Shortly after I posted this, I found out Thee Oh Sees turned down an offer to play the festival. Sorry I didn't say something sooner. I just didn't have the heart to tell everybody, but I guess you all should know.
I like knowing this actually. It just shows how good the SK bookers taste in music is. Hopefully Music Midtown see's this fest as a threat and decides to step up their game.
Yes, it is indeed a good sign about SK booking. I was thrilled to find out he, Tim Sweetwood, was going after Thee Oh Sees. To be honest, I was hardly interested in the first year's lineup and, even though I wanted to go the second year because of a few acts, I wasn't able to attend for other reasons. I did see some excellent shows during the late nights both years, though. In my opinion, 2015 is huge step forward. However, it is still not exactly fresh, exciting, and diverse as some of the other fests around the country, such as FYF, FFF, Pitchfork, and, in many aspects, Coachella. SK is very indebted, either directly or influenced by, semi-mainstream rock music of the last couple decades. In my eyes, Tim Sweetwood is not the biggest record collecting nerd in the world, but he is excited and passionate about music, has his heart in the right place, and has big ambition. That being said, there many, undeniably great acts on the lineup that I am more than happy to see play a festival in Atlanta.
Do I think Music Midtown will make any changes to their approach because of Shaky Knees? Shit no. I have zero faith in that scumbag, Peter Conlon, who runs Music Midtown. I have read and seen enough interviews with that piece of shit to know that he has no interest in the quality of music he puts together on his lineup and is only interested in doing whatever it takes to make the most profit. I have no problem with somebody wanting to make money, but I do care about somebody who shits on an art that I care deeply about to put together an extremely poorly run festival that targets the "I listen to everything" music non-fan that inevitably makes Atlanta look like the Hits FM Radio of the music world. I've posted this before on this board, but I am leave it here again anyway:
"People who pretend to be musicians who really aren't — especially local musicians. ... If you're working in a bar, and you're a bartender but you play in a band, you're a bartender. It's how you make your living. If you're making your living as a musician full time, you're a musician. This is a business of talent. People in this business seek talent out. If you're talented, someone's gonna find you and you're gonna get discovered. If you're still flailing around and you're in your late 20s or 40s, you probably don't have any talent and you should really look at plan B. A lot of people come to me and they're still waiting to get discovered, but look, it's hard to hide talent. In our business, people will find you and make you a star. When people claim to be musicians but they're working as bartenders or waiters, it's just not the same thing. It takes away from the people who really do have talent."

That pissed me off so much because I know the type of people he's describing and music does so much for them. Just bc they don't make that much from it they aren't musicians? Ridiculous. I've played shows with people who have more talent than some of the shit acts he booked at MM.
That being said I don't think MM sold out last year like it did the past few years. I'm hoping he actually wants to book a respectable line up this year because of that. My dream would be Kanye-Radiohead but I doubt he counts them as real musicians.
I have no idea. But there was talk between them and Bonnaroo that didn't end up with an agreement, either. I'm trying to decided if this is a pattern.
Dwyer does seem like a guy who could easily be super weird about booking.
Totally agree. I'm sure he has a built in Square Detector that guides him on how to approach things. It's either "freak them out" or "fuck The Man's contracts."
2024 Lineup: 4/10 - HFTRR @ Larimer Lounge 6/1 - JRAD @ Red Rocks 7/18 - Dr. Dog @ Red Rocks 7/26-7/28 - Newport Folk Festival 9/19-9/22 - Bourbon & Beyond Festival
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Shaky Knees would be a dream for me. It's like the lineups are made for me. One of these days!
DO IT!!!
Honestly it cooooould be in the cards for me... I am selling my Coachella ticket and there's a chance I might not be able to do Mountain Jam (possible work conflict that weekend). In a few weeks, I will know for sure about MJ. If I can get a most of my money back on the MJ ticket, I will have more than a thousand dollars back in the bank and a week plus of vacation days to use.. That definitely would put another spring/ summer festival on the table!

Their lineup is solid from top to bottom. Great mix of music. And the week after my birthday! All about the Bears; Panda Bear and Minus the Bear(even though their drummer ditched).

I keep forgetting Black Lips and Machester Orchestra since they don't compare to the other artists for me but they're still gonna be great sets.
Anywho, has anyone gone to Central Park since it was announced SK was gonna hold it there? If so, how big does it look?/how many stages could there be?/etc.
That "some new venue" place (The Mammal Gallery) is pretty rad. It's a decent sized room (slightly smaller than The Masquerade IIRC, but cooler), sounds good, and has a great atmosphere. There's also a small art gallery/chill area on the top level. I saw the Pizza Underground there last year... the venue was giving out free pizza & the art gallery was pizza themed.
The parking situation isn't the greatest (take Marta), but I would definitely recommend the venue! Lightning Bolt would be a great show to see there (and I'm not even a huge fan).

For sure. I can't think of a better Atlanta venue for this show.

Yeah, I love the Mammal Gallery, too. Saw Cat Power (solo) there one night, and looking forward to King Khan & BBQ in March. They'll tear that place up! You gotta love that Atlanta can support so many venues.
