Since so many of our lovely Inforoosters are likely to have a broader knowledge of the bands playing than the influx of new users that are likely to come onto the message board, I thought it would be a good idea for us to have a thread where we could give personalized recommendations. I think the hardcore Rooers are also more likely to research the Cafe Acts that the average fest-goer won't check out, so it'd be a good idea for us to share some knowledge about the lesser-known bands. Obviously people can also check out the Lineup By Genre Thread, but I think this thread could help for some more...interesting recommendations that aren't strictly based on genre (I also think it would be a shame if people missed out on an awesome Cafe Act because they didn't feel like doing some homework first). For example, if someone says they like Swans and Nas, they would probably take a liking to Death Grips.
I'll start. I'm really digging Tame Impala and Walk the Moon right now, as well as Boys Noize's new stuff. Who else might I like?

If you like Boys Noize you will like Wolfgang Gartner...if you like Tame Impala you will like Portugal. The Man.......I'm super into Lord Huron lately, I love Local Natives too and I've noticed they are pretty similar.

For the two people that haven't heard them before, Mumford and Sons sounds a lot like the Avett Brothers. Father John Misty reminds me of Iron and Wine.
Killer Mike and Big K.R.I.T are both southern rap...Killer Mike is from Atlanta and does alot with Outkast/Goodie Mob/Dungeon Family...Big KRIT reminds me more of Memphis-style rap, like 8-Ball and MJG...he actually has a good song called 'Lighters' with 8-Ball and MJG...Kendrick Lamar will by far be the best rapper there though...
It's also the brown hair and the subpop too, don't forget those!
Seriously though, FJM reminds me of Iron and Wine when he did his Shepherd's Dog album. They're certainly close enough vocally to draw comparisons, from just the sound of the voice to some of the falsetto melodies. FJM does have a much more noticeable edge to some of his instrumentations, particularly in the drums which I guess makes sense considering his background drumming for Fleet Foxes.
Maybe I just long for an existence where Sam Beam didn't decide to go all weird and esoteric on us. Perhaps there might be a better comparison for some people, but that's the one that sticks out to me.
if you like good songwriting you will probably like Kacey Musgraves. #seriously.
I think that I'd compare her to a cross between Miranda Lambert and Kathleen Edwards. I'm really psyched for this set:
she actually wrote Miranda Lambert's current "hide your crazy and start acting like a lady" song. and Band Perry's better dig two. she's pretty awesome.

I'm just curious as to what made you compare Mumford & Sons to The Avett Brothers. When you listen to Mumford you think Avett?

I was thinking the same... I don't think they are really similar, but I do like them both.

When I saw Mumford the first time on the farm back in '11, they were a relative unknown to me but the thing that struck me was how they followed the Avett model of using the kick drums instead of an actual drummer. The other similarity that grabbed me is that both of those bands f*cking killed it in their live shows. They bring such infectious energy to their shows that you can't help but be drawn in.
In terms of their sound they both come with similar instrumentations, give or take a cello here and there, and both of them have the same bread and butter: Those rocking folk anthems and crooning ballads. Most of the time they focus on the same subject material for their lyrics as well, just one example is songs like The Cave or Hopeless Wanderer and Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise both preach the same messages of self reflection and improvement. Not to mention album names like Babel and The Once and Future Carpenter obviously share biblical allusions.
Not that they are totally alike either. The ambiguous "They" call the Avetts folk punk and Mumford folk pop for a reason. But I'd say they're similar enough to draw that comparison. To each their own though!
