At least NOLA Pelicans fans will have something to be hype about for once.
If Eric Gordon is healthy they have a legit team down there.
Holiday/Gordon/Aminu/Brow/Rob Lopez is a really solid, young core group. That team can make some noise with a healthy Gordon.
I completely forgot about Eric Gordon. Hopefully he can stay healthy the whole year. And I'm wondering what the ceiling is for Lopez. He had a solid first year in NOLA and I'm thinking he could have an even better year with someone with as good ball vision and movement as Holiday.
But yea, if they mesh well with the addition of Holiday, then it's definitely a team on the rise that could make some noise.
And to your point earlier, yep the Sixers have a new GM. Ballsy first move indeed. We're still waiting on a new coach tho!
The Team makes the AllStar the AllSttar dont make the team. I am totally happy with the trade. Not so with the lanky Center with the ACL problem, but the potential to progress as a team. My motto for the sixers after the AI era ws "stuck". We were stuck in one place being a young team with no identity. Thank God for Dougy C or the team woulda been a mess. There have been glimmers of hope here and there and Jrue is a damn good baller, but having that 1 guy on a team of youth makes them think the game revolves around him. The Sixers need to grow and learn their style of ball and not have the ball going through jrue every bucket. Jrue was leagues above the rest of the squad and will shine anywhere he is but to develop our young, unshaped core they need to grow together and not around an 1 allstar...IMO
Dude...what? Jrue was the most major part of your young core. If Nerlens Noel taps into his potential, I don't think it's the worst trade, but to say it was a GOOD move to trade Jrue Holiday away is just f*cking nuts.

I'd have to agree. How does it make any sense to trade a sure quality player for 2 unknown commodities. And centers with knee issues are a giant sore spot with Sixers fans right now.

Fair enough. I agree with your "stuck" label for the Sixers post AI. And yes we had some decent years under Doug Collins where another coach likely would've failed to make the playoffs with the same squad. It was somewhat disheartening to hear that he wouldn't be returning as coach.
But still, man am I bummed to see Holiday leave and along with him all the excitement he brought to the team. Where I disagree with your point is the development of our "young, unshaped core" who I just don't think are good enough to be the core of a contending team moving forward. The only young unshaped player on the team that I can think of and be hopeful about is Lavoy Allen. Thad Young, Turner, Hawes have been in the league a few years and I think are more role players rather than players to build a team around. That player (the one to build a team around) was Holiday. But I understand and can appreciate the team emphasis you're looking for. That team emphasis is something I think Collins tried stressing to the team, but it ultimately never took hold.
Weird night. Can't make up my mind how I feel about the Celtics trade.
I thought about starting the new NBA thread last night, but since the off season conversation doesn't usually amount to much on the these boards, compared to the NFL, I figured hold off and let any discussion happen in here.
I thought it was a very interesting and entertaining draft. I know there are no marquee stars, but there are plenty of guys in this draft who can become solid complimentary/role players.
I think the Celtics/Nets trade worked out well for both sides. Celtics were already going to have to blow it all up and start over, most likely, so stockpiling picks is fine. They have to handle Gerald Wallace's contract, but their back-court and wing positions are solid, as of now. Whose to say they can't use some of what they acquired to bring in some front-court guys to play now? The Nets want to win right now, and while I think hiring Kidd was counter-productive to that, bringing in 2 veteran guys who can still contribute at a high level and getting rid of some big contracts is a solid move. They have a very formidable starting lineup.

I see what all of ya are saying. JetSet your right the core is stong enough to be with I would say a Top tier Allstar. Jrue IMO got to good to early and wasnt paired with a decent backcourt partner. Its worth the price of trading Jrue (who no1 thought be this good this early) rather then just staying stagnant as team. The feel around here(philly) is that everyones mad because they just ran and got a Jrue jersey, dont know another sixers player by name, or that we aret gonna win the championship next year without him. We arnt winning a ship for awile, there was still room to grow with Jrue and now theres even more room to build a team w/o him. You would think we lost LBJ the way Philly is reacting.

The most bitter sixers fan out there is that guy who bought both the bynum and holiday jerseys
But really, you're on point with that statement. People here who don't even follow the Sixers or like the NBA are acting outraged as if they're invested in the team (the Sixers have got to be the lowest in terms of fan support for the 4 major sports in Philly). Personally I'm bummed he won't be playing ball for the Sixers anymore. Anyway, here's to the future, hopefully our draft picks prove the trade a success
KG and Pierce to Brooklyn is also really interesting. The exodus from Boston continues. Like Dr. Joe said I think this makes the Nets contenders in the East but I don't know if it puts them over the top. It'll be exciting to watch though for sure.

