I wanted to start a thread about this music venue. I feel like it may be relevant to the board because of its proximity to the Bonnaroo festival site and many of the shows that come through are promoted by AC Ent. as well.
In the history of Chattanooga, we have had dismal music venue choices. We have also had dismal music fans. This is why no one ever put us on their map when it came time to choose the routes of their tours (they actually probably came through seeing as we were in between Atl./Nash./Knox./Bham./Asheville/etc. - but they obviously chose to keep driving - for good reasons). Aside from a few Panic shows sprinkled through our history we really had nothing but Riverbend... yes, that pizza stained Riverbend. With such headlining acts as - God, just google the shame.
But now, now we have this new place called Track 29. Its basically a hollowed out rail shed that was abandoned by the Choo Choo a long time ago. Creature comforts, personality and acoustics were not its strong suits. However, it is a pretty large building and has a relatively low capacity so it always feels like theres tons of room to dance or chill out if one has to. The stage is on rails and they can move in fore/aft according to the amount of patrons expected. This way even when you go to a small show it still feels intimate without feeling empty. They have done some work with sound baffling which has helped the acoustics quite a bit and though a few shows had some light setups that were a bit overpowering for the size of the place, when it is well (tastefully) lit you are no longer distracted by the industrial aesthetic.
Dont forget the shows! They have been booking bigger and bigger acts as of late which really goes to show that they are following a sustainable model and generally sells out almost every weekend show of any caliber. In the past month they have schedule Bassnectar in the last slot of his small venue/back to roots terr and The Flaming Lips coming off the end of their tour with the Black Keys. Keep in mind this is still a 1700 cap. warehouse in "the scenic city" of Tennessee.
Anyways, let me know if you love/hate this place or any experiences you'd like to share. As long as they keep booking 'em Ill keep buying 'em so find me down there!
I've been Ghostland and Galatic there. I think the security is ridiculous, but besides that like the venue OK. I'll be at the Flaming Lips show.
It's better than being roofied at Rhythm and Brews.
Ha ha yes. I personally avoided R&B my whole life until this year. T29 definitely needs to make some strides regarding security. I've personally never had a problem but I have heard of some instances 2nd and 3rd hand. Care to share your experience?.
I wish I had gone to the Ghostland show as we got gipped at EFF last year with a dj set. Flips should be a fun show (I don't expect anything but their typical shtick, but hey - it beats Three Days Grace - or whatever the facebook kids are always asking for).
The bar could also use some better servers as well. I'm not a spun wook, I tip well, I need some rum with my coke and ice please. At least they are cheap.
But I cannot understate how nice it is to go to a show and not feel suffocated by a dense crowd - I hope they don't change the capacity on this place, it is so nice to be able to move around.

Ah, I've been to Rhythm and Brew a couple time for the Mummies and once for Cage the Elephant. Roofien' happened at a Mummies show. Anyway.
Track 29 does the whole pocket/purse checking stuff that a lot of venues don't. I make a point to only have my car key, ticket, ID and cash when I go there. I believe they check ticket/ID twice, too.. it's been a while but I know there was a lot of poop when they opened. They completely turned off comment ability to their FB page for a while due to all the negative comments. I've had security get onto me for trying to stay after a show for a set list as well.

Ha ha, I would have said it anyway I'm sure. That sucks as far as the security personel goes and that they can be dicks when it was not warranted in your case. I'm usually friendly at the entrance so I have yet to be searched but I imagine they are under a bit of a microscope from city officials who oppose having a music venue of any sort where colorful people can congregate and they have to use their security proactively to prevent any incidents. To them it's probably just another Club Fathom. I don't agree with this approach and I don't want to feel like I am doing something I can get in trouble for when I'm trying to enjoy myself.
They have a lot of metal and country shows there too so I'm sure some nights can get out of hand and maybe they just assume all music fans act that way.
R&B is depressing and I don't look forward to the shows there very much. I like the balcony - but it's kind of a dump and it sounds even worse.

I saw M. Ward and Dawes at Track 29, and honestly I just am not impressed with the space (ha, or security!). Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled to have a venue in town that can pull Sufjan and them Flamin' lips, but I feel like as a venue they need to not take themselves so seriously. People should want to be go there (since we're talking local: think of dive places you WANT to go to, like JJ's Bohemia), not consider whether or not to skip an artist because of location.
Maybe not a constructive comment, but my two cents.

That's plenty constructive actually. I have been down to JJ's a few times and I really like the place, but I have yet to see anyone perform out back (do they do that?). And they serve Sir Perry for a decent price - so I can actually drink if I want to.
There's not much to improve within the space unfortunately - aesthetically displeasing would be putting it mildly. And though the security is faulty (no argument there), that is something they can learn to improve.
I know some people who work there, and while I wouldn't exactly call them friends, they know that the security sucks and they want that situation to improve as well and hopefully it will when some of the 'heat' dies down from being such a new place.
I do get excited when a band announces that they'll be playing there, but you're right, its more about them playing locally than going to this venue.
I've been to a couple of shows at Track 29 and enjoyed them both once I was inside, but yes, the ticket pick-up process was ridiculous and the security, while polite, was the normal annoying stop-and-frisk. Also, there's a heavy police presence outside the shows. I can understand that for some artists, but when you've booked Sufjan Steven's Xmas show, do you really need to field law enforcement as if you're expecting a Cannibal Corpse crowd? (Insert many jokes here.)
On the aesthetics: Track 29 was most recently an ice skating rink, I believe.
The best part about the place is the bookings. Oh, and the fact that the Terminal Brewhouse is just around the corner.

Ice skating rink? Is it too lame to say thats kinda 'cool'? I didn't know that, but it definitely makes sense. It also kind of explains the VIP boxes upstairs - sort of. I used to love the beers at the Terminal - Goofballs 1.0 was out of sight, 2.0 not so much. But I have not been back since my celiacs diagnosis.
It also seems I really missed out on the Sufjan show huh?
Yeah, when I was in my early teens we used to go ice skating down there with our church group. I got a lot of adolescent smooching done in the dark corners of that rink. My first-ever french kiss, if I remember correctly. So I have fond memories of the place.

I have quite the affinity for that as a matter of fact, nothing beats a warm collapsible flask of wine in an even warmer former ice-skating rink. I will make sure to keep an eye out for security from now on too.
I wish my first frenching memories were that good... She smoked cigarrettes.
If you just joined inforoo in February of this year, how do you even know who I am talking about?
You're obv holls.
Ha ha, I know who she is because I've been reading the boards for a long time now (I didn't know about it until probably 2010). I had an account with the name 'cheek' that seems to have an unresolvable problem and I hadn't been able to log into it for like 6 or 7 months and I only had like 13 posts in it anyhow so I didn't mind losing it. I liked the new board format so much I wanted to come out of the shadows again. But until you see us both in the same place at the same time I guess you'll just have to wonder...
We are going to see Flips there for our first T29 show, so we'll see! Definitely encouraged by their ability to bring some real music to Chatt on a regular basis!
