I was thinking about this in the car yesterday at work. I was thinking about a couple of albums that I felt were an artist's best but always their last. It's great because they ended on a high note but is also sad because you always wonder what the next one would have been like if whatever ended their run hadn't happened.
The basic rules are it has to be the artist's last LP/EP and one that you feel is their best. If it is a band, parts of the band could have gone on to release solo stuff or with other projects. You can also include bands that may not be "broken up" but are on an extended hiatus.
Here are a few of mine.
Genghis Tron to me is like Hot Snakes to GL. I will talk about them at the slightest provocation regardless of if anyone else is interested. ;D A top 10 album for me and it is miles ahead of their previous album, Dead Mountain Mouth. They fall under the extended hiatus category.
I know some will disagree with me on this one, but I think this is Fugazi's best album. If nothing else, I think it serves well as a culmination of their progression as a band. This was released 11 years ago.
But Dave. They have been touring all year, you say. This is very true, but I haven't seen anything about a new album or any new songs being played on this tour. Also, one of their recent facebook updates makes it sound very much like there won't be more dates after this tour.
Another one people my try to argue with me on. Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk doesn't count because it wasn't finished when he died and was a posthumous release. This one is especially sad because Grace was just the beginning, and he is an artist that I feel would have just gotten better and better.
Yes, this one is technically an unfinished album, but the band agreed to release it as an EP, so it counts. I miss Botch.

ABSOLUTELY! Not only is this his best album, but it contains the song "Eternal Life" with its hauntingly foreboding lyrics:
"Eternal Life is now on my trail Got my red glitter coffin, man, just need one last nail While all these ugly gentlemen play out their foolish games There's a flaming red horizon that screams our names
You better turn around and blow your kiss hello to life eternal, angel
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver
Why you be trolling, sang? It's "greatest last albums" not "last albums".
I've honestly never listened to them. Good place to start?
well i love it, it's one of my favorites. they haven't put out an album since this one 10 years ago. they did get back together playing shows and put out an ep. if you like deftones you'll probably like glassjaw.
Spent some more time pondering this one - it's a very interesting question. Then I kicked myself for not thinking of Avalon sooner. Had to double check it was their last and it was, alas.
^ This, sir, is one of my all-time favorite albums. Thanks for the reminder. (Not that one can ever forget the songs "Avalon" or "More Than This" but well, the MMJ/Radiohead debate did make me forget about it briefly!)
