The movie Freejack came up in another thread, which reminded me how I wore out Jesus Jones's "International Bright Young Thing" on WUTK's New Rock 90 when I used to DJ in Knoxville back in (gasp, hack-hack) 1992 and 1993.
Which brought back a whole bunch of good memories: besides more or less co-ruling the bar scene on the campus strip with some top-notch bands--Blind Melon, Col. Bruce Hampton, etc.--we were also on the leading edge of the injection of 90s grunge into mainstream music. And I can't begin to tell you how important that was to us at the time...in those pre-Napster days a broke college student's listening choices were whatever was on the radio...basically classic rock, heavy metal, 80's hair bands, top-40, country, and maybe some kind of "soul" that was a catch-all for anything whitey couldn't dig.
So Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, the Smashing Pumpkins, and their ilk might seem like old hat now, but we were the first ones in town to play that stuff, and it was crucial in shattering the mainstream music model that was so boring to so many people.
Probably my favorite musical memory of that time was getting to interview and hang out with Trey and Fishman on their tour bus outside the Electric Ballroom up in Fort Sanders. If I remember right, Trey was bitching about how much money he'd lost on the tour gambling with the band and crew on...get this...chess games. Later on one of their sound techs spilled a beer down the soundboard, and Phish had to finish the rest of the set a capella. You can still find that set through eTree.
I also remember showing up to interview GWAR one afternoon and introducing myself to this gorgeous Tank Girl-looking blonde who was lazing in the sun outside the venue reading Hunter Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." We talked about the book for a while and then I went inside to do the interview (with Techno Desctructo)...and then later on at the show spotted the girl I'd been chatting up, on stage, in a chrome bikini playing the part of Slymenstra Hymen. So you never can tell about HST fans.
Anyway, I was hoping for two things in this thread. If you were or are connected in any way to your college radio station, even as an avid listener, please:
1) Put the music that was/is meaningful to you and your peers in context by telling us why, and
2) Post some of it...i.e., YouTube links to the most important/meaningful/fun/good songs.
I'll start with three:
The Smashing Pumpkins, "Today" -- kind of an anthem for a bunch of us.
The Chili Peppers, "Under the Bridge" -- the first "alternative" song I remember that got widespread classic rock station airplay
And one that never was particularly mainstream, but made me thrash like a mofo whenever I heard it..."One Word" by the Baby Animals.

I was friends with a GM of my college's station. He had a sports talk show on Fridays, and I was on it a bunch. One week he was in Vegas, I got to run the boards that week. A former roommate of mine and former station GM was there, let me go on for a few hours. Pretty awesome I say.
I still listen online a couple times a week. There's a good show on Sat morning from 8-11, which is a variety of genres but I like the host's tastes. The same guy has a roots Americana show Tuesday evening 5 to 9, which sometimes has great stuff too. And Sunday night metal has been a favorite of mine too.
I have a radio show at my college. I'll link you guys whenever we get the semester started in the next week or two. I'm always glad to have listeners (not many people at my school listen)

Me and a friend had a college radio show and the audience was primarily our family or a small group of our friends (probably no more than a dozen). But there were some locals who listened to it anyway and when they would call in to compliment us or ask for a song title/artist name we would get so giddy. It made us so happy knowing other people liked the music we were putting on there.
I got a LOT of music from that radio station. It was always really fun. We sometimes went long because nobody was on after us. Just great times playing music for a few hours.
Thanks so much for listening guys! Hope you enjoyed. Like I said, I typically only have ~5 listeners so whenever I get a couple extra it's really awesome.

But you're broadcasting live on the air, too, right? So how do you know how many listeners you have?

Yeah this is true. The broadcasting program we use shows us how many online listeners, so I just go based off that.
Just bumping this so everyone knows to tune in!!!! Currently jamming to some P-Funk. Having a good ole time. Tune in, call if you want, join the live chat. Something!
