SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How long does it take? A: We recommend you start on THURSDAY as early as possible before the fest kicks into high gear. To do an awesome job, you need 3-4 hours per day. Here's the thing: come at your leisure! Come between shows - it doesn't have to be 3-4 hours all at once. SOME steps do take a while, some don't.
Q: Which steps take a while? A: There are a couple of steps that require you to wait for your drum to dry (staining/lacquering/gluing). Make sure you have a time strategy in place so you don't show up and expect to work 4 hours and then realize your drum has to sit to dry for 8 hours.
Q: OK - it takes a while... But I REALLY want to do this! What's the IDEAL DRUM-BUILDING SCHEDULE? A: Good Question, my friend! I recommend the following schedule:
Session 1: Sanding & decorating (woodburning/painting/staining) - Leave overnight to dry. Do this early because it will take a while. Session 2 - Lacquer your shell. Leave to dry in the shade. Knot your rings. Glue shell with rings on. Session 3: Stretch your head (goat). Leave it to soak. Cut your rope. Session 4: Put your head on the drum - string it up! PULL & TIGHTEN! <--- The hardest part.
Q: Can you mail me my drum if I don't finish? A: In the past if you didn't have time to finish your drum, we would mail it to you. We can no longer do that, as it creates hordes of problems. Your drum is your ROO art. Start it at ROO and finish it at ROO.
Q: Okay - so is it REALLY hard work or can anyone do this? A: Anyone can do this. I promise. You need to make a time commitment - that's all.
Q: How much does all this cost? A: This year we will have 6 different choices for you. They are as follows:
Large Hardwood djembes $135 Small Hardwood djembes $110 Small Bass wood djembes $90

In '10, I think I started on Friday, and I didn't do anything fancy other than sand, stain and varnish (no wood burning designs or tie-dyed goat skin). It was at least an hour or two each day, and I didn't finish until Sunday afternoon.

This appears to be the same "Build a drum" tent that board members had problems with in the past. Some people being told that their custom drum they paid good money for would be finished and sent to them after the festival ran into some issues: www.inforoo.com/thread/29589/help-build-drum-tent
Just want to make sure people are getting a good deal. Make sure to finish your drum at the festival Inforoosters. Others have had their custom drums lost after letting the maker take it home with them to finish.
Hoo I wish. Maybe next year, I'll have to start saving up
Catman! Stop by and say hello! We get people saying this ALL the time, so we're gonna have some PRE-ORDER sheets ready for next year's festival and it will be available through our Facebook page (above) as well! We're going to set it up like a payment plan or layaway system, where folks who KNOW they want to build one next year can make small payments throughout the year and have it paid for by the time 'ROO 14' begins!

HEY IMAROB!!! Thanks for posting! You can half-ass your way through the drum-building process in 2 hours a day IF you time the steps correctly! We recommend planning on 3-4 hours a day throughout the festival. Come start as early as possible! This process is like birthing a child! The product is AMAZING and ENTIRELY DONE BY YOU! :0)

IOWA: Stop by with your drum and we'll tighten it for you if it needs it! :0)
Yep he's right! It takes 3-4 hours a day... come early! An hour a day isn't enough...

Thanks, Monkeys!!!
In the past we've had issues because we had WAY too many people getting trashed and leaving us unfinished drums for us to mail to them... this year that isn't happening. Folks: FINISH YOUR DRUMS and you wont have any problems! Start early!
(The problems above were because our owner takes all the drums home and finishes them himself --- and when 60-70 people decide to leave them for us to finish and mail to them, it takes a while. We never once promised they'd be mailed immediately & the folks in that thread know that.... THAT SAID... we DO take responsibility for taking on more than we could handle in the past. Which is why this year we are NOT allowing folks to leave unfinished drums with us. You start it... you finish it!)

