I'm gonna say that I'm intrigued, to say the least. Drew Daniel of Matmos has another project called Soft Pink Truth. The upcoming record is a covers album that features new renditions from classics like Venom and Darkthrone.

I listened to one track. It was ok, but I'm not sure the new approach suits them very well. I'll give the full album a spin in the next few days and report back.
Also the best metal album of the year is still Behemoth. Mastodon's album is probably better overall as an album but Behemoth is the best metal album, if that makes sense. Kind of like how Pusha T released the best rap album of the year last year, even though Kanye released a better album.
Because he's probably right, and also who really cares?
Funny enough the dude on the cover of that Merciful Fate album actually kinda looks like he has panda face paint on. [Word filter humor.]
I can agree with that except he used to tout black metal on Estatic Peace and took more than a few bands on tour. Never mind the fact that he was all excited to play in Twilight (before that folded). It just kinda feels like he wanted to be controversial more so than some new found hatred for metal.

I don't see the concepts as mutually exclusive, nor did I take his comments as expressing hatred for metal.
I like Death Cab for Cutie (well, everything up to and including Plans). I will also state emphatically that Ben Gibbard is probably a huge pussy. See?

Wasn't it a joke? Because he's making another death metal influenced album? Wasn't he calling himself a pussy?

That makes more sense. I've never taken him to be a jokster, but I get your point. You're probably right.
The Behemoth/Cannibal Corpse show tomorrow night is sold out. Aeon and Tribulation are opening. Caught Tribulation open for Watain a little over a year ago, enjoyed them.
Should be a great show, been needing a metal show in my life.

Maybe not "metal" in the truest sense of the word, but has anybody given Marilyn Manson's new record, "The Pale Emperor" a listen? At work right now and about half way through it, its pretty good. Actually one track, "Deep Six", is fantastic. Its a straight powerhouse industrial/metal song with an awesome guitar tone.
I haven't really kept up with Manson's output over the past ten years or so but I'm enjoying this. Definite Antichrist Superstar feel, but a bit grungier and earthier, more grounded in an LA metal sort of way.
Behemoth kicked some ass the other night, will definitely see them whenever I get a chance.
Of the two openers, only really cared for Tribulation. Aeon was too straight of death metal for me. Same with Cannibal Corpse. I just can't get into that old school death metal. Where all you can hear are the cookie monster vocals, and the insanely fast blast beats from the drums. It's ridiculously technical and difficult, but just not what I enjoy listening to. I need to have a little groove in my metal.
That is where Tribulation and Behemoth excelled for me.
Behemoth absolutely commanded the stage, glad I got the chance to see them.

Might need to check that out just for nostalgia sake. Definitely enjoyed some Manson in years gone by.
The Behemoth show was the first metal show I've gone to since I cut my hair (used to be past shoulders). It was weird not being able to headbang properly.
