I do try. Honestly, I multitask when watching most of this type stuff unless it's just highly entertaining. I also consider most mainstream stuff to be piles of shit as well. So it all evens out.
I'd still put my movie collection up against pretty much anyone on this board.
Plus, the biggest piles of shit tend to be more entertaining than the average or even above average quality film or show, today. For instance, I watched "Unforgettable", the new "thriller" with Katherine Heigl and Rosario Dawson... fucking awful and amazing, I got more enjoyment out of that than Rogue One, Kong Skull Island, Alien Covenant or most of the decent action/adventure movies I've seen in the last few years. Unforgettable was what its name suggested.

haha. THIS exactly. I thought Rogue One was kinda bullshit and have no interest in ever watching it again. It was cool to see a different side of the Star Wars universe but the characters were dull and underdeveloped. I left the theater feeling very underwhelmed by the whole thing. Pretty much the same for Alien: Covenant. Although I was more disappointed in it because I actually somewhat liked Prometheus and was hoping they delivered something that tied it all up nicely. As you said, they are decent but not always that entertaining.
A good bad movie can be entertaining on multi-levels. Hammy characters spouting terrible dialogue. Insane plots that are comedy gold on their own. Awful special effects. There's just a multitude of ways bad film making is fun to watch and dissect. Sometimes you find hidden treasures that transcend their own limitations and the talent levels of those involved.
Rogue One was just a nothing movie. I don't know why everyone gushed about it when it came out.
I don't really like the idea of Star Wars side stories as movies. They just seem unnecessary. I would be interested in an Obi-Wan movie between 3 and 4 though.

I would like it if the side movies were different in tone and style than the main storyline. Based on Rogue One (could have been a fun heist movie) and what happened with Lord and Miller getting fired off of the Han Solo movie, I don't think Disney is very comfortable with that. The last thing they're willing to do is take any sort of risk with Star Wars.
I got the Five Films box set years ago for a birthday gift after I fell in love with The Killing Of A Chinese Bookie. Then I saw Shadows and never looked back. Congrats on making me dig that out today.

Funny your bring that up - I first heard of Cassavetes when Savages and Ibeyi raved about the Five Films box set. I only noticed my library had a copy of it yesterday and thought "Well, I guess I should!" Wasn't a big fan of the way the Lelia story was sort of resolved halfway through, but I have a feeling I'd like it more on repeat viewings.

I'm partial to Woman Under The Influence and Faces, but they're all great.
What do you think of Rabid? I reviewed it for Halloween last year and I thought it was just okay... most memorable thing about it was that crazy scene with the car falling onto a freeway.

I looked back and agree with what you said then. It never grabbed me like Shivers or The Brood, so it's certainly not what I'd recommened first to someone wanting to check out his early films. It's not awful but Shivers and Romero's The Crazies are much better 70s films within that sub-genre.
And agreed on the freeway scene. Pretty much all the smaller hints of how the virus was spreading beyond the confines of her story were well excuted for that budget. One of several hints of what Cronenberg was capable of. There was even a scene that reminded me of that awesome long take at the beginning of A History of Violence. Bishop I forgot to mention Chambers. She really was kinda good. Haha. A lot of layered emotions in the seduction scenes. She was a little flat at times but that's better than the hammy overacting you see in a lot of horror.

71 &72 Whoever made the tag lines on that French Connection poster didn't understand the movie at all. For one thing, that "good cop" is shooting someone in the fucking back on the poster.
