I think Lovie got fired in part because it just feels like that team has maxed out. You're starting to see some turnover in the defense and Cutler has consistently only gotten so far.
Not saying I agree with all of that, and I personally would not have canned him, I just think that's the perception.
Agreed. I think the difference between the Bears and Jets is expectations. The Bears were expected to do pretty well last year and to not make the playoffs was kind of the nail in the coffin. The Jets, on the other hand, were expected to suck. Also, that was Lovie's 9th season whereas Rex is just going into his 6th.
I think it's inevitable. He's already neck-and-neck with Sanchez and has been in an NFL offense for about 10 seconds. He has a better arm, handles the pressure better, has that threat to run and seems to have a good connection with last year's 2nd rounder (Stephen Hill), which is nice since Sanchez went out of his way to not throw Hill good passes last year.
I like the boxing style of scoring this competition (it's a mechanism a lot of the beat writers are using). In that sense, with 4 days of practice it's 39-38 Geno (Geno won 2 days, Mark won 1, they were pretty even the other day).
why does everyone think every black qb can run? geno doesn't want to run, he only does when he has to.

I don't think flanzo was trying to say he wanted to run. He just said there is a threat to run there as Smith is much more mobile than Sanchez.

I'm not talking about "every black QB," I'm talking about Geno Smith, who took a read option 50 yards for a TD against the starting Jets defense two days ago.
They'll use it just enough for teams to respect it. They're not turning him into a running QB, they're using his physical gifts to open the offense up to more dynamic passing plays.

just saying he didn't do that much in college. I wouldn't be expecting it.

They're running Geno in read-option plays every practice, so that's what I'm basing my expectations on. What are you basing yours on? The Jets intend to use Geno the same way Russell Wilson is used in Seattle. Wilson was never a running QB, but is athletic enough to use the read option to victimize defense.

he's not Russell Wilson. let them try it though.
I don't know. Their 40 times are pretty comparable (4.53 v. 4.56)
The only thing Jets fans can look forward to is the race for Clowney. They could win that for sure this year
I wish the Panthers would suck it up enough this year to get Clowney. I think they're better than that though, still not a playoff team but not on the bottom either.

Sang's an idiot.
Geno is bigger (6'2" 220 pounds vs. 5'11" 205 pounds), has nearly identical speed (highlighted by Dave already), has a better broad jump (10'4" vs. 9'10"), a nearly identical vertical (33.5" vs. 34") and their senior years were equally impressive (71.2% completion, 4,205 yards, 42/6 TD/INT rate for Geno vs. 72.8% completion, 3,175 yards and 33/4 TD/INT ratio). Many teams had Wilson high on their boards, but let him slip (size concerns). Many teams had Geno high on their boards, but let him slip (offensive scheme concerns). Both have great arms, both are mobile, both are intellectual QBs who would prefer to sit in the pocket, but don't shy away from using their athleticism to make plays.
But yeah, there's nothing you could possibly compare about the two.

Who could be in the race for Johnny Football, assuming he has another superb year and enters the draft next season? Cleveland, Jacksonville, Buffalo, Kansas City, Miami?

He might be a top-5 QB next year. It will be hilarious if a crappy team wastes a top-5 pick on an undersized run-first QB with substance abuse issues, though. I'm thinking the Raiders won't be able to contain themselves, so my money's on them.

Raiders seem to be making better draft choices now that Davis is gone and they just signed Matt Flynn. We will see if Flynn can live up to the expectations that garnered him a big money contract.

Miami has Tannehill, Buffalo has Manuel. They're much more tied to those QBs than the Raiders are to Flynn.

If neither of those two have a good season I could see their teams picking up another QB like Carolina did with Cam. It's all speculation at this point.

In the tradition of Suck for Luck, this year shall be called "clownin' for Clowney"
I understand people's need to pick a consensus #1 every year, but I don't see Clowney going first overall. If I had to guess I'd go with Teddy Bridgewater right now.

As always, I think it depends on what team ends up #1 and how this season goes. Speaking of Geno Smith, don't forget that he was a much hotter ticket before the 2012 season than after.
I don't know. Not to take anything away from Bridgewater, but Clowney is a freak of nature, and considered a transcendent prospect. There is still a full season of college football left for him to play, and you never know what could happen, but as of today he seems to be the favorite to go #1.

