Amazon tells me my Chromecast has shipped. As soon as it gets here I'm going to test-drive it and see if it comes as advertised, and if it does, I'm going to cancel my cable and add Hulu Plus to my Netflix subscription.
Anyone done this through Chromecast, Roku, AppleTV, or whatever?
Anyone gotten hands-on time with a Chromecast yet?
I'd be curious to hear your thoughts/experiences/etc.
I'm curious to hear/read about Chromecast now. My bf cancelled cable tv recently too to replace with Roku and Amazon Prime. Possibly even Netflix if we find it necessary...and all that's still much cheaper than paying for cable

Netflix is awesome. And yeah, Comcast is charging us $70 a month for its shitty cable. It's looking to me like cable TV is going the way of landline phones. And frankly, good riddance. Streaming a la carte service makes a whole lot more sense.
It's official: after a few days of testing Chromecast I've just cut the cable. Our Comcast bill is dropping from $153.98 a month for cable and internet to roughly $60 for internet only. I added Hulu Plus to our current Netflix service, for a net monthly Comcast bill reduction of about $80.
$960 a year in savings...not bad for a $35 dongle. Comcast is apparently hearing this a lot.
1) This is going to kill off our upstairs TV, which is pre-HDMI. Upstairs TV is now either iPad-based, or I'll pick up a bedroom-sized HD set.
2) We're going to have to pick a source for live sports. We may go with MLB.tv; haven't decided yet because MLB's blackout rules are so stupid--which means I may just go ahead and pirate the signal, because screw blackout rules.
Haven't had cable for over a year + just netflix/hulu. Best decision ever made.
Comcast sucks so bad. As google and amazon roll out their services comcasts' ability to abuse its monopolistic business with horrendous customer service will fall to the wayside. Has anyone ever said, "Man I LOVE comcast??"
Live spots is the only thing that sucks when missed. I got NFL logins to stream tho from a buddy. Depending on your sport there are streaming packages.

It's funny you should say that. I think we're well into the beginning of the end for cable TV, much like we saw with landlines. So I'm sitting here trying to decide whether and how big to throw on a short position or at the very least some LEAPS puts in Comcast.

I have been doing the same. I shorted RIM a.k.a. blackberry for last 2 years as smartphones took traction. This is one of the easier trades to see on the horizon. We can also add Apple into the list of players coming in to rock out cable over time. Google, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Hulu..... Good luck comcast. It is like the digital camera all over again and they are just ignoring the impending doom of Polaroid film.

Sweet short, dude. There's definitely a "cable doom" spread to be put on. Currently long AAPL and AMZN.

OMG, you are so right about the MLB blackouts. Last time I looked it was something like you can't watch any games on the weekend. Is it still like that?
We haven't cut completely because it's actually cheaper for us to get internet if we still have cable so we did cut to "Broadcast basic". It now costs $12 bucks a month but saves us on our internet. We have a roku and netflix. Also, for anyone using a roku, they've just added your amazon music cloud to it as well.

There's some crazy rule about ESPN (I think) having pre-emptive rights to Sunday games. Don't quote me on that. I'm not fundamentally a "dishonest" person, but again, it's anti-fan crap like the blackout rules that help me rationalize certain exceptions.
If I knew how to pirate a signal I'd probably be with you. Hubby's a great guy and a huge baseball fan. I'm willing to pay but the service really seems to suck.

When I got my HD tv this spring, Abra convinced me to spend the extra $50 for the smart version of the TV. If you have Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime/etc., it's totally worth it.

I thought I didn't miss television. Then DirecTV made me all of these incredible offers I couldn't turn down with football season right around the corner. Now I've discovered the premium channels and things like On Demand. I fear I may end up needing intervention.

We have talked about giving up our DirecTV when we move, and I know it would be a good thing to do, but I'm already thinking of how much I will miss HBO.

As soon as you discontinue the service they will be giving you some really good offers to come back. I've never had any of the premium channels, but I'm getting them free now for three months, they may have hooked me on HBO with stuff like Game of Thrones and Real Time. I'm finding so many docs I've had saved to Netflix for a few years that they never added that I can now watch on Showtime and other On Demand Services. Going to check out Charlie Is My Darling and the panda Riot ones soon.

You think this. Until it is gone and you are like "HOLY SHIZ! My time is spent SO much better." I had DTV for years Comcast for years. Actually all my life even when young HBO, Cinemax, the full works. As soon as it was gone the ONLY thing I miss is football and I can spend like 200$ a month watching football and still come out ahead for the year.
It is just something you don't understand until it is out of your life and it feels like weight lifted.

