so it seems like every time I turn my head I hear about another new music festival. With the lineup of the All Points West Festival at Liberty State park recently being announced I was just wondering how these other festivals might compare to bonnaroo. I cant imagine any of them could give off the great vibe that bonnaroo does. However, some of them are located in more easily accesible places and in areas of the country where it doesnt get so incredibly hot. Do you guys think that these other music festivals will rival bonnaroo and ticket sales will suffer for the roo cause of it? Are there any other effects all these music festivals will have on bonnaroo?

well APW isnt a camping festival so there in lies the main difference. I suggest heading over to here: so that you can see what everyone has to say about different fests. bonnaroo.proboards21.com/index.cgi?board=otherfestivals

Actually, I've heard from a solid 90% of the people I've ever met who have attended AllGood that it gives off a better festie vibe than the Roo hands down. And with the creation of Rothbury this year I feel like it's a solid question whether some Roo faithfuls will try something new.
That being said, I don't think that overall ticket sales will suffer because of these new festies. I don't think Bonnaroo will ever have a huge problem selling out tickets in time for the festival to start.

I've heard a lot of people say that they didn't dig the vibe at Lolla. It's def more of a hipster vibe than a hippie vibe. I loved it in Chicago. (Love Roo too)
So this is totally based on stereotypes (which I know we all hate ), but here's the vibe I get from everyone about festivals that are already established (I don't know about Rothbury, APW or any of the new fests).
Coachella- Good for electronic music, seeing reunited bands and seeing bands from Europe hipsters swear you should care more about.
Bonnaroo- Good for jam music, legendary guitar gods, the late night party scene and gives hippies ample reason to Ann Coulter about MTV ruining the festival. Also trying to lay claim to jazz and comedy. Plus, the ample space of the festival is just something you don't get anywhere else.
Lollapalooza- Go to the indie section at Best Buy, grab all the cds on the rack, and you get the Lollapalooza lineup. More like the Spin version of hipsterdom than the Pitchfork version (which you get earlier in the summer anyway). No camping.
Austin City Limits- Adult contemporary, music from Britain, indie music and borderline jammy acts are what you can expect from ACL. Great vibes (better than Bonnaroo imo) but pretty horrible weather conditions. The aftershows are what makes this festival special, imo. No camping.
Langerado- Bonnaroo, Jr. You won't see as many legends or as many risks taken at Langerado, but you'll get what Bonnaroo was generally considered to be about at the beginning. Lineups tend to be a bit stale (imo), but the format is great.
Sasquatch- Surprisingly solid headliners with a mixed bag undercard and notorious for weather and sound problems. But it's in the Gorge which is probably one of the two or three most pristine popular concert settings in the U.S.
Virgin- More what Lollapalooza used to be right before it busted out. You get a bunch of really popular commercial acts, mix in a few that have cred, put them in a big stadium setting, charge people out the ass for refreshments and, yes, no camping. Pretty much anytime someone accuses Bonnaroo of selling out, you need only point to Virgin as THE sell out festival. It is the festival most obsessed with having a bigger weiner than the other fests...

"I want you to notice When I'm not around You're so fücking special I wish I was special But I'm a creep I'm a weirdo What the hell am I doing here? I don't belong here" -Radiohead
“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” -Benjamin Franklin
Anyone make it to Vegoose this year?? I wanted to, but didnt have the funds...looked like fun though!! I imagine it's another one w/ a pretty unique vibe...
"We're no longer called Sonic Death Monkey. We're on the verge of becoming Kathleen Turner Overdrive, but just for tonight, we are Barry Jive and his Uptown Five. "
best festival I'v ever been to was CampBisco this past year, the people the bikers and the music was just simply amazing. I guess if u dont like the biscuits its not really a live option tho
ive been to vegoose every year (its 10 miles from home) its always fun but has a totally different vibe...theres no camping for starters and all the late nite shows are in a casino which is a TOTALLY different vibe...there are alot of locals that go to vegoose because its good bands for so cheap (a normal concert is between $60-$125 here, theyre all in casinos) so alot of people are willing to pay that for 1 band alone so at least half of the people there are there just to see the killers, rage, etc...and have never even heard of wsp or infected or any of the others...no offense but vegas is different from almost any different town...shakedown was almost nonexistant this year and the cops (not security, cops) hassled them from the start...vegas is a different vibe all the way around...i go cuz its local but if the same bands were at a festi in cali or utah or arizona even at a higher price i would go there instead because the vibe is so different here...
I've been to a bunch of the other fests and none of them create an experience like Roo, with its latenights and massive shows. It's a feeling unlike any I've had at any other fest. The only thing I can compare it to in both uniqueness and scale is the feeling I got from seeing the grateful dead and phish. It is strange to me that I am able to experience this feeling in a festival setting, when, with those 2 bands, that feeling was so particular to my reaction to the type of music being created. The music being created at Bonnaroo constantly changes, yet the feeling never does, at least for me. I've gone to other fests thinking I may experience the same sort of stimulus I got from Roo/Phish/Dead, and what I've found is that it's not there. While I always have a blast at other fests, they don't create the magic for me like Roo does, or like I got at the big phish fests. There is definitely some personal bias there, I understand that, but I can only compare things from my own frame of reference.

