and not just around huge crowds of people. I'm really not for spoiling anyones good time usually, but if your good time involves putting other people in danger of getting burnt, that makes you a jerk.
I just hate when people don't think their actions through and then defend it under the guise of "hey it's all good bro! I'm just trying to have a good time, don't harsh my vibes!"

Yea that really bothers me sometimes too. There are other situations where someone will be an asshole and then just try to pass it off as "sorry bro....we're all having fun though so whatever"
To an extent, they're right I guess. I mean, nobody, to my knowledge, got burned or injured by them this year. If people keep using them I'm pretty sure we won't always be that lucky. Theres already a lot of potentially dangerous things at Bonnaroo, I'd just rather not add floating bags of fire to the mix.