That was the main reason I signed back up. Free Sunday NFL Ticket! I had paid for it in the past, but it really wasn't worth it for me since my favorite team is on the local channels. I do enjoy browsing all the other games when my team isn't playing though.

Free NFL Ticket +75$ minimum a month DTV x 12 = $900 MINIMUM (most pay more) / 4.5 month season = $200 a month man. You can get waited on, eat food cooked for you, drinks prepared for you and watch the same games. Mind you most pay much more then $75 a month DTV bills.
That is how I think of it tho. Definitely to each their own! But maybe one new way to think of it you haven't considered. Free isn't free when it comes with a bill.

They're charging me $42 a month for the first year with the high def service. I definitely didn't miss having TV the 6 plus months I didn't, just the occasional viewing of Maddow or my local news station. Most other things like the Comedy Central shows, SNL, and such I could check out on Hulu.
So here's the latest chapter in the continuing saga of Comcast cable cancellation. Apologies for the wall of text, but this one's pretty funny, or at least in hindsight.
I show up at Comcast's Chattanooga location to discover twenty-some-odd people queued up at the two windows that are open out of the bank of eight. Every one of these people is angry. Half of them are turning in equipment. The other half are griping about how high their bills are.
Since we all share a common enemy we're all now friends. One guy asks me why I'm canceling. I tell him we got a Chromecast and we're going all-internet. I show him the Chromecast on my iPhone. See? A one-time payment of $35.
He says, "Well why I am I even bothering to pick up a cable box when I can get one of those? I'm just going to go ahead and tell them not to bother setting me up." He then tells me, "You know, I was in and out of the DMV this morning in five minutes. What does it tell you when the DMV is better at customer service than these people?"
Rather a lot, actually. A half-hour later when I finally get up to the window the clerk checks my cable equipment in, and--I wish I was kidding you here--goes "Oops."
"Oops what?" I ask.
"Oops, I just cancelled your internet service too."
Oh, here we go. I stand there with him for ten more minutes, basically bashing my forehead against the thick plate of bulletproof glass that separates us, making sure he understands that he's not ever ever ever ever to do that again, for as long as the mountains shall stand and the sun shall shine. When he finally swears he's turned our service back on, I leave the building, elated. I give it a big Nixon, in fact...both arms up, V-for-victory. The people in line laugh.
And then as I'm driving away I call my wife to verify that our internet service is in fact working, and...of course it's not. She has to call the customer service line to get the problem fixed.
Folks, I don't normally give investment advice, but if I were you I'd be shorting the ever-living bejeezus out of Comcast.

To get me back Comcast would have to offer:
1) A lifetime no-limits anything-goes pass to the Bunny Ranch for me and ten of my closest friends,
2) Alex Rodriguez's head on a spike outside my front door, which is starting to look do-able,
3) Ninety pounds of hundred dollar bills, and
4) A copy of the New York Times dated August 5th, 2023.
Which is all negotiable, of course...I'd settle for eighty pounds of hundreds, but you get the picture.

Ha! We don't have Comcast where I'm at. It sounds pretty bad. I was replying to NBF saying she was considering ditching DirectTV when she moves. I've never had any troubles with that particular company. I was just never really watching more than a couple of hours of television per week, so it seemed pointless to continue the service. Almost immediately they began offering me some good deals to come back through email and snail mail. I was always thinking in the back of my mind I would probably go back once football season got ready to start back up. I went out to watch NBA playoffs and other events on TV while I was without service. I just like being able to come home and relax on a weeknight and watch some college football and, though I didn't really miss them, there are some other programs I realized I really enjoyed. So, I took their deal. Now they have me locked in for 24 months or else I'll suffer some serious early cancellation penalties.
I just learned how to set up a Plex media server so that I can stream videos from my home PC directly to my phone or tablet when I'm out of the house. So cool. It's like my own little netflix that plays the movies/TV shows and other stuff that I have saved.
Plex is the bomb! You know it plays flac files right? So all those wonderful audio downloads from Roos past can be streamed to your media center. My only complaint is that setting it up was extremely confusing and not at all intuitive. They may have improved that by now though.

I knew you could play music but was unaware of the FLAC file ability. That's awesome. Need to make a new channel for my Music downloads.
I think this is damn amazing. I paid $5 for the app but besides that I have the ability to stream from anywhere. This is so awesome. And for times when I may not be near any WiFi I can just load up some videos, comics, and other junk on the internal memory.
Setting it up was so confusing. At first I downloaded the wrong software and couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. Then I got the right software but things still weren't working. I got to a point where I thought I'd need to do "port forwarding" and all other types of network stuff and I had no clue how all that stuff works. Then I read someone suggest turning off your windows firewall and turning it back on. I tried that and it worked, so I have no idea what happened but I'm glad I can stream stuff now.
