Bummed about Babcock not coming to Buffalo, but at least he'll get time off in the spring for a long time in Toronto.
Shanny just cleaned house and hired the best hockey coach in the world, with promises of cleaning up the roster. Babcock will most certainly have a say in who is hired as the GM for the leafs, and with that, the leafs can only get better. They already have a great core of young, extremely talented defencmen, which is always a primary key of any rebuild. Don't be shocked if you see the leafs package a deal to get the 2nd overall pick in the draft. And even if they don't, they're still in decent shape moving forward. I wont say they make the playoffs next year, but i also wouldn't count them out.
In my opinion, there is no package that gets them Jack Eichel from the Sabres, especially not with the Leafs' assets. I also suspect that the Sabres are not too terribly inclined to help make the Leafs' or Babc0ck's lives any easier in the short term.

Don't kid yourself. Jake Gardiner, Morgan Riley, JVR Kessel, Panik, Kadri, & William Nylander would be excellent assets for any team. Thats a lot more to offer than the Sabers currently hold. And believe it or not, Dion Phaneuf is actually a pretty decent hockey player. The leafs ruined him by naming him Captain before he got off the plane from Calgary, before he was ready or had any idea the pressure he was going to be under in a city like Toronto. The leafs are not as bad as they have shown. They just need a culture change in the organization, which is well underway. That, and one of Kessel or Phaneuf need to leave.

I think that they value Eichel a lot more than they would value a half dozen good but older players. Eichel is young and ready to compete. He's marketing gold. They have shown a commitment to building through young talent and I don't see them throwing that away for a heroic run to 8th place this year instead of being cup contenders in the next few years with young talent that they can lock in for the long haul. Getting Eichel (or, theoretically, McDavid) was their raison d'etre for the last two years. I just don't envision them giving up on him to take some good talent and bad contracts from Toronto.

oh for sure, don't get me wrong, I'm not really suggesting that they would or should make any deals with Toronto, but rather it's not impossible, and there would be the possibility of a fair value exchange on both sides,
Is this where we are gonna talk off season stuff? I have a few comments about general draft, New ot, and Bruins talk of course.
that lucic deal looks a lot better now. Especially if the Sharks do as poorly as I think they will. Trading a goalie you'd never use anyway, for a first round pick of a sinking team is pretty smart. In hindsight, trading Hamilton for exactly what they would have received for compensation had Hamilton signed an offer sheet, for picks in this previous draft, opposed to next years, was probably the better move, but regardless of that, nobody they drafted will replace him. I guess making the most of a bad situation is a victory on its own.
Only thi g I can say about the habs so far is they signed Perty for more than he's worth maybe, but it's normal to pay players more to remain in Montreal. More media responsibility and less privacy = more money I guess. Buying out Parenteau was a good move too. More to come from the habs ID imagine.
On Friday, I was pretty unhappy with the Hamilton deal. But now knowing he didn't want to play in Boston, and was asking the Bruins for a higher annual salary compared to other teams - it's probably better off we got what we did.
