Biography One can trace the origins of Cut Copy to the home of Dan Whitford in Melbourne Australia. It was there that his tinkering with keyboards, samplers, & drum machines led to the release of a single (1981) and an EP (I Thought of Numbers) in 2001. The addition of bandmates Tim Hoey (guitar) & Mitchell Scott (drums) in 2003 helped to round out the sound of Whitford's embryonic vision. Whitford said of the progression "We were all crap on our instruments, but somehow that didn’t matter, it brought a really interesting energy when combined with the programmed synth stuff I’d already written. TEEZ'FM" The trio went on to release two albums, Bright Like Neon Love (2004) & In Ghost Colours (2008), before adding Ben Browning (bass) to the lineup for their two most recent albums, Zonoscope (2011) & Free Your Mind (2013).
On their name 'Why Cut Copy: "I was working at my day job at the graphic design company I owned back in Melbourne in 2001," says vocalist-keyboardist Dan Whitford, "and I remember being on my MacBook. I was in the edit menu and I moved down in the document to the few words that didn't make sense together, and at that particular day and time the words 'cut' and 'copy' really stood out to me. There are no other variables to the story. On a different day, I might have thought Edit Delete was a great name for the band. The other guys were receptive to the name. At the time it felt like a fairly abstract choice but now it feels very tied in with what we do. I imagine most bands feel like that about their name." Previously Rejected Names: "I actually think the name might have been Cut Copy Delete at one point – a slight variation. But when we first started out as Cut Copy, we played a lot of shows and adopted other weird alternative names for some of them. We were embarrassed at our lack of skill performing live so we'd change our name all the time so that our friends wouldn't come see us. One of the names we used was Different Cigarettes. Another one was Red Arrow Down."' SPIN

Physical Reaction/Live Show Striking the perfect balance between indie rock and synth pop, Cut Copy are masters at making lighthearted tunes for people to dance to. Their mix of sound simultaneously beckons both to the past and the future. Although their studio recordings are wonderful, and are sure to brighten any day, they pale in comparison to the energy these gentleman bring to their live shows. Between the catchy songs and their tireless onstage wiggling, you would be hard pressed to find a soul standing still at a Cut Copy show. The true joy of their music is fully realized when the line between band and audience are blurred into one sweating, clapping, and swaying mass with their hands raised in adoration. "Making a record is such an introverted pursuit, so usually by the end of making a record you’re craving some time on the road. And there’s nothing better than having an amazing show to make you feel like people appreciate all the hard work. TEEZ'FM"
Personal Notes Cut Copy is the coolest thing to come out of Australia since koalas were invented. If you are familiar with Cut Copy, you know there has been an Australian shaped hole in the Bonnaroo lineup for many years, and that this star crossed pairing will undoubtedly be one of the best of the weekend. If you're not yet familiar, but are intrigued, do yourself a huge favor and catch this show. Free your mind & prepare to dance your arse off.

I managed to catch them twice this tour, once in Boston and last Saturday in New York. Seriously, do NOT miss them. They're one of the best live bands around, I don't think I've ever seen a crowd lose their shit so quickly once they hit the stage last Saturday. Free Your Mind is also incredibly underrated, as I feel it doesn't fit into what critics consider to be cool at the moment. Tons of great acid house and 90s dance references; 808 State, Primal Scream's Screamadelica, Happy Mondays etc

They haven't played Philly in 3 years. I need to see this band. I'm currently trying to work out a way to sell my mountain jam tix and make roo happen. We shall see.

Let me start this out by saying I'm completely in love with this lineup. Top to bottom. Sideways. In love with this lineup. So many of my favorite artists performing at the same festival, some at the same time. But when the lineup was announced, when their name was called, I knew there was one band I couldn't miss. CUT COPY. IT'S A CAN'T MISS SHOW. I'd love to see James Blake, Lionel Richie, or Zedd, but I can't in my right mind, miss the opportunity to dance my ass off at Cut Copy. DON'T MISS THEM. I apologize for the overuse of my caps. Cut Copy just does that to me. Did I mention it's a can't miss show?
Going to race from Damon to Phosphorescent so I can have a good spot for this show, I anticipate it to be one of my favs from the weekend.
No kiddin - this is one of the bands that really got me excited about Bonnaroo this year! Been waiting to see them a long time.. I'm gonna have to cut out of Phoscphorescent earlier than I want to admit but when ya gotta go - ya gotta go!

Hah I didn't realize its the same stage - that's good because I want to see Phos. That'll chill me out before I freak out to Cut Copy! Glad this thread is getting some attention, I was listening to them in my car earlier and realized, I haven't heard many Inforooers mention this set. I'm incredibly excited.. their discography stays on the iPods..

I plan on getting warmed up at Chromeo, catch a few tunes, then make my way over to Phos to grab a good spot for Cut Copy. Preferably at the very front, so I can shake it with you good people.
