I concur with the masses, this list is not definitive without Katy Perry. Her last album had five #1 Hot 100 singles, the only person other than Michael Jackson, and first female ever, to accomplish that. And Roar makes her 7th #1 single and 10th in the top 10. Not to mention a Grammy Nomination for Album of the Year. She's easily top 5.

Katy Perry is sorta like Garth Brooks or Abba or something She's moving huge units now* but at some point we will collectively look back on her as more of a novelty than a star/cultural influence.

I made it to 1:12 before i had to stop it. Those lyrics are so banal and cliche, the music and rhythm so blah and aggressively uninteresting. If I thought she was a talented artist with a talented team trying to write the perfect horrible song I'd regard it as an unrivaled humorous piece of artistic genius. Alas, I think they're "serious".
I really think Adele needs to be in your list, Horn.
She was excluded based on the fact that she doesn't tour. Like, I know the Beatles didn't tour or whatever, but pop star means more than just putting out f*cking killer records. If her and David Bowie announced world tours tomorrow, they'd both make the list (tour plus new album could easily bump Adele to #1).

On Adele, my understanding is that she refuses to do many dates, and even her cancelled 2011 dates were in a bunch of tiny venues that nowhere near suited her popularity.