MY 3 festivals comparison from last year. Bonnaroo = ultimate freedom to do whatever you want festival. Just plain greatness, and lots of good music. Coachella = an amazing feeling you get when your there, with so many bands. but short sets make you miss so many bands you wanted to see. So much time is spent walking everywhere, but its interesting with lots to see. its also rigidly structured. People get the sound cut off for going over their time. Everyone has a completely different experience here. ACL - Easy to manuever layout, much more chill than Coachella as far getting up close, and great sound. the whole place was packed, and no one got searched at all. A great place for hanging out with friends. I would go to any of them again, but Coachella needs to have an incredible lineup to travel that far. Bonnaroo I would go to no matter who is playing. ACL I will go to because its close.
"We're no longer called Sonic Death Monkey. We're on the verge of becoming Kathleen Turner Overdrive, but just for tonight, we are Barry Jive and his Uptown Five. "
I had a good time at Vegoose. The vibe is WAY different than any other festival. Honestly, it was my least favorite festival out of the ones we attended. Still had a great time with some awesome bands.

I can speak for the following:
BONNAROO - Huge festival, questionable "vibe" (I'm a touch worried about losing some of the home grown flavor in 2008) but tremendous music (in my mind, the best festival organizers in the country work for Superfly as you get the most diversity of music and always high caliber acts), and a place where musicians feel free to put on their very best performances. Many more collaborations than seen at any other festival. Bonnaroo has sort of become the Oscars of festival season. Frankly, it's turned into more of music fantasy camp or a music resort over the last few years.
LOLLAPALOOZA - A city festival with a very city festival vibe. Much less "liberal" behavior, but quite a bit of drinking. The city skyline makes for a gorgeous backdrop for shows, particularly in the evening hours. This festival is fun for me since I live around Chicago and it is easy to get large numbers of my friends to turn out.
PITCHFORK - Pitchfork is not for the weak of heart. The sound on the stages is decidedly lo-fi, the sets are stodgily regimented time-wise, and the heat is ALWAYS sweltering. I've seen some great sets at this festival from lower profile bands (see Silver Jews, Destroyer, Of Montreal) and you usually can get a good idea of up and comers from this festival, but it's definitely not the best festival environment. No camping. Great food and beer though.
LANGERADO - If you're looking for vibe, Langerado is where it's at. While the festival does not boast the same caliber of acts as Bonnaroo, it is a very laid back festival experience with thus far the best weather around. It is a perfect kick off to summer and the festival season. (I'm frankly sad I can't make it back for this year's festival.)
The only other festival I've been to is Echo Project and it definitely had a Bonnaroo type vibe to it - just on a much smaller scale. It wasn't very crowded, you could get up close for any show you wanted, and of course there was camping - which, for me, is an absolute must for any fest I attend. It just didn't have the epic feel of Bonnaroo, though.
Lots has been said that I agree with, I'm just adding a few tidbits.
BONNAROO: Huge. Tons to to. Pick a direction to walk in and you'll find something to amuse you. Expect to be running around from stage to stage a LOT to catch all the music you want to see. Weather is not for the weak.
ALLGOOD: Vibe is incredible. You'll find you have a lot more time to wander at this fest... Much fun, great weather, great people.
ECHO: A mini roo with a great vibe. Not insano-crowded.
Smaller fests: Expect an absolutely glorious vibe. Thats the best thing about the small fests! Go to a smaller festie once a summer if you can.
I think I prefer a less 'epic' vibe lately and a more laid back one, although, epic is never a bad thing
I can understand that. It was really relaxing and laid back at Echo and it was a lot of fun. Year in and year out I'm amazed and delighted by the size and scope and the "epic-ness" of Bonnaroo. I'd be bummed if I didn't get that feeling at least one weekend out of the year.
