You're just too young to grasp how stylin' I really was. All the boys wanted to do me when I was 5. Actually the girls did too. My haircut was confusing.
Heck of a game, my fellow mafia. That was fun, but I think I am going to take a break from Mafia for a while (at least as a player - I may ref again).
BTW, can we please add an addendum to the Bacon Rule against personal attacks and general dickishness? Seriously people, it is a game. Knock it the fuck off already. Take a breather, listen to some tunes, go have a Moonpie or something. I know some people take the game seriously, but as Druid & Krissyjo said, there is absolutely no need to be assholes to each other.

I just want to say something about this. viking got onto ody about not posting and accusing ody of making excuses for not posting. VIking was pushing the issue without any personal attacks.
Odysseus, it has been one reason after another why you are not posting. I get that life happens, but you had to know exams plus travel were coming up, and none of it was mentioned prior to roles coming out. Sorry, but just seems a bit shady to me.
I would have loved to see what your thoughts were, but it just seems like you are dodging putting anything in thread again.
Odysseus, you signed up for the game knowing the holidays were coming up. No one else signed you up. All of us have families and friends too, and no one really has harassed you for not playing all that much. But, it took you days to post, and it seems like one excuse after another. All of us have lives too and we take the time to post and play instead of offering every excuse we could.
Seriously, go fuck yourself. I got to it when I could. Sorry it didn't fit your timeframe, but it fit within the timeframe given by the ref.
I've always been under the impression that this is simply a game. However, its a very competitive game and you're ultimately playing a role. When I play mafia nothing is ever personal. At times I've wanted to play aggressive with some posters to help me understand the game more, but I've been hesitant because of the backlash I would probably receive. Sometimes you have to get under peoples skin to help you identify other peoples role.
The fact that ody was mafia and was the first to become aggressive helped him in this game. He made it seem he was the victim and viking was just coming after him when Ody was busy with real life. And ultimately I think thats why some of you didn't vote for Ody and killed me instead. I'm not sure if ody meant to do that but thats brilliant strategy! I have no problem with it.
I guess what I'm saying is that personal attacks are never cool, but as long as it doesn't get carried away (death threats or anything on that level) then I'm ok as long as it doesn't spill over in other threads.

Wasn't planned. Thought it was going lose us the game. I, in fact, really was doing everything I said. I don't care if you're mafia or not, it's infuriating having someone bitch at you for having better things to do. I will never play this again, so at least I'm glad I can go out with a win.

I can't stress enough how strongly I disagree on the "all's fair in love, war, and mafia" comment. It may be a game, but hurling insults and hurtful comments has effects reaching far beyond the game itself. We are (for the most part) on good terms with one another, or at least mature enough adults to remain civil with each other in discussions throughout the rest of the forum. The whole personal attacks really need to go ASAP, so that's why this will be my last game of Mafia until I see some changes in how people treat each other. You're all grown ups here. How about acting like it?
It's one thing to throw around accusations to try to goad people into responding to your allegations - that's half of what this game is about. Telling someone they are stupid or immature, or that they can go fuck themselves goes far beyond that. We are here to play a game and have a bit of fun, but some people take this whole thing far too personally and it spoils the fun for everyone. Checking into Mafia this game became a chore I dreaded instead of a fun game to enjoy.
And frankly, pointing fingers at people because they haven't been checking in as often during the holidays or when they are travelling is kind of a dick move as well.

I can agree with most of that. I'd be totally fine if a new rule was put into the game that said "no personal attacks" or something similar.
As far as the pointing fingers because people haven't checked in. I can see where you're coming from especially during this time of the year. Honestly, if you sign up for the game knowing you'll be unavailable for 'X' amount days then don't sign up. I understand its the holidays but no one is forcing anyone to play the game so its all voluntarily. Also don't get overly defensive if someone calls you out for not being active. Just state the reason and move on. I personally thought that Ody checking in and not voting was suspicious, but I didn't press the issue. Viking however did and then it became a insult contest. I'm honestly not trying to say who was wrong or right because both made personal attacks but, ody started the bad blood then viking reacted. The fact that ody was mafia makes me see this in a different light. In my mind him reacting the way he did portrayed him as the victim, and when it came down to me and him the town voted against me. Even if ody got mad, in the context of this game I can see where Viking was coming from as far as his accusations.
I won't speak anymore on this but I'll say this. I'm totally fine with making a rule saying "no personal attacks" but saying "calling out people for holidays/traveling is a dick move" I can't agree with. No one forced the player to play. If you volunteer to play knowing you'll be busy whether it be for holidays or any other reason then you must face the scrutiny without hurling insults.

