I don't like Tool anywhere near as much as I did 6 or 7 years ago... I pretty much stopped listening to them, it's still definitely good for the most part, but what I used to get out of Tool's music, I get elsewhere now.
Same. Their music lost it's balls after Ænima and the concentration of mouth-breathing retards in their fanbase increased 10 fold around then too. I like Lateralus, but the best part of those shows for me was The Melvins opening for them. I haven't seen Tool in 10 years, but I am ready to see them again.
I don't think he's ready for BTBAM yet. on second thought, no one is...the first time they hear it. Colors is one of the greatest albums made in the last decade.
No. Wrong. Their lead singer plays the keyboards standing up like he's in some sh*tty proto-Goth band. Their fans are former emo teenagers.
I saw a bill a couple years ago with Valient Thorr -> Baroness -> BTBAM -> Mastodon, and every single band there destroyed BTBAM. It was a sham that Baroness opened for them.
Actually, he plays keyboards because his idol is this guy.
I usually see eye to eye with you on the metal, but we're far apart on this one.

Are you trolling me? What are you disagreeing with? My statement about Colors was an opinion and I couldn't give any less fawks if you don't agree with it. Now, I will admit that many of their fans are of that young metalcorebullshitaudience because they played with many of those bands in their earlier days, but if you were not impressed with them live, you were not paying attention. Who gives a shit if the singer plays keys standing up? His main instrument is his gotdamn vocal chords anyway, amirite? I've seen them three times now and have been blown away all thee times. They completely won the whole crowd watching them at FFF7 a few months ago (had to have been 5000+ people watching them). When I saw them finally headlined a tour with Animals as Leaders back in 2011 was when I really knew how great they were live because instead of a 3 or 4 song set, they played like 9 songs (2 hours +). We were all blown theFuckaway. And the fans at that show were not a bunch of "former emo teenagers" as far as I could tell. It was mostly a bunch of nerds that wanted to watch Paul Waggoner and Blake Richardson do their thing.
BTBAM is terrible Hot Topic emo teenage metal and you should all be ashamed for liking them. Even their name just screams "WE CAME UP WITH THIS IDEA WHILE WEARING ALL BLACK AND SMOKING CIGARETTES OUTSIDE THE EMPLOYEE'S ENTRANCE TO CINNABONS."
fuckingChrist. Normally, when Juggs vomits out strong opinions about bands there's a bit more knowledge in his back burner, but he has clearly made early judgement on BTBAM based on some very fragile assumptions. How about we change the subject and let whoever may be interested in them form their own opinions based on listening to their work. I'd recommend starting off with their cover album The Anatomy Of just to get an idea of how versatile they are, then listen to Colors. If you like those, check out the rest of their albums (The new one rules, as Dave stated earlier).
As far as other "newer" metal bands that are really great live, George, I would recommend checking out Red Fang and Black Tusk.
I'm digging "Sky Burial" so far. Only given it one listen, but I'm liking what I heard. Most albums take a while to really grow on me, so excited to listen to it some more.
Anyone on here into Rwake or Agalloch? Most of the others on my list I've seen others talk about, but haven't really seen anyone else mention these two yet.
Rwake (pronounced "wake") are a sludgy Southern metal band. Of course they're much more then that, but that's probably the most accurate description for them. If you haven't listened to their newest album "Rest", check it out, one of my favorite releases from 2011. Probably my favorite song off that one is "The Invisible Thread", but it's hard to pick. Another good intro to Rwake is probably "Dying Spiral Galaxies" off of their 2004 album "If You Walk Before You Crawl, You Crawl Before You Die", I think that was the first song I heard from Rwake.
Agalloch are more black metal with some folk influences thrown in there. The first song I heard from Agalloch that drew me in was "In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion", off their 2002 album "The Mantle".
Another good one from them is "The Watcher's Monolith" off their newest album "Marrow of the Spirit".
I finally saw Rwake open for Neurosis in Atlanta back in December. They were excellent! (The other band that Bill from Mastodon is in, Primate, also opened and they were MEEEHHHHH)
I kinda dig Agalloch, but I haven't seen them live yet.
Unfortunately I've never seen Rwake or Agalloch I was supposed to see Rwake open up for Neurosis in Austin a few months ago, but work came up and I couldn't go. Still kicking myself for that one, that's a killer bill right there. With Rwake being based out of Arkansas, you'd think I'd have seen them by now, but for some reason the stars have never aligned for me. I've only seen Neurosis once, when they played Fun Fun Fun Fest a while ago.
Doesn't seem like Agalloch tours the South much (or I've just been unaware of their shows), most of their tours seem to be based around their homes in the Pacific NW.
Forgot to add, Rwake will be releasing their first live film sometime soon. It was shot at Maryland Deathfest X, and is called "A Stone, A Leaf, An Unfound Door: Rwake Live at Maryland Deathfest X". I haven't come across an actual release date, but I'd assume it's sometime soon since they'll be airing it at Roadburn April 18-20th. Here's the teaser for it:

The only way you could really go wrong is by having those Blaze Bayley records anywhere besides 14 & 15.
It's probably "technically" a better album - but Piece of Mind and Powerslave were my go-to combo and five years later when Seventh Son came out I was DJing and into the late 80s electronic scene for a while.

You're missing World Painted Blood, I'd probably put that one between your 6 and 7. I might switch your 5 and 6 too, but it's been a while since I heard Haunting.
I have to agree with Zapp. Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son is my go to.
It's a hard choice for me. Front to back, I think Seventh Son is the more consistently good album but the best songs on Powerslave (Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Powerslave, 2 Minutes to Midnight) are better than the best songs on Seventh Son (The Evil That Men Do, Infinite Dreams, The Clairvoyant).
In high school, I played both a lot, but probably Seventh Son a little more. Now, I rarely touch a Maiden studio album. They're a band whose live energy translates well to live albums and they have a buttload of them so I tend to stick with "Live After Death", "En Vivo" or "Flight 666."
Self titled track on seventh son was pretty amazing live in ATL last year. The last couple of minutes was particularly epic. Never thought I would get to hear that track live.
