I saw fewer shows in 2013 than I had in any year since 2007 or so, and had to miss a few heartbreakers due to lack of $$$ (no Kraftwerk 5-night, 10-album residency at the Opera House? ) - but I'm strangely okay with that, because this year had, hands down, the strongest batting average of any. If I consider all the awesome shows I have lined up from now until the end of March (Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam, Arcade Fire, The National), I really think that will mark the best 12 months of live music of my life.
1. Glen Hansard & The Frames @ Sydney Opera House (Concert Hall), Sydney, 03/26
Great mix of Frames, Swell Season & covers galore. I (sort of) got a birthday serenade, and it closed with a singalong through the foyer, where I was so close I could have run my fingers through Glen's curly Irish locks. One of my new favourite shows of all time. What a birthday present to myself!
2. Television @ Enmore Theatre, Sydney, 10/30
I had been waiting to see this rare bird for well over a decade, and they did not disappoint in the slightest. I was a little apprehensive about no Richard Lloyd... until I heard Jimmy Rip rip it up.
3. Heritage Orchestra performing Joy Division @ Sydney Opera House (Joan Sutherland Theatre), 05/29
I truly, strongly believe that if Ian Curtis were alive today, this would be the direction he would be taking his music. Also, hands down the best light show I have ever seen indoors. I don't think this has come to the US yet, but DO NOT sleep on it when it does.
4. Paul McCartney @ Fenway Park, Boston, 07/09
A quacking Beatle doesn't even crack my top three - that's how much insanely good music I saw this year. His motorcade passed down Comm. Ave pre-show, and Paul and I shared a moment. Chicken burritos were hidden (mine) and panties promptly thrown (not mine... I think).
5. Leonard Cohen @ Sydney Opera House (Concert Hall), Sydney, 12/02
I am in awe that a man who turns 80 this year still has the energy to perform for over three hours (and that's excluding the intermission), and pour his heart and soul into every minute of it. Too.damn.cool.
6. Wilco @ Sydney Opera House (Concert Hall), Sydney, 04/03
Front row, stage right, mere inches from Nels. And they opened with Less Than You Think. I have seen Wilco 10-ish times (2 Solid Sounds makes this iffy), and this was probably the second best of the lot.
7. Americanarama @ Pier A, Hoboken, NJ, 07/26
Slightly cheating to lump these together, but others are doing the same, so I'll follow suit. It took me two and a half hours to drive the 4-5 miles from Chelsea to Hoboken (pro tip: don't try to drive out of Manhattan after 2pm on a Friday), and worth every second stuck in traffic.
8. Jim James @ Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI, 07/27
Inforoo was representing the rail quite strongly at this one, and with good reason. Treat yer ears:

I find it sorta amazing we went to none of the same shows.
Me too. I had Jim James tickets but had to dump them last second when a college friend came to town for just one night. I saw AlunaGeorge, Run The Jewels, Jon Hopkins, Mount Kimbie, Purity Ring, Tame Impala, Madeon (9:30 not U Street), Ghost, and Policia too. I can't think of any other shows I saw, though I could be wrong.

It was great. We went to the stopover in Dixon, IL in 2012 and it was awesome so we had to go back. After seeing Mumford in Dixon I decided any chance I get to see them I will, they're a great live show. Troy was bigger and more organized with more bands. Edward Sharpes set was amazing. We camped next to a father and daughter who my wife and I talked into going to Bonnaroo this year, great people. If there's another GOTR in the future you should definitely go.
Emoney serves more of a purpose than any of you, especially Nate, whose incessant, garbled ramblings are so mindless and pointless that I get depressed just seeing them.
