It's not all terrible. It's here to stay. Deal with it. I'll show you the stuff that won't totally hurt your ears and impress your girlfriend at the same time.
Day 1:
Eric Church's Chief
Not only will you like this album, you'll love it. If you can't relate to Springsteen, you've never had summer love. Church broke me into country and he WILL be the man to crossover country and rock.
I hope y'all enjoy this thread, I'm gonna keep it going till I get boo'd off.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Hakuna, you are probably one of the few people who I would not boo off for starting a thread like this.
I grew up with my mom listening to classic country in the 1960s...stuff like George Jones/Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline, Jim Reeves, Conway Twitty, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, etc...and I really can't say that every drop of me hates country...I just never really am in the mood to sit around and listen to it.
That being said, on the way to the campout in TN this March I found some radio station up near Chattanooga...don't remember what it was...but my oh my, it played some good OLD stuff. Good singalongs that I was surprised how many I remembered the words to.
Plus, I think that the memories of Hee-Haw on the TV as a child are too powerful to overcome. Child abuse by TV, it was.

You call it country, I call it bad Rock And Roll.
Seriously though, I'm sure there is still some good stuff coming out of the Nashville machine. I liked that Jamey Johnson record that came out a couple of years ago. Texas artist Cory Morrow used to put out quality songs, but I haven't heard any of his latest music.

I frequently say I dislike country, however Uncle Tupelo is technically alt country, and Uncle Tupelo is one of my favorite bands of all time. I guess this means I'm either a hypocrite, or I approve of this thread.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
^ Good point. I usually say (about 98% of the time) that I *despise* country, but The Civil Wars are technically considered a country act. And I love them.
I disagree with their category; I think they're folk/Americana. But I suppose there's a Venn diagram or line graph somewhere to show the overlap of true country artists vs alt/country or folk/rock ones. Oooh, if anybody gets bored... just sayin'
Personally my taste has evolved to where currently my favorites seem to be in the alt/country + folk/rock cross over stuff. Like Uncle Tupelo, Tweedy's other band Wilco is probably my favorite band and even they were considered country at one point. That said I'm going to lean more towards "radio" country which has more of a stigmata attached to it.
Dierks Bentley's Feel That Fire
Top Tracks Beautiful World(Featuring Patty Griffin) | Sideways | Little Heartwrecker
Dierks is one of the best in the business at changing pace on a dime. His has no problem mixing his albums with slow ballads and drinking/party songs. A lot of country acts are good at one or the other, but Dierks is great at both.
Y'all probably have heard Jason in his duet with Kelly Clarkson. Good song, but not even close to his finest. Wide Open is where I think he was at his best, just after finding his own style but just before stardom.
Top Tracks This I Gotta See | Keep The Girl | She's Country
I would just like to take this opportunity to say that BR549 (all the original member's) will be playing with Old Crow at Fontanel on July 28th. If you like alt Country this is kind of a big deal.
I too mostly enjoy the older stuff. One of my favorite singer songwriters is John Prine. I guess he is considered country folk. Also any fans of Zac Brown Band? They put on a killer live show, and I am digging most of their new album.

I see that Dwight Yoakam is recording an album with Beck. I'd be interested in hearing this. He's one of the few major country acts today that bucks the Nashville system by recording his own songs in California.

Oh. My. F*ck.
Yeah I am broke and trying to figure out how to get the kids and I on the guest list.

Love Dwight!
I grew up listening to the Judds, Reba, Garth, Alabama, ect. Yeah, all pop country, but I have no shame- still listening to them from time to time. So what? I love good vocalists and good harmonies. I can always find that in country music.