I can definitely see where you're coming from (and I agree with most of what you're saying), but I think there are two 7-10 day periods of the year where most people will be busy enough that silence really shouldn't be held against them - those being Bonnaroo week and Christmas Eve through New Year's Day. The other 50 weeks are totally fair game IMO. I don't think treating 2-3 out of 52 weeks of the year as semi-weekends is unreasonable. Simply giving a heads-up like "I will be visiting Uncle Jerry in Florida from the 9th to the 14th so won't be as active then" is perfectly fine and should be taken at face value, as long as the person mentions it before the game starts. Otherwise, it's kicking a dog when he's down.
Sure, absences can be suspicious, but I've never known mafia to predict a period where they'll be called out and make excuses for it beforehand. Viking called out Jimmy when he was travelling overseas; in his case, perhaps he shouldn't have signed up if he knew he was travelling, but he did mention it early on and it's unreasonable to expect him to spend hours of his vacation on a computer. That doesn't necessarily mean I want a rule against it, because that can get tricky - but I think it should be frowned upon and avoided if possible.
BTW, feel free to speak your mind as much or as little as you'd like.
Yeah, I'm already gonna vote for him. The two times I been nice to him, he's been Mafia. Not letting him escape this time.
I don't blame you, it really didn't want to be mafia last game, I'm forgetting how to be a townie. I went back and looked, I have only been a townie and made it to day 2 once in her last 12+ months.
In the middle of ski trips for me, so checking in.
I can never figure out Hakuna, but I am glad I at least got Bacon right. His ask for opinions almost got me to swing back his way, but otherwise he just seemed townie after the first day.
I had Tejas as my 3rd, so I would have been wrong, but Krissy just acts extremely suspicious all the time. Oh well.
As far as insults, Jimmyroo cannot defend himself since he signed off, but I'll take my share of the blame there. The fact that he led the town off a cliff with his behavior aside, I did not even remotely try and keep it civil when insults were coming, so that is on me.
With Odysseus, I did keep it civil until he came after me. Then I just was having a lot of fun waiting for football to come on. Sleepy, if you want the rule change, I am going to put it in there with an addendum that if a mafia member takes the first personal shot to hide, then they are automatically DQed. See if you can see the flaw in that addendum. The problem will always be the people who throw their personal life around as a shield. It happens almost every game. Odysseus was gone far longer than the 7 day period and tried to skate through. And when he gets called out, he flew off a cliff.
The problem remains that it makes the accuser look like the bad guy. The same thing happened a few games back with LLL and Whore found out their terrible news. LLL was hiding behind the issues in the game, I called her on it and it resulted in one of the worst personal exchanges ever in mafia. Far worse than this past game, and I really like LLL, but it took a long stream of PMs after the game to patch it all up.
I have talked it over with several of the veterans and the former commissioner after previous games and the consensus is that it is just too hard to keep personal life and matters out of the game without driving people away. Personally, I am of the opinion that you should post NOTHING personal in the game. Whether you are going away on a trip, taking exams, or hurling insults, none of it is related to the role you are playing in mafia and none of it should be brought into the game. For the 5 fictional days we play, you are your role. But, the enforcement of this would be difficult. Do we DQ a player that posts they will be gone? How about a player posting that another player is going on a trip? And then it gets to the point that it is an even bigger barrier to get people to play.
If there is enough momentum, we can change the rule, but there needs to be a discussion about it. For now, the rules remain the same. Everyone needs to know that anything you bring into the thread can and will be used.
I am out for next game, since I am traveling the rest of the month. GL Town.
I've been "lucky" enough to be involved in both this and the previous game with LLL where things got crazy. It's pretty tough to stay focused on just the game when personal life goes crazy - at least emotionally.
Instead of posting in the thread where your words are always used against you (understandably so, considering the game), could people send messages to the ref stating when they'll be gone or unable to post? Then the ref can make an unbiased statement to the players regarding someone's absence? I don't know if that would be too difficult on the ref or not, but it may help people be able to focus just on game play in their posts instead of explaining absences. I'm sure there are ways that can be abused, so it may not be ideal, but it's a thought.
I do think when people start hurling personal attacks, they should be given a warning or something, then, if they don't stop, further action can be taken. Regardless of mafia or townie, personal attacks shouldn't happen. Keep it about the game.
Also - I seriously have to figure out how to stop being so damn suspicious all the time lol
I've floated the "ref as a filter" thing before, but the feedback has been that it puts A LOT of work on the ref. Think about a ref having to weight 5 requests for clarification and only posting 2 as meaningful. Look at the huge issues they already have to deal with using the like button.
Maybe if the guideline was made clear that only unanticipated events that have caused you to miss time at work and or personal events outside of game will be passed may help, but it is still another level of difficulty for the ref.
Speaking of refs, if you cannot find one for 68, I will do it.
Also, remember, I am not a bad guy in real life. I just play one here in Mafia. In real life I am a normal, rational human being that loves Bonnaroo just as much as all of you, and hates the sniping on the rest of the board.
I would like to add a few points on the topic. Personal attacks are no different here in this game than anywhere else on the board. I have been on both ends of them before in the game and been kicked out of mafia for it before too (well that was part of the reason). What I see most often with this is that the person who feels they are the victim is most often mafia. I have done it quite a few times myself and I saw it in this game with the Ody exchange. In my eyes this didn't progress very far, esp not to the point to remove players from the game, but Ody kept saying he would post his thoughts and update, etc. He never really did though, and got really defensive when he was called out on it.
I remember one of the first time this happened to me - it was summer time, I had a few folks over for a pool weekend and all three mafia were there (me as one of em). The game essentially stopped for those several days and someone (I am thinking Phi and/or LLL for some reason) stated that Mike D had two other players at his house, they had to be mafia together. Yup, they were right. They figured us out for entirely the wrong reason and I reacted very similar to Ody.
I would like to think that those of us that post in the arcade tend to be a nice, civil bunch and the "arguments" here are puppy love compared to what I see elsewhere. A huge part of this game is a debate between players. Many have said that pushing buttons and seeing how they players react is a big part of it too. I don't personally see a need to add another rule for playing nice. We do have board guidelines for general conduct and so forth and if you feel you are being attacked beyond the game, it should be up to you to address it in the proper manner.
I was going to sit this one out, but come on..the other place I play Mafia is horrible, not even worth reading along with. Let's do this!
Screw it. I'm in too. 2 things though. 1. After last game I guess we're getting it out there early. If we dont start for a couple days, plus the assumed lineup drop day off or two, I'm going to be limited from about March 1-9, ill be around enough to check in adn play, but have a friend visiting for spring break and im not going to be on the computer like i normally would. 2. If i'm mafia this game, i'm just coming out and saying it lol, I dont think i can handle a 4th game in a row. And if anyone comes after me day 1, chances are they are mafia.
