So I think a combination of a recently released album, an open schedule during Roo, along with Coachella booking them make MGMT likely this year, very excited myself, how does everyone else feel about this?

I've heard mixed things about them live but I have always enjoyed their studio stuff. I agree that it seems likely. I would really like to hear congratulations live.

I'll have to dig into their stuff again. After a few lackluster shows I kinda stopped listening regularly to them. Haven't heard the new stuff yet besides a few performances on late night shows.
Mgmt has the problem that their 3 popular songs are nothing like the rest of their music, so you get a crowd that has no idea, and ends up hating them when they don't play kids - the crowd has a big impact on a show, so even though I think mgmt puts on a good show for their true fans, when you're standing next to someone who has tuned out and is texting their friend, it makes it harder to enjoy. Most bad reviews of mgmt are from people that aren't familiar with the majority of their music - Now, I have seen them, and I don't like the "rest" of their music - I recognize that the music is difficult and technical to play and I recognize the talent it takes to play that tightly with a crowd that doesn't appreciate you. My problem is that they continue to take gigs that put them in this position. They seem to get sub-headlining spots when they should be an early day, small stage act. I implore you - listen to the rest if their music before you go see them.
seen em five times and the show they did at barclays in brooklyn was incredible. I feel like early on their popularity surpassed their ability to perform live and they were thrown into big sets with big stages they couldn't hold down. that is far from the case now.

It would be great if these guys have learned how to play live. The 3 times I saw them - Roo, Lolla and Toronto were all so bad I left. If the record company didn't force a legit guitarist to accompany them on tour, I'm sure they would have been booed off stage. Fingers crossed they've reached some sort of 10 000 hours/Malcolm Gladwell shit.

nailed it.
i saw them in 2010 (i think) with tame impala opening. had never heard of TI before and now they are my favorite band...amazing concert. but back to MGMT, the one time i saw them they kicked ass. good light show with the music. the crowd is always so young though, which is what they get because of their "big 3" hits. I think Congratulations is a better album than OS, and i was really down on their third album after a listen, but i listened to it again today for the first time since it was leaked before the official release, and i like it more than i remember. 90% of casual music fans will hate it though. if you like congratulations theres a good chance you will appreciate their eponymous 2013 release. if you are there for electric feel...you will hate it.
Saw them at firefly last year and they were god awful.
agreed.lol. and after their set i was leaving and everyone just stood there because they were like MGMT will come back for a second encore because they haven't played Kids. They should know they normally don't play kids anymore lol.

according to setlist.fm you are way off on the whole 'dont normally play kids anymore' thing.
This was the set from November when I saw them in St. Louis. It was really fun. It was a weird setting, a seated opera house. Everyone sat through the first song and then the place exploded on the first notes of "Time To Pretend" and the energy level never went down. They sounded really good too.

You're just too young to grasp how stylin' I really was. All the boys wanted to do me when I was 5. Actually the girls did too. My haircut was confusing.
i'm torn on them live. I saw them in november and it wasn't good. they just stood up there, went from song to song and didn't really seem like they were having a good time. they SOUNDED good and their screen animations were really cool, but the PERFORMANCE aspect wasn't there. that being said, the audience was also very not into it. there was lots of chatter going on and it felt like it was just a live band at a bar.... it felt like everyone involved (band, audience, etc.) no one was into it. i don't know if it was them or the crowd or just an off night or what, but hopefully if they go to roo they will have a better time.

Saw em at the Tabernacle ATL in November and the set blew me away. I had previously seen em at Roo '08 and Lolla '10. Their sound has definitely grown as a whole since those shows. They turned Kids into a surprisingly 12-ish minute jam that went in all kinds of directions. I loved every second of it, as well as the rest of their set. They've also got some really trippy visuals going on behind them which didn't disappoint. Go check em out if they come near you.

I've seen them once every tour and they went from fucking awful to pretty damn good to good but sort of boring over the years. The Congratulations tour was the best for me, but I also really love that album. It was a fun show when I saw them last November, but the crowd was boring and the set list was too reliant on Oracular Spectacular for me.

I don't know, I think they almost have to mix a decent amount of Oracular in there in order to get the crowd energy up. I also feel that Congratulations was a better album though.
