This is my first year, from Missouri and meeting a caravan coming from VA. I'm an uber-planner and I'm wanting to avoid the large crowds and drive the back roads...a little. The "new exit--112" referred to on the official Bonnaroo site isn't on and topos I'm finding (mapquest aerial, google earth). However, by my powers of deduction, ( and a totally awesome little marker from someone atop his car at Bonnaroo on the Google earth site--it also has a wicked-helpful view of the parking/camping combo area, explains a lot to first-timers) New Bushy Branch Road is the mainline into 'roo. My plan is to converge on Cookeville, Tn (TN 111/US-70S) and advise the VA contingent to come the same way you have outlined--down I-81 into Knoxville and over I-40 to Cookeville, area. It's not a huge town, but probably has more than one stoplight. I'm thinking, in a normal non-Bonnaroo week, it takes about an hour and some change to Manchester from there, arriving via TN 55 (McMinnville Hwy) straight down to the proper area. So would the smart thing to do from here be to take a left on Ragsdale Road (I suppose this would dump us into traffic coming off of exit 111 from I-24---which several have said is not the best approach) and turn onto New Bushy Branch Rd road from this direction? OR should we maybe stay on Ragsdale Rd around to the east and get on Shed Road (turn right) down to New Bushy Branch Rd and approach Bonnaroo from the east? Old maps of the site show an entrance/checkpoint/whatever on that side. However, it also appears to be the farthest out parking from Centeroo. Will they keep people coming in that gate out in the BFE lots? Or will they fill in from the front to the back (of the whole grounds). We'll be arriving about 2pm local. Thoughts, anyone?

Exit 112 only exists during Bonnaroo. It's not an actual paved exit with signs or anything, it's a clearing in the trees along the highway between exits 111 and 113 (I believe - the second one may be a higher number) that leads right into the site.
Consensus seems to be that people who enter from the backroads are more likely to be stuck in BFE.
All I can say is, don't plan this part out. Just follow the cars and you'll be okay.
Hi I'm new to this forum, but i live about an hour from where the festival is held, and this year will be my first time hopefully!! If anyone needs info from around the area let me know, I can possibily find out easily for you!!
I thought this was a kind of good tip for anyone looking to rent a car...
i went online to rent a car at the nashville airport and found that alamo offers a small suv (i.e. kia sportage) for the same price as the cheapest economy/compact car. it's not exactly a roomy suv, but considering i was just looking for the smallest cheapest car, it's got to be better for fitting all my camping stuff that i'll be lugging on the plane or buying at walmart, especially with the back seat down. i looked at all the rental companies and nobody else offered anything like that at that price, and they were also about the cheapest in general, so i booked it right away (same price through expedia.com or the alamo website).

So if coming from somewhere only a few hours away, best leave early thursday morning? or late wednesday night? I have to have a "plan" to present to the wife, lol

Arrive Wed Night and you will be camped in BFE (way far out.) Arrive Thursday AM and you stand a decent chance of getting BFE but may luck out and be closer.
I always arrive at about 8am Thursday. It gives you plenty of time to set up and relax and gives you a okay chance of getting a decent spot.
If you live 3 hours away I'd leave about 3am - 4am

Me and 2 of my friends took a Kia Sportage to FL for spring break once. Plenty of room, plus they get great gas mileage. Good find!

i love cruise control...i use it all the time when im driving...and the closer i get, im just gonna follow the traffic in...
Lucky. I wish my shitty car had cruise control. Would've been nice for the drive last year! Luckily we're taking my roomies larger car this year. And he'll probably do most of the driving. Again.
...damn falling asleep at the wheel on those mountain passes...
This is just my opinion but with WS99 and the Virgin Music Festival I saw it happening somewhat...People who write crap on their windows like Bonnaroo or Bust or stuff like that. We saw people from Michigan all the way until upstate NY getting pulled over left and right and some being searched. I know my Colorado plate will look bad enough, I don't need a p0t leaf or crap written on my car to make me look any more like a tourist. Just my 2 cents. Peace.

I'm talking about getting to the GATE before 6-7am Thursday. This will almost guarantee BFE.
I usually get there around 8-9am, which still would lean toward getting BFE, but I like to get set up and relaxed before the heat sets in. I've been very lucky and always have gotten an awesome spot at that time but that is REALLY bucking the odds.
Getting a good spot is a crapshoot but getting to the gate later on Thursday will better your odds. BFE across the bridge (lower right) is usually full by then.

We got there Fri. evening last year and were pretty close, the people next to us had been to every roo and said that was the closest they ever were. So I probably won't try to be there til late Thurs afternoon? Think there will be much missed?
Once you park you are blocked in and can't leave. In VERY rare cases you might luck out and get an end spot but that is HIGHLY unlikely. And there are no guarantees if you leave someone else might grab the empty area before you get back.
Plan on staying for the duration once you arrive. If you must leave and come back, use Day Parking.
Is it possible or how accessible is it to park your car in the camping area and then if you need to leave during the day and come back.
yeah....no possibility...unless ya get an end spot...thats a BIG A IF...we usually always get in line after work on thursday and i am like an hour out so say like 6 or 7. I have always had a decent spot not great but nothing like the BFE'ers 20min walk... tops. Maybe i shouldn't have said that now I will be!
This is my first year and I'm coming from Alabama. I had a group of friends that were supposed to be my caravan but they're all going to Rothbury instead! Does anyone else here have the misfortune of living in AL? I just don't wanna be all by myself, cause I'm horrible with directions...
I wish they would have somekind of special pass for people that carpool we always come with 8 or more people and we need more space for camping ,i always have felt like we are taking up the space from the people next to us no one seems to mind but who wants to have people looking at you like your spacehogs

The 2002 Ford Focus Wagon has worked wonders for me. Plenty of room and a place for you to sleep IF u don't wanna set up a tent (which I usually do anyways) seats 4 easily and you still have room for all your gear.

Saw someone up higher coming from Boston, MA. I went last year, and one piece of advice I would give you is to avoid I-95. Cut through Connecticut and NY, into PA on I-84, then take I-81 its a straight shot through PA, WV, MD, VA into TN. Real easy, no major cities until Knoxville. Its actually only about 40 miles longer according to Google Maps, and you avoid NY, DC, Philly, New Jersey, all that shit.

True, 95 traffic can be insane at rush hour and in the morning, especially through Jersey and between Baltimore and D.C. Hell, it's all pretty bad. I'm taking 81 all the way (coming from Albany, NY).