The Sixer's trade was a great move IMO. Jrue is an unbelievable player and it really does suck seeing him go, especially since it appears he's only going to keep getting better, but this move needed to be done. The Sixers weren't going to win very much with or without him; this deal can potentially end the viscous circle of mediocrity that has been going on for the past decade or so.
While the Sixers haven't had any luck with injured big men recently, Noels still has the chance to become a really solid NBA player, and most advanced metrics show he should have been the #1 pick. MCW is an ok pick-up, he can play D but couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Regardless, this move saved the Sixers $40 mil in cap space, and 2014 is going to be DEEP with talent. The Sixers will have two 1st round picks (both of which could potentially be top 10 picks). As good as Jrue was, this is a great trade and a chance for the franchise to head in a new direction.

Im excited to see Brooklyn play out this year. JKidd is league legend. Gonna be interesting to see him make the transition. With their strong veteran core I see them making a big play for top spot in the East. Them with the veteran leadership, The Bulls with their talent/defense, and the Heat being the team to beat should make for a very interesting year.
Boo draft. I admit I don't know much about Cody Zeller, and I'm sure he'll be an improvement over Byron Mullens. But man, what an unsexy pick. With Len and Mclemore on the board we had a great chance to address our offensive woes. Instead... we get a guy whose nickname is "Big Handsome". Fuck.
I might be the only one, but I feel like this was a real poor trade for the Nets. They certainly improve, but they still might only be the fourth best team in the East come playoff time. It might be helpful to JKidd to have all this veteran presence on the team but how will he manage the distribution of the shots and the minutes? How quick can this group of guys develop chemistry? I can't imagine all that transition to be an easy process for any team, much less one that surely realizes they don't have a lot of time to compete before those old Celtics retire. Can they throw it all together in a year? I don't think so. Count on a second round exit from the playoffs for these guys.