Teams that I think have a realistic shot at the #1 overall pick: Billdos, Browns, Raiders, Jags, Eagles, Titans, possibly Chargers or Cards. And then there are teams that could plummet with a single key injury (Broncos/Peyton, Vikings/Peterson and so on).
Excluding the teams that are one devastating injury away, most of the teams are without a young franchise-level QB. The Billdos don't have a full 12 months to evaluate their current rooke QB, so I can't see them re-upping at the same position in the first round two years in a row (and if you do that you effectively destroy Manuel's trade value by admitting he's not the guy). If the Chargers are picking in the top-5 it means Rivers had another nightmare and they'll be looking to move on. All of those other teams aren't locked into franchise QBs at all (Weeden, Flynn, the Jags' dumpster fire, Foles, Locker, Rivers/Palmer are nottttt exactly long-term solutions).
The only team I see putting a premium on a defensive player over QB out of the above teams is Buffalo, maybe the Titans/Eagles if Locker/Foles have tremendous seasons (and Foles might not even start). In a Qb-driven league I think teams will jump at the top guys in this draft, who are supposed to be better than the Luck/RGIII group when all is said and done (or at least on the same level).

It would take an amazing year from Teddy Bridgewater to supplant Clowney for the #1 overall pick. Clowney is a freak. One of the best defensive prospects to enter the draft in quite a while. Teddy is the only one who could pull it off though. Johnny Football is going to be a laughing stock in the next few years. He gives off such a Ryan Leaf vibe that it's sickening. It really depends on the team though. There are so many average/bad AFC teams that are 1 injury away from losing all of their games.

I would also point out that Kansas City, Oakland and Jacksonville represent 3 out of the bottom 4 teams in sacks for the 2012. QB is not the only place they can stand to improve.

All Bridgewater has to do is play at an elite level for the entire year. His natural progression will improve his 27/8 TD/Int ratio and his accuracy should also go up. Clowney isn't the first "oh my god" physical specimen and he won't be the last, it's going to take a team with absolutely zero need for a QB to land the overall #1 pick, or for a team to trade up. I'm fairly confident Clowney goes 2nd or 3rd.

Of course not, but it's easier to find a pass rush than an elite QB.
It does not matter what the Jets do. They are a 4 win team this year and I do not see anything changing that
Just curious, what are you basing this expert opinion on?
You don't need to be an expert to look at the Jets roster and know they are going to be bad. Could they come out and surprise some people this year? Maybe, but that maybe is a gigantic maybe. Their QB situation is awful. They have no WR worth mentioning. No running game. What used to be a stellar defense is now below average. The Jets are just not good. I know it is hard to except that as a fan. Believe me, I am Panthers fan. I know all about it. The sooner you except y'all are going to suck the less pain you will be in during the season

Ugh. You do need to be an expert to realistically call out a team using anything other than last year's W/L total. The Jets spent a lot of time and effort to improve the talent across the board, so to act like they're walking into 2013 with the same team they ended 2012 with isn't fair. The team that ended 2012, mind you, won 6 games with one of the ten worst QB seasons since the AFL/NFL Merger. By that I mean, the team won 6 games in spite of the Qb position. The team will not have a repeat there, either Sanchez improves or he's replaced with Geno. I think Geno's starting games before Week 6, fwiw.
And just because you don't know who Jeremy Kerley is doesn't mean he's not worth mentioning. They also have Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow, Stephen Hill, Zach Rogers (what upppp Tennessee) and some other guys who I won't mention (yet) who are having fantastic camps. Just because you don't know all of them doesn't mean they're bad.
Let's mark today as the day you called out Christopher "Tusk" Ivory as being "no" runningback.
The defense has never been below average in the past four seasons. Since Rex came to NY he's never put a unit out there that finished worse than 8th.

I know who Jeremy Kerley is and he is not a legit #1 WR. Chris Ivory has never had a really good season. I know he was in a pass 1st offense in NO, but he is nothing special. He has had some good games but even when players went down and his number was called he could not perform on a consistent basis. The Jets could have the worst offense in the league and that defense is not holding teams to 14 points a game like it used to. They are just not good. Sorry man

I will say that the Jets could win maybe 6 games, but that is bc they play in one of the worst divisions in the NFL. The AFC also is horrible as well. So that is working for you
