I remember seeing this when I was young, maybe a tween, maybe a bit younger, and being scared. Does it hold up?
It's alright. Good cast. The direction is spotty and it doesn't have nearly the atmosphere to justify it's two hour slow burn. But as far as it holding up, I'd say yeah. There's some creepy scenes.
Perhaps more interesting for what books it influenced? Certainly The Shining and likly House of Leaves. Seems like Evil Dead might have cribed some stuff as well.
It was a fun watch. If you loved the first one, of course, you'll enjoy this. I especially liked the Mounties and their quips, like when mocked for gaining their independence as late as 1982, one responded, "Maybe if we had our independence sooner, we'd have no gun control, not believe in evolution and all be morbidly obese without healthcare."
I'd be soooooo proud if I was him. Those garden scenes are still freaky to me. The gushing, wheezing sounds and just the claustrophobia of it all. Jebus.
And on an unrelated note, has anyone been watching Sharp Objects?
I’ve been loving Sharp Objects. I’m anticipating the new episode and what we will find out next all day each Sunday. The ending last week with the closing, “you’re not safe here”, was extra eerie.

I thought it was great, should end up on my top 10 of the years by the end. I'm not totally sure what all of it means, but it's really powerful, suspenseful stuff. Jaoquin is absolutely brilliant in this as is Judith Roberts as his frail mother. This is just a trippy, disturbing powerhouse of a film, and it's all amplified by yet another utterly brilliant score from Jonny Greenwood. It's kind of hard to recommend to just anyone, but I think most movie buffs should see it.
