PHISH, SUNDAY 10/31/2021 MGM GRAND GARDEN ARENA Las Vegas, NV
SET 1: Buried Alive, Roses Are Free > Ghost, Wolfman's Brother, Kill Devil Falls > Free, David Bowie
SET 2: Knuckle Bone Broth Avenue, Get More Down, Egg in a Hole, Thanksgiving, Clear Your Mind > The 9th Cube, The Inner Reaches of Outer, Don't Doubt Me, The Unwinding, Something Living Here, The Howling, I Am in Miami
SET 3: Carini > Lonely Trip, Soul Planet > Death Don't Hurt Very Long > Twist, Drift While You're Sleeping
ENCORE: Harry Hood
For the second set, the band's "musical costume" was all debuted originals, performed as the invented band Sci-Fi Soldier (a 14-page comic book distributed upon entry detailed the group's adventure to save the planet). For that set, the band performed in elaborate costumes (helmets and all), with alternate instruments, each playing within a flashing/glowing shape (two circles and two squares), after descending (in the form of holograms) from the ceiling in cylinders of colored light. Knuckle Bone Broth Avenue included extended choreography by Trey and Mike. During Get More Down, matching upright geometric shapes danced around behind the band, reducing to the two circles overlapped by Egg in a Hole, which featured pyrotechnics. Before Clear Your Mind, Trey introduced the band as from the year 4680 (the total of the October 28, 2021 songs as noted during that night's encore-ending Grind). During The 9th Cube, there were projections of donuts and turtles on a cube above the band. Fireworks rained down on the stage during The Inner Reaches of Outer. For I Am in Miami, Trey switched to an acoustic guitar and the band stood together at stage front with the four-mic a cappella setup. After the set, the band departed as holograms back up the colored tubes. The start of Harry Hood included alternate lyrics (Holy Blankenstein). Soul Planet contained Knuckle Bone Broth Avenue and Don't Doubt Me quotes.
for set 2 i've only listened through "Clear Your Mind". So far the overall tone isn't too dissimilar from Kasvot Vaxt, which itself had kind of a sci-fi feel. Given the success of that set I can see why they went with a similar theme.
once the comic book was distributed, some fans expressed disappointment that it wasn't a cover set, but instead another set of original tunes. I'm generally pro another set of original tunes, so long as the band places some sort of thematic restrictions on themselves, i.e. by making up a fake band to "cover". Phish just playing "Fuego", then known as "Wingsuit", was disappointing. Even though Fuego is a good album and has good songs, it was still just a set of new Phish originals that I imagine wasn't particularly exciting to hear live at Halloween for the first time. But then you had "Chilling Thrilling", which while ostensibly a "cover" of a sound effects album is basically all new Phish originals but with that thematic restriction, and same with Kasvot Vaxt.
I think these sets have been more exciting then the true 3.0 cover sets.

I'm kind of torn. On the one hand, when I think about it the only real Halloween cover set that I view with any sort of true affection is Remain In Light, which I think is easily the best one they ever did. However, I'm just not a huge fan of Phish's latter-day songwriting, so the idea of an entire new set of Phish tunes every year doesn't really get my motor running. (Though KV did have a couple gems.) Regardless, I'm going to give this one a listen today.
Are you doing the whole NYE run? Or just NYE itself?

i'm just doing the 31st and 1st right now, but the 30th is possible.
after listening to more of the set, i think the Kasvot Vaxt set was better. but that could be because i'm used to the Kasvot Vaxt songs now. i wanted to listen before i read fan reviews, just spent a few minutes over at r/phish and it seems like opinions are split, maybe leaning towards people not liking the set/not liking the choice to not cover an album. if i was there i definitely think it would be more immediately fun to hear an album i already knew.
agree on Remain in Light, easily the best Halloween set, and I think the Halloween set that had the most impact on their sound moving forward. and it gave us Crosseyed and Painless as a regular cover.

not defending set 2 last night, i still don't know how i feel other than it didn't grip me immediately like Kasvot Vaxt did, but i think it's hilarious that lots of fans are criticizing the new music for the dumb/silly lyrics.

"i love meatballs so you better get ready"
For me personally it isn't that the lyrics are silly, its that the lyrics are an awful lot of "cross talk" or them singing different parts over each other that is very distracting in some of the songs i liked the best -- clear your mind, dont doubt me

a friend of mine is a jaded vet. he's seen phish a bunch, he's hit every show so far this year. when he says a show is good, it's good. when he says a show is bad, well it might still actually be good for me. but i respect his opinion, and like to hear his opinion as a check against my own. his thoughts on halloween:
"that show sucked. 100 degrees in the venue, cigarette smoke so thick you could cut it with a knife, no dancing room, and all new songs that will be disappointing set fillers/piss breaks for years to come. i've had more fun at the dentist office without nitrous."
sounds like conditions at the venue affected his opinion, but clearly he's also not impressed with the new songs. also probably exhausted from being 40ish and travelling to like 35 phish shows this year.
3post1jack1 I just read you are coming up for NYE officially - meet for a preshow slice?
if i make it up there absolutely. i'm still waffling about the cost, primarily plane tickets which are outrageous right now. if/when i purchase plane tickets i'll let you know.
and by festival I do not mean Roo, Lock'n, Peach or the like
so say we all.
there is also bonnaroo talk but i think it's because people think the hotdog clue means phish, because people who post on PT don't know about other bands i guess.

would be sweet to be a rockstar and play a bunch of shows down the street from your apartment. sleep in your own bed every night and make tons of cash.
Bing bong. No official word yet but looks like it’s coming soon
not saying it's not cancelled, but that memo or whatever that is feels like bullshit to me. having said that zzyzx said jeff isn't the type who would make stuff up, but its also possible he could have been fooled by someone? i don't know what to believe, and i honestly don't care either way, i just want to know if it's happening one way or the other so i can cancel my hotel/plane ticket.

Yeah people seem pretty accepting that this is real so maybe it isn’t? I would like to have a definitive answer just because it would be nice. I don’t have to worry about traveling, I’m sure the limbo is very frustrating.

everything i have is cancellable into next week so i'm objectively fine, i just want to have some certainty about my plans next week.
theoretically, i could get excited about april shows in NYC. i don't think phish has played a show on 4/20 since 1994. good time for work for me too.
With the Omicron variant of Covid-19 surging in New York City, we have made the very difficult decision to reschedule next week’s run of shows at Madison Square Garden.
The health and safety of Phish fans, our crew, and venue staff is paramount in our minds. While Phish has played shows this year as the pandemic has continued, this variant’s ability for rapid transmission is unprecedented.
We are also mindful that a significant number of people travel for these shows and then return to their communities, and we want to avoid accelerating transmission of the virus. Finally, even with the strictest of tour Covid protocols, the prolonged exposure of a four-night indoor run (plus the days of preparation and travel) to critical crew and staff considerably increases the possibility of having to shut the shows down once they’ve started.
We’re fortunate to have found a four-night window in The Garden’s schedule, and the shows will now take place April 20-23, 2022, including a three-set show (as originally planned for New Year’s Eve) on April 22.
Ticket holders can request a refund anytime over the next 30 days, beginning today, if they cannot commit to the rescheduled show date. If a refund is not requested during the allotted time, tickets will be valid for the new show date. Please note: If you purchased from an authorized ticket sales channel (Ticketmaster, Phish Tickets, CID or venue website) these ticketing partners will be contacting all buyers shortly with further instructions.
