GOAT
History
Goat is one of the oldest bands playing Bonnaroo this year. In fact, they are one of the oldest touring bands in the world. As legend has it, Goat has existed for over 40 years, though the members are always changing. The current version of Goat is only the most recent incarnation of the band.
Hailing from the small village of Korpilombolo in northern Sweden, Goat's roots are entrenched in a history of witch doctor curses and voodoo mystique. Rumor has it that Christian crusaders destroyed their village hundreds of years ago, and the surviving villagers placed a curse on the town as they fled. The presence of the curse has been influencing villagers to play trance-like music for generations. The curse's powers are ever present in Goat's musical style.
Goat's music is a worldly fusion of rhythmic guitar, and ritualistic chanting and percussion. Their driving bass lines and psychedelic guitar riffs produce a funky fusion that guitar and dance-lovers alike will love.
[Great interview with Christian Johansson, one of Goat's three core members]
Sounds like
Fela Kuti X Jimi Hendrix X Talking Heads X Funkadelic acid rock X Tribal freak-out X Psychedelic face melt
Recommended Tracks - Diarabi, Goatman, Goathead, Run To Your Mama
Goat Live
I know it gets said a lot, but Goat really is a must-see live performance. Whether they are opening the What stage (head to the pit), closing a tent, or fucking destroying a late night spot, they will deliver. Easily one of the best live shows I saw in 2013, Goat smacks you in the mouth and leaves you with your tongue out wanting more. Their live jams feature enthralling guitar work that keeps the crowd rockin', and their peaks will bring out your most ridiculous dance moves, as great fusion music should.
Also, the two front women (vocals, percussion) will chant loudly and dance provocatively. If you are up front for this show you better be ready to shake your ass (and watcha self).
I can't wait for this show. They clashed with Swans and Blur at Primavera last year which was headfuck. I went with Swans and don't regret it but I'm very pleased they play Roo this year.

I've been avoiding listening to these guys because I know I'll love them
I never understand why people say this.
Haha, I am confused by it too. Enjoy their music, even if it creates a conflict you'll have something you like listening to. And with regard to who will you see live at roo? MAY THE BEST ARTIST WIN!

Great write-up! Yeah I'm very excited about seeing Goat this year. I've always liked psychedelic music, but I recently have been getting into afrobeat so I REALLY like these guys' diverse sound.
I haven't listened to them yet, but the vociferousness of the people in this topic is making it hard to say no. The only thing keeping me from doing it RIGHT NOW is The War on Drugs in my ears.
