I think El-P is a better lyricist than Kanye over the course of their careers. He was a weird one for you to pick on. Some of the late 80s rappers would have been a way easier case to make... or Snoop Dogg or Q-Tip. I mean El P is a better lyricist than Killer Mike.
What's your favorite El-P verse?
Good question actually. Probably going to be something from Funcrusher or Fantastic Damage. Im in the mood to sort this out then post a top 50 of my own after.
I will give you that he hasn't been as mind blowing during this RTJ run.
I can see someone thinking most of those dudes are better than Kanye, but I don't. Main exception is El-P. You really think El-P is a better lyricist than Kanye? That's nuts to me.

He gets probably 2-3 amazing verses in per RTJ album I think but obviously gravitates towards the "character" he's playing on those albums way more, which is still fun but not the level of he used to put out.
Who has written for Kanye? I somehow completely missed that he uses ghostwriters
30 Hours is basically a Drake song and Violent Crimes wasn't written by Kanye at all. But I think a lot of us assume he wrote most of his lyrics from College Dropout-Graduation.

Its tough to pick 1 verse for him because Im tempted to go with something all crazy and complex.
Crab Mech for now Im going to say from Last Good Sleep from Funcrusher Plus (3rd verse on that song). Its a bit more simple than some of his other standouts. Feel guilty like Im not nailing this answer because I havent done this before and Ive actually done it for a weirdly long list of rappers lol.

Agree, that's why I ended up saying 3 lol. Complex El verses are great but I'm always a sucker for a "fuck y'all trying to bring people down" El too. Squeegee man I love the nostalgia he invokes - nothing too fancy but it just hits, especially the end about his Dad passing his music habits down.
I think J Cole is good at rapping and has a batch of pretty good songs. But he's also insufferable and is basically the walking version of the Rick and Morty meme

Also Common is great. When I saw him earlier this month he spit a five-minute freestyle, completely off the top just rapping about people he saw in the crowd and whatnot. Didn't miss a beat.

Common is fine. I just see him in a similar vein as J Cole of being performatively woke and it's a turn-off for me.
Yeah I can see that, though I only feel that way about J. Cole. I think Common was pretty authentic up until and through "Be" but afterwards started becoming more contrived. It could also be that once you've seen success and are at the level where you're performing mostly for fun at this point and most of your energy goes towards giving back to the community and whatnot, that's what your songs are gonna be about, which make them less interesting and less relatable. And in general I think younger rappers are just hungrier and it translates.

It's probably not that fair of me to look at those dudes that way because I don't really have any reason to think they're disingenuous. Although, Common doing that Microsoft AI commercial was cringe to me.

Common has dropped like 4-5 amazing albums. Not many others can say that. He was an absolute monster as a lyricist comparatively in '94. He should mentioned along with Black Thought, Big Boi, Prodigy... people in that range. Not J. Cole. Where are the J Cole albums that measure up to Resurrection, One Day it'll all make Sense, Like Water For Chocolate, and Be? I've said this before, but I don't think that dropping a couple meh albums when you are out of your prime changes the greatness of that rappers prime. Adrian Peterson's 2019 season will never change the way I remember him due to what he already did from 07-12.
As far as his wokeness goes, it was just him, De La, Tribe, Talib, Mos, etc... paving the way for what Kanye would take to new levels later on with the whole conscious rap stuff. At least on most of his albums. I haven't really listened to the most recent 1-2 which I could imagine are more annoying in today's social climate.
Just went on a Common tear today. He is pretty comfortably in my top ten. 5 albums that I really enjoy.
Couple of hot takes:
Be Intro is a top 15 Kanye beat
6th Sense is a top 10 preemo beat
Retrospect for Life > If I ruled the World
Just found this from last year lol. I'm quite randomly a big Common fan so please excuse me being all defensive. For a while, Resurrection was actually my favorite hip-hop album.
I don't really think of Ye as a socially conscious rapper. Not anymore, for sure. There were some glimpses here and there, but in a lot of ways I would describe it as he was self-aware about his own ignorance and flaws, moreso than being all that socially conscious.

There is definitely a difference. I think those guys cracked the door open for him by assisting in making it acceptable to not just be talking gangster street shit or money / hoes all the time.

We agree on that. I don't think he fits in with those guys. Except making beats.
