While Nine Inch Nails, Jay-Z and Kanye West, and Fleetwood Mac would be my idea headliners for next year... I wouldn't complain with Eric. If not, he'd be a great addition to the lineup.

I've seen Eric Clapton before, he's a damn good musician. He doesn't put on a headliner show though, just goes on stage and does his thing. I'd like to see him pre-headline or something.
He's one of my favorite musicians. Haven't had a chance to see him live so I cannot speak from experience but if he were headlining I'd be ok with it. If petty can headline so can Clapton. I'd love to see either him or sir Elton on the farm this year.
He's playing in Singapore (seriously? A Clapton show in a place that doesn't even let you chew gum or spit?) but can't venture a wee bit southward? Bah. And the Dubai date right after leaves no room for another leg. Although given what he could potentially charge, maybe it's for the best.
I won't deny the schlockiness, but I've seen a lot of great shows by schlocky artists. I do think if Clapton ever comes, it would be in more of a Stevie Wonder situation - sort of a headliner, but sort of not.

If he comes to Roo, he'll almost definitely be a headliner. I'm not agreeing that he should be but he is bigger than a Stevie Wonder. He's sort of a poor mans Macca of sorts. Personally I'd like to see him on a much smaller stage but I just think he's too big, we'll see I guess. Imagine him playing "Layla" on the same stage, a year after Macca played "something" on a ukulele, that would be almost eerie. I'd might even be sober for that shit.

Oh, he's absolutely a headliner. I wasn't comparing him in size to Stevie so much as musing about the likelihood of a double-header situation, but maybe that's just wishful thinking.
I could get down with some Clapton at Roo. Haters gon' hate.

I've seen Clapton live and I think he'd be a great sunday headliner. He has a great list of songs to choose from and he can still rip it. I know there are some haters out there but I feel like Clapton would blow Petty's show out of the water, that's for sure
As previous poster said, there is no doubt he'd be a headliner. Pretty shocked that people don't think he deserves/fits the bill should he make an appearance. If Petty is a headliner, Clapton has to be.
Not only would Clapton headline, he'd be one of the biggest headliners ever. Probably edging out Bruce, and second only to Paul. I'm kind of sorry I phrased that the way I did - all I meant was that I could see him followed by a very high profile late-night, a la Bruce > NIN, or Stevie > Jay-Z.

Well now can't agree with this. Clapton is a "throw him on Sunday so people can start leaving early" headliner. Whoever compared him to Petty got it about right.
A buddy of mine told me a couple months ago that he saw an interview of Clapton somewhere, in which he said that he wanted to play Bonnaroo. Anybody know anything about this?
Haha hahaha Clapton= Petty? No way, not in any universe, especially this one. They are both classic rock/blues royalty in their own right. But Clapton is head and shoulders above Petty when it comes to talent. Clapton is a blues guitar legend.

Can you give me what you think is a realistic top line where Clapton is anything but the #1 act? 2010 is the only Bonnaroo in recent years with the top act on Sunday, and that year just had some weird billing in general.
Only lines if comparison I see is that both Clapton and Petty don't put on high energy shows. Neither rely on the use of Lazers or gimmicks to entertain. But that's about where it ends.
While I do agree age and ethnicity have nothing to do with it, Clapton is a legit legend. Imo. Way above any comparison to Petty.
BB King is a legit legend as well, so is Phil Lesh, etc. Petty and Clapton play the same type of venues (amphitheaters, casinos, small arenas) and at least when I've seen Clapton at an arena he wasn't close to selling out. He's probably a headliner, but under no circumstances would he be #1 on the bill.

Eric Clapton is not bigger than Bruce, in album sales or drawing power. Bruce sells out stadiums, while Clapton plays arenas (you could buy tickets day of show the last couple times he was in Chicago). I think Clapton probably would headline, but he's not a number 1 (at least not at Bonnaroo). There is a long list of headliners that would be billed above him (Macca, Bruce, Prince, U2, Eminem, etc...). I'm not doubting his skill, and he's certainly a legend, but a Sunday closer at best.

This has turned into a redundant argument. Personally I really enjoy Clapton and would love to get to see him on the Farm. He would be playing to a bigger crowd than he generally plays to and it would be fun for everyone. I heard Layla yesterday and was thinking about how cool it would be if he ever came to Bonnaroo...kinda funny I get on here this morning and there is a post about it.

I do agree that he fits the Sunday Closer bill pretty good. Although I wish he would be earlier in the weekend...I have a long drive home and have to work on Tuesday every year, so the past 2 years I've had to head home at Midnight after the closer(Phish, Petty) Ended.

All good points. If the debate is where he will appear on the bill, I would guess in the top 3. But, as with any artist, I do not really care. I would love to see him and my feelings would not be hurt in any measurable way in reference to where he appears on a lineup. As long as I get to see him perform. I think his musical career/chops on the guitar outweigh any living guitarist. Again...I am sure that is a highly debatable opinion. But that is mine.