Cool, thanks for clarifying. Just wanted to bring this up again so people don't have to worry about not getting theirs. If you make a drum at Roo....just make sure you finish it
ALSO: For folks who have made drums with us for the past several years... bring them by the tent and we'll tighten them up for you if they need it! :0)
My Tips for everyone wanting to make a drum:
Start THE earliest you possibly can. This is a workshop that we usually do for 8-10 hours straight on a 2-day weekend with folks.. it WILL take you 3-4 hours per day. One hour a day isn't enough. We always tell you that when you hand us your money and some folks still think they can rush through it...
I've easily built 100 of these from start to finish, and helped at least 2-3000 people build their own throughout the years... trust me: 3 hours per day.
It depends on the drum you want to make. Our kids ashiko's start at around $40, and the small djembes start @$90. They go up from there depending on the size and type of wood you choose. We'll have 3-4 options for that. I think the average joe spends between $90-150.
This looks pretty cool. I visited your website, and some of those drums are spectacular ... and expensive. Pretty sure the drum would be allowed to go home, but I may get locked out if I build a really nice one.
You have definitely given me something to think about!

Roro when we aren't at Bonnaroo we are traveling around the country doing workshops with tons more drum sizes and options than we offer at ROO...(where we just do the basics for the sake of time and pragmatics). Some of the larger drums DO get pricey, but we are excitedly and consistently told that our prices ROCK, and when you consider the amount of time and energy that goes into each individual piece, you realize you're basically getting a steal! The most expensive option we will offer at ROO this year will be $150...which is still much less than a REMO synthetic djembe of the same size, and you don't get to put your own blood, sweat, and tears into it! It is SO 100% worth it to build one! They become a part of you...
Feel free to email or facebook me if you've got any questions... stop by the drum tent and say hello! We're closest to THIS TENT!

Thanks for the reply. That certainly helps with budgeting. Are you going to be prepared to take credit/debit cards? (this is my first 'Roo, so this may be a stupid question)

I like this idea, but was amazed to see that it would cost that much for something I have to spend 10 hours making. I'm sure it's worth it.....I just don't know much about these things and was surprised to see the cost. Are all workshops this expensive? Can someone please post a pic of one they made along with the price they paid? Thanks

Fingers crossed! We used SquareUp last year to take credit cards and it worked great. Hoping there's no glitches again this year.

Sippin - the cost barely (i really mean it) covers our vendor spot & 8 employee almost-volunteer helpers for 6 days, never mind the actual cost of the drum supplies (hordes of wood, machinery, decorating supplies, goat skins, & rope to name a few).. By the time you start working on them we've already put 2-3 hours each into the labor for each one. We do this every year because we LOVE to share this experience with people. These aren't just "make a commemorative craft at a festival" drums --- I use them professionally, and we sell the same drums to you guys that we do to professional djembefolas (players) throughout the states. They are top quality instruments. You can't buy a made-in-china "First Act" brand instrument at Walmart for less than $100... plus think of it this way: would something mean more to you if you went through the entire process of building it, or if you just handed over some money for a finished product?
You're creating a work of art that will help you create sonic art for the duration of your lifetime if you take care of it. I'd say that's worth the investment.. but that's just me. :0)
hehe interesting question ya got there. We open when the first people show up Thursday morning and we close on Sunday night when the state cops on horses tell us to as Centeroo closes down. Honestly though -- we sleep in the vendor tent and people usually show up as we're getting bright-eyed and bushy-tailed just after sunrise. We close up shop usually around 12-1 a.m., but we've been known to let people work through the night. We generally just let people come and work on their drums whenever they want... who are we to dictate their ROOdule? (that's my really bad attempt at mixing the word schedule with ritual and Bonnaroo)...

Oh, I wish! the jerkhole security people confiscated my drum while getting in at Coachella 2012. I'm still so pissed off at those dicks for that. Looks like I'll be making another drum this year!
IOWA! That really blows... find me when you get to the fest. We have a limited number of half-finished drums available (all you need to do is decorate). I'll put your name on the one of your choice. Why did coachella not allow drums in?
