You cannot tell me that this lineup isnt quacking amazing. Other than not having a true third headliner this may have been the perfect storm of lineups. A ton of the undercards were at that very special place where they were about to blow up. Unfortunately(or fortunately depending on how you look at Imagine Dragons), Imagine Dragons and The Lumineers canceled (my theory is that they got too big for being billed that low) and took up top spots this year but I mean seriously,, you cannot look at this lineup and say that its a second tier festival. Kendrick is headlining Roo this year for goodness sake and they were the only festival to get Vampire Weekend on their album drop year.
outside of Vampy Weeks, YYYs, Kendrick, Grizzly Bear, Public Enemy, the Walkmen (single best act on the lineup HANDS DOWN), Dan Deacon, Action Bronson, Haim, Chvrches and JC Brooks, the acts on this lineup either a) suck majorly or are b) shadows of who they once were. You cannot tell me in this universe, or any other for that matter, that Firefly is a Tier 1 fest with all of the radio friendly garbage they book
partnering with Goldenvoice is a step in the right direction but this festival needs to do a ton of work before it can even consider itself in the same league as Coachella, Bonnaroo, ACL, or Lolla. the lineups they've put out the past two years have been downright embarassing

First off, that Walkmen show was absolutely killer; so glad I saw them before the hiatus. Secondly though, I disagree. Those bands that you consider a shadow of what they once where have been to the likes of Roo, Coachella, and Lolla in recent years...so it doesn't really make sense to call Firefly a tier 2 fest no matter how you feel of where they stand on their current greatness. I mean even their radio junk like Calvin Harris featured in this lineup headlined Lolla last year. I just don't think its too unreasonable to start seeing Firefly as a tier 1 festival depending on how Goldenvoice has influenced the lineup this year.

For anybody that loves alt-rock and a bit of folk music Firefly has had an extremely strong lineup for a festival a few years old. I could have done without Outkast and Jack Johnson, but the following were all solid pickups:
-Beck -Pretty Lights -Arctic Monkeys -Band of Horses -Big Gigantic -Cage the Elephant puts on a good show -Twenty One Pilots puts on an amazing show -Sleigh Bells -Iron & Wine -City & Colour -The Lumineers -Portugal the Man -Third Eye Blind -Phantagram -Ms Mr -Vance Joy -Kongos -Bronze Radio Return (my personal favorite live show) -Kaiser Chiefs
Yes, Firefly might be on the radio friendly side, but for anyone that follows alt-rock closely they do an incredible job finding acts under the radar. You don't build a festival to 80,000 people in a few years by going with obscure bands no one has heard on the radio.
And after doing a quick count, Bonnaroo's 2014 lineup has around 40 bands that have played at Firefly in the last couple years. Of course a lot of the same bands overlap when it comes to festivals, but I'd say Bonnaroo is the closest festival to Firefly when it comes to bands, with the exception being Bonnaroo's ability to grab top headliners.
you could have done without OutKast? I guess you dont realize how big that was for Firefly even with OutKast whoring out
This. Not only was their set great, but if they didn't get Outkast, it would've been a huge hit on their credibility as a rising festival, seeing as they didn't have any Philly or DC dates last summer.

They were a good addition to the lineup, just not my cup of tea. Don't mistake them not being my first choice as headliners, as not thinking they're incredibly talented. I think Firefly has continued to have a solid mix of artists for such a young festival.
to this point OutKast is the biggest act they got. Foo is close bcuz it was their first fest off hiatus but OutKast hadnt toured in 7+ years. I saw them at Hangot and it blew my mind, i battled for over 2 hours to be as close as possible and since they didnt play Philly and i wanted to see em twice i came really close to going back to Firefly Saturday after being there Friday for Foo's and AM but i didnt think the crowd would be as into their older and classic tracks like we all were down south.

The top three lines on the lineup are pretty dreadful. But ya, this was easily the best year for the fest.
I wouldn't call it dreadful (seeing Foster the People and Calvin Harris so high does make me cringe a bit), but they clearly dropped the ball on booking a 3rd headliner. And since they didn't, they should have let Vampire Weekend close the festival instead of freaking Foster the People. I agree that it was easily their best overall lineup; somewhat weak up top, but a fairly deep undercard. The 2012 lineup was solid considering it was the first year of the festival. Aside from a handful of bookings, last year's lineup was very disappointing and unoriginal. I can't believe they brought Imagine Dragons and The Lumineers back (and billed them so high) after they had to cancel in 2013.

