Sports Night is awesome, and The Social Network is a great film and it's about facebook. He made a great film about facebook.
So I'll make up my own mind too on this one. And I'll be willing to give it a full season before I decide to give up on it. From what I understand, the reviews are based off the first 4 episodes only.
I liked it pretty well. Reminded me a lot of Sports Night. That's a good thing for the most part, and Jeff Daniels should get some award consideration out of a role like this. He's perfect for it.

I liked it too. I can totally see where the critics are coming from being annoyed with Sorkin's self-righteous, witty dialogue that seems to infest every character on the show, but I kinda have a guilty pleasure for that thing, no matter how unrealistic it may or may not be. Hope it at least makes it through one season.

I didn't know witty dialogue was a negative (for critics, at least). I'm pretty sure a big part of the reason I like Sorkin's stuff is because it's witty. Call me old-fashioned, but I like my comedy to require at least a functional brain to be understood.
And to echo something said above, this is a perfect role for Daniels.
I do think the dialogue in the first episode was a little more over-the-top than we usually get from Sorkin. That was really the only issue I had with the episode. It got to a point where it sounded too unrealistic, even for Sorkin's standards.
Sorkin's stuff reminds me of some of Cary Grant's best work. His Girl Friday and Philadelphia Story both could have been written by Sorkin in another era.
I think the show has been great so far. I don't usually pay attention to critics but I have read some recaps/reviews for this show. I can agree with some of the critics bashing of how the women are portrayed. It seems every woman(besides Olivia Munn's character) so far has been an overemotional dimwit.
I enjoy this show, as most of you i like almost anything Sorkin writes. However my one qualm and i think that this is being said in the reviews of the show is just how preachy it seems. But at the same time i would like to know exactly how much is based on actual news and facts. Like last nights ep with all the Tea Party attacks, is most of the interviews he does based on actual information, in which case it's like a drama that is also a real News network since they're reporting the news. I guess i don't read as much news as i should but yeah. other than that i enjoy this show a lot
The preachy stuff I don't mind. That's just Sorkin on his soapbox. If we didn't care for what he had to say, then we wouldn't watch this show.
The thing about this show that drags for me is all the relationship drama. It's so contrived and plain uninteresting. When Sorkin sticks to the premise of the show, that's when its interesting. Watching Will McAvoy rip into the Tea Party was fun and awesome. Watching Jim try to flirt but not flirt with Maggie who is dating Don but then not dating Don... whatever don't care.
I love the show thus far because it focuses on something that I've been talking about for years: the lack of a unbiased news agency. I just want news, I don't want anyone telling me how they feel about it. I realize this tool influences people with less confidence in their opinions, but for anyone who doesn't need to be told what to think a lack of an unbiased news agency means I have about 10% content and 90% opinion and generally speaking I just don't give a sh*t about what most people think.

Forreal though, loved the first episode. Second episode kind of dragged, but I can see a great deal of potential. West Wing remains one of my favorite shows of all time.
Episode 4 shit the bed pretty bad. But I've seen far worse shows than this.
Four episodes in the characters and drama just have no depth. The show's entertainment comes solely from Sorkin going into politics-preacher mode, but the fact that he makes no effort to disguise it with fleshed-out characters that are nothing more than obnoxious, self-righteous manifestations of himself is pretty annoying and just plain lazy in my opinion. There really isn't a likeable, interesting person on this show.
I'm going to give it to the end of the season, but if the show doesn't even out by episode 10 I probably won't tune in for season 2.
I thought episode 4 had some hilarious moments. I keep defending this show like I am a Sorkin fan-boy but I am really not, there is just something about Jeff Daniels playing a dramatic role that I love. Also, a show about cable news is captivating. I will harp on this again, If I were a woman I would probably not watch it anymore these female characters are completely ridiculous and a bit offensive.
I don't care about the political slant, I like the way this basically puts all biased media (liberal or conservative) into question.
Definitely liked last episodes point on the debates, and how they are pandering to the lowest common denominator to avoid speaking on real issues, or intelligently in general.
When the President's 6th grade reading level speech is "too smart" for America, America's f*cked up.