Bobcats needed help right now. Cody Zeller was, probably, the most complete big man in the draft. Both Len and Noel are projects. Picking Noel would have done nothing to help the offensive woes you speak of and drafting McLemore wouldn't have made a whole lot of sense, unless they were looking to trade, considering Henderson and Walker, the two best offensive players on the team, are guards. And if you put any stock into the questions about McLemore's attitude/passion/work ethic/whatever, the situation in Charlotte probably wouldn't be a great place for him to start. Zeller certainly wasn't a sexy pick, but it wasn't a dumb one.
Bargs needs a move like this. He obviously hasn't had the kind of impact in Toronto a #1 overall pick should have, and if I remember correctly the media folks were saying that the Toronto fans were pretty sour towards him this last year. Given the opportunity to restart as a solid rotation player on a playoff caliber team might be just the kind of change of scenery (and adjustment of pressure) that he needs. Then again, seven footers who can't grab more than five boards a game also get a lot of shit from the fans. And New Yorkers can bring a new level of vitriol. The guy seems soft and perhaps might have a hard time handling it. Still, it's certainly better than running Camby out there.
Does this mean that New York might go after a more run and gun style of play? I remember reading that Felton was endorsing an uptick in their pace, and a euro big man that can hit an open look could be real beneficial in that endeavor.
I don't know that they're rumors as much as people paid for their opinions weighing in with what they'd do. The Knicks can't even get a legitimate list of serious suitors for Chandler until Dwight signs somewhere, so their only real chance of getting good value is hoping Golden State misses out on Dwight and is desperate for a defense-minded center (which they are, Mark Jackson will kill a small child to get one at this point).
My whole thing is this: Why not use Bargnani as a big 4, keep Tyson at the 5, let Melo play almost exclusively at the 3, let Shump/Hardaway split at the 2 and bring in more PG depth? They're only going to trade Chandler to get another rebound & defense-focused PF so they can move Bargnani to the 5.
Chandler and Amar'e combine for $39 m in expiring deals next year. Kevin Love wants out of Minnesota (or so goes the rumor), so package Chandler, a bunch of picks, maybe Shumpert (if Hardaway proves worthwhile this year) in a deal for Mr. Love. he'd be a very good complement to the soft Bargnani and a back line of Melo/Love/Bargnani would be pretty tough to defend.
Between now and the end of 2014 I'm going to force "Knicks/Kevin Love" discussions into this thread about 2890342894 times, so prepare yourselves.
@approo- definitely agree that Noel doesn't make any sense. Don't think I mentioned him anywhere, and honestly with those scary knees I don't think I'd want him before Len anyway. Mclemore could have been helpful as a scorer off the bench, but guys with a poor attitude don't normally embrace a role like that on a non-contending team. So maybe Zeller is the best choice for his character, maybe Len wouldn't be worth the wait for development. Nothing to do at this point but wait and see.
Flanz- I could be wrong, but it seems like a Melo/Love/Bargs front line would not be real great protecting the rim. Love leaves a lot to be desired defensively, Melo can't bang with the bigger forwards and we've already covered the softness of Bargnani. That doesn't seem like a winning combination to me, unless you're just counting on scoring so much that post protection doesn't matter. Perhaps you know something more about it I don't...
It'd be horrible at protecting the rim, but they'd score 120 points a game as long as they had a good PG.
I'd feel a lot better about that situation if the team had a backup C who was a shot-blocker/rim protector that they could use in crunch time of close games on defensive sets.
No shame in wanting Tyreke Evans.... UNLESS YOU JUST TRADED YOUR LOTTERY PICK FOR JRUE HOLIDAY! Apparently, they want to keep Gordon so I guess that means Vasquez will be on the move? Not to mention how short-sighted it would be to give up on Austin Rivers already.
It was less than a week ago I was thinking how well the front office of NO had been positioning themselves for the near future. Signing Evans would be puzzling.
Post by Roo'adelphia on Jul 2, 2013 10:36:14 GMT -5
Tyreke is a spot filler (everything I wish Evan Turner would be) and a great asset to a building team like the Pelicans. Hes been good to a lackluster Kings squad and should provide good on the floor presence for a youthful team like NO. Personally been a fan of this dude since highschool. SouthEastern Pa represent.
Tyreke Evans is not a PG, that experiment went down in flames in Sac-Town.
He's a drive-first SG/SF who has an inconsistent shot and is going to be offered TWELVE MILLION dollars. He's taking minutes from Gordon (if he plays this year) and Aminu, who is quietly one of the better young all-around players in the league. JR Smith (who scores and rebounds more, is better at 3's, but gets less assists and shoots for a lower %) is going to get half of that. What's wrong with this picture?
They're about to sign a guy who plays the same position as their current franchise player. Great blueprint.
Post by Mista Don't Play on Jul 2, 2013 10:58:06 GMT -5
Fair point regarding his actual position, but I think the point still remains. You could play Holiday and Vazquez at the same time and bring Gordon off the bench, or whichever rotation you would like to do with the 3 of them. So adding Evans, who for 12 mil a year should be getting plenty of p.t., just clogs things up and hampers the development of Aminu and Rivers.
Yeah, I think this is a terrible signing. They're overpaying the player, they're bringing in a redundant starter who will take minutes from one of two starters (and likely both) in Aminu/Gordon and he's a player who has to control the ball to be effective, which is a problem since he's not a point guard or even a point-forward like LeBron is (running the offense from the wing).
It's amazing how one bad signing can change things, but I just don't understand it. I realize they need SF's (they have a good big-man rotation), but why wouldn't they bring in someone cheaper (a spot-shooter like Reddick/Dunleavy/Budinger) and save money for when they have to extend Lopez and Vazquez in a year? Or buy some mid-to-late 1st round picks?
I just don't understand the thinking, they're making Evans the 2nd highest paid player on the roster and he plays the same position as the highest paid player on the roster.
Post by Mista Don't Play on Jul 2, 2013 11:38:34 GMT -5
Exactly. There were much better and cheaper options for wing players. This is just going to tie up money they could use within the next couple years to bolster an already promising roster.
Yeah, exactly. I just get sad when a young team that is being built the proper way goes and makes a dumb big-money deal to generate buzz or to "get over the hump." Teams that "get over the hump" do so by building a team with a clear identity around a star player (or players). they do this by either a) getting elite talented players on the roster via the draft (also known as: "luck") and b) trading assets for established stars.
Evans is not an elite NBA player, he is not going to get you an elite NBA player (except for maybe in his final year when he's an albatross expiring contract). I'm hoping this is a smoke screen and someone else panics and spends $50m on Evans over 4 years. Let him go to a team I don't have a soft spot for.