With the Paul McCartney rumors and GV partnership, this fest has recaptured my interest. If they book Sir Paul and a solid undercard, I would consider going to Firefly over Roo this year. As far as the undercard goes, I'm hoping for Belle & Sebastian, The Decemberists, Spoon, Alabama Shakes, and Of Monsters and Men.

One thing I think bodes well for Firefly is that being a younger festival it still has something to prove with their lineup. Being only the fourth year of the festival they know they can't drop the ball. While I'm sure Firefly isn't the only festival to solicit feedback on future lineups after 2014, their polling was pretty extensive and really well done. I think them waiting until February for the announcement speaks volumes on how confident they are in the lineup, considering Gov. Ball will have been released almost a month earlier.

Agreed. Firefly has a golden opportunity to outdo Gov Ball and Roo this year and I fully expect them to do so.

Yeah I've been thinking the same thing about how them posting late means they're really confident with their lineup. And based on the rumors I've heard so far I can see why. Governors Ball, Hangout, and Bonnaroo will all be out by next week and they still haven't even said word of a lineup coming soon. It'll be interesting to see what they have in store.
Must See 2018 List: 1. Drake 2. The Cure 3. David Byrne 4. King Krule 5. Moses Sumney 6. Dua Lipa 7. Mount Kimbie 8. Perfume Genius 9. Yaeji 10. Big Thief

Last year it came out January 14 I think, a day before Governors Ball and a lot before Bonnaroo. To me it just seems like the reason Governors Ball and Coachella put their lineups out so early is because they knew their lineups weren't as strong and would be seen as weaker compared to some of the ones that would be coming out later, so they wanted to get in the tickets before people knew there was a better option. So the fact that Firefly doesn't seem to be worried about any competition between other lineups makes me think that they're pretty confident.

Releasing lineups early has nothing to do with weak lineups those fests are selling tickets either way.

You're right that's very true. But you really think that festivals don't consider at all how the timing of their lineup release works with other festivals? I would think that if two festivals were competing for attendees, and one knew they're lineup was strong or weak, it would impact the timing of their lineup release.

well Coachella always announces first so whose on that lineup doesnt matter plus they sell a ton of tix immediately after the fest ends for the next year

Haha yeah you're right, Coachella sells out in thirty minutes every year no matter who's on the lineup. It's more the other festivals that have to think about competition when releasing their acts.

1. Coachella is in April and they usually have agreements with some artists where they can't announce other festival dates until Coachella does. It's obvious why they release first. 2. Release date absolutely plays a factor in people choosing festivals. If Firefly thought their lineup couldn't draw people away from other festivals, we'd have already seen it. There's a reason why FF dropped their 2014 lineup so early - it was mediocre compared to other fests and they wanted to steal impatient customers who wouldn't wait for other lineups to drop. It's human nature to want instant gratification. Gov Ball is doing this now - impatient festival goers weighing GB and FF are more inclined to buy Gov Ball tix now if they think the lineup is even average as opposed to waiting for FF.

FF Posted on Instagram that the lineup is coming soon and their message board is down. Last year they released the same day as Hangout and the message board/website was down for awhile that day IIRC. Maybe them saying February was a curveball?

It's very possible Firefly was going the 'under promise and over deliver' route when they said February originally. Regardless of how strong they feel the lineup is, February would be a long time to wait with the number of people that travel throughout the country for festivals.

I just got on the board fine, but I'm trying from mobile. If anything, maybe they announce the scavenger hunt date today. I think it'd be smart of them to break their silence in some capacity considering these next 2 days are huge for the 2015 festival circuit.
They just posted 2 hours ago on their FB saying "It's coming soon. Pinky swear." I would be absolutely shocked if it wasn't released before the weeks end. Im banking on Thursday. At the very latest the beginning of next week.

this is from their brand ambassador email that they sent out: Act as a member of the Firefly Street Team to distribute promotional items, such as posters and flyers, in your market. Required for Lineup announcement. Must have availability in late January/early February!
so, i wouldn't bet on the lineup coming out this week.
At this point, either Red Frog has the stupidest marketing team in the industry or they're holding a massive lineup. Neither would surprise me honestly.

Probably a lot of column A (remember 2014's BIG DAY OF ANNOUNCEMENTS!) and hopefully some column B.

They have a tendency to come up with good ideas and then execute them in the worst way possible.

There were a lot of duds with those announcements but of the non-lineup ones, the fact the premiered Bleachers first song ever was pretty awesome, especially in hindsight with how successful Jack has been with the side project.
